From 2021
Luke Pedlar $162,300 MID
SC Average (SANFL U18 2020): 128

The bolter of last year’s draft class, swooped on by the Crows after attracting late interest, Pedlar is a big-bodied midfielder who wins contested ball and has a booming left boot. His draft year was curtailed by injury but he began his SANFL U18 season like a house on fire with scores of 155, 140 and 148 across his first four matches. Pedlar was among those to impress in their intraclub, holding his own against Adelaide’s first-choice midfield group. . However, he was selected in the Crows’ seconds side in both their practice matches against Port Adelaide.

SC verdict: Appears to be a fair way back at this stage but is one who could have an impact from a SuperCoach perspective when given the chance.

2023
Luke Pedlar

Adelaide (Fwd $173,400)
Practice match SC score: 56
SC Ave 2022: 45 (AFL – 1 game)

*Round 1 spot confirmed*

Pedlar, pick 11 in the 2022 national draft, added just one game to his two debut-season matches last year, dropped after an error-ridden, 45-point performance against the Pies in Round 2. But the tough 20-year-old found his groove late in the SANFL season, booting seven goals in the Crows’ final three games, playing a high-half-forward role. A week after tallying 16 disposals, 10 score involvements and 115 SuperCoach points against Port, he finished with three goals, eight tackles and 88 points in the club’s qualifying final win over Norwood. He's hit the track running this summer and Pedlar’s explosiveness and penetrating left-foot could add another layer to Adelaide’s forward-half early in 2023. Monitor closely.

Dan Batten’s verdict: CONSIDER. I still have a few expensive forward rookies ahead, but his job security looks strong. Doesn't look like he will be getting midfield time, though.

The Phantom's verdict: BUY. Had 10 disposals and 56 points in just 55 per cent game-time against the Eagles and he’s likely to be given every opportunity to make his mark this year – Adelaide needs his speed and power.

Does he take kick outs?
Good question, so I did some quick googling. Below is an extract of a SEN article of late May last year, at that stage of the season he had the most GWS kick-ins with an 80% play-on ratio. Whitfield was next with 17. Not sure what end of year stats were; in the pre-season game he and Whitfield shared the kick-in duties and both played on 100%

Really worried for Carlton. Only round 1, but our skills and decision making have not improved at all from last year. We could easily have lost by 30-40 points tonight. Hopefully it’s just early jitters. Also, glad I didn't take Hopper. Looked like they preferred others in the centre bounces after half time, which doesn't bode well.
A fit Walsh in Rd 4/5 will be handy though

No one can make a compelling case to change the rule for the home and away season.
Just a thought. If they had such a rule for Home & Aways wouldn’t teams strategise and include those plays in their training, better setting themselves up for such an eventuality in a Final?

Just in case anyone was doubting, how the Rookie selection problems have pushed us further into sameness, than I can ever remember in Round 1 before.
Number of teams in my Leagues sitting on 278 points: 8, 9, 9, 12, 12, 8, 7, 12, 4 = 81 or 45%.

I really don’t understand the reluctance to do away with a draw and play extra time so you get a result in a professional competition where winning is the objective. Tonight is a case in point where a thrilling game concluded with a very unsatisfactory ending for everybody.

Extra time would have been fantastic and when that change is finally made we will all wonder why it wasn’t made years ago. Easy choice for mine.

They are already training to win games with limited time in their current training, as well as other scenarios. The match simulation between North Melbourne and Richmond had a two minute scenario starting at a centre bounce built into their hitout for the first two quarters.

Simply not the case.

Would it be worthwhile to play extra time only for the first team to score a behind to be declared the "winner" rather than the first goal scored?

Rather than "extra time" I would just continue play. If scores are drawn at end of regular time then no siren until next score.
^This, I think they should just not blow the siren until the next team scores.

If it goes for 30 seconds, you've got a result, if it goes for 10 minutes then it's probably been an epic 10 minutes of intensity you'd rarely see in a non-final.

The problem with thatscenario is, they need to let the players know, the siren should have sounded, but hasn't. They need to know, because knowing you are now playing sudden death means play near goal can change.

Word will get to the players very quickly from the bench. Umpires can tell the players at next stoppage. It will be very short time players are unaware.

Too late. They need to the moment it is sudden death.
The only way I can think can happen is if they use a different siren to signal sudden death, to that signals the end of the game.

I don't mind different siren idea so much but not ideal if it causes players to stop even for a moment and changes the play.

I don’t think you want a team winning after kicking a point.

What about the final siren sounds, 5 minute break, toss to decide which way the team kicks, then next goal wins (but that goal must put your team in front).

For example using tonight’s game in the rare case Richmond kicked 7 points then Carlton kick a goal, they’d be trailing by a point, so would still be next goal wins until you’re in front.

I guess you might have a game go on too long in that scenario especially if conditions were torrential
