I still think that having everyone within 50m of the ball happens way too much which leads to rubbish footy. It seems a little better since the "stand" rule came in (much as I dislike it), but it's still too prevalent.

The 6-6-6 rule might have helped a bit too, when a side gets a quick clearance, but if they can do that for bounces, why not all game? Have it as a max of 12 per half of the ground and a min of 3 in each 50 arc at all times (per side) and you will never have more than 24 around the ball at any point on the ground. Still too congested, but better.

My opinion only of course.
I watched a game from the 90’s recently -Saints and Blues maybe. The space and angles used reminded me why I love(d) footy. It was so good. The game has deteriorated so badly.

Improved fitness/speed of players (everyone has the fitness of a Craig Braddley) has impacted the game and minmised the space available for run and carry.

It was just more attractive and intelligent footy. Fitness has improved in proportion to the deterioration of footy smarts and strategy.
