I've watched most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the GWS-Swans game. Wet, scrappy and the the players have been going at it very hard for a practice game. Swans were really on top for most of the 3rd quarter.

Hopper and Green stood out more to me than Taranto, and that's kinda the problem with that GWS midfield. What does Taranto post shoulder injury offer that Hopper/Green/Coniglio/Kelly don't? I saw Greene up around the midfield a bit too. For me Kelly's the only reliable premium scorer of the bunch.

Mills was definitely playing 100% midfield and looked good doing it. Plenty of tackles and taps to advantage when he wasn't getting the ball.
Campbell definitely takes the game on, not sure yet whether he'll get enough of the ball to justify his price.
Agree regarding Taranto, the main thing I think he offers to them as a mid is a lot of uncontested touches when following the ball across the ground and good tackling at the contest.

Unlike some other players who have scored well when they were young, I really feel like his ceiling is limited by the kind of player he is, sort of like Ollie Wines has always been (but in a different way).

He isn't an inside monster despite looking big, tackles a lot, finds the ball on the outside a lot (covers a lot of distance per game), and kicks the ball a lot with poor efficiency.

There's the issue of where he sits in their midfield pecking order after he fell down it last year and I feel like Cogs/Hopper/Kelly is a better starting inside midfield.

At times I've thought about starting him but I just don't think I can.

That Wines comparison could be spot on. He looked as though he was going to be an SC premium midfielder in the early days, now it’s looking very unlikely that he will ever get there.

Early days still, but could easily be the same for Taranto. Unlikely for a starting spot in my team.

If the rule is once the umpire calls stand , the player on the mark can't move.

If you move it is a 50 metre penalty , seems crystal clear.

If they don't umpire to the rule they get criticised , when they do umpire to the rule they still get criticised.
I feel sorry for the umpires, they do a generally very good job and cop the ire of the fans for what are inherently awful rules.

The problem isn't the umpires getting it right, it's the rule in the first place.

I don't really care for the rule but if you're going to do it, put an exception of being allowed to move around for when the player is taking the shot, you already give them extra time for shooting so just apply those two rules in conjunction. Seems a pretty easy solution to having both the rule without the stupidity of things like that video.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on a brayshaw? Pod?
I like him a lot but there's definitely some risk involved in the pick, especially because he is so unique. Wouldn't surprise me at all if all of McCluggage, Walsh and Brayshaw hit premium levels from that age/price range.

He seems to be there number one in the engine room. Loves to tackle. Maybe worth the risk.

Taranto had a 112 DT season in his third season, Wines never got close to anything like that DT wise ! I think Wines is not that good a comparison. Taranto just needs to improve the 112 DT / 102 SC numbers into something that's close to 1:1.

My biggest concern with Taranto is his disposal- think he went at about 41% efficiency, turned it over so often. Is there any news about if this has improved this preseason?

FWIW, surprised by the Ziebell looking mediocre/average observation from the practice game. He may have been completely useless from a pure game sense, but he did alot of SC friendly things (intercepting/kick-ins/etc). His kicking skills are irrelevant if he continues bombing it 50m + to a contest.

Instead of being disappointed, the game actually brought Ziebell into my team. Looked like a 90-95 sc game to me against St Kilda.

61.9% career DE for Taranto. I think these things can improve with more maturity and development. If he turns 60% into 65-70% he's up there with most midfielders.

No guarantee he does clean up his disposal though, especially in the short-term.

Also, where is he in the GWS midfield pecking order? Kelly is elite. Green will be an absolute gun sooner rather than later. Coniglio and Hopper need to fit in there somewhere too.

I had him in earlier iterations of my team but when I really thought about it, I just can’t see him going past 105 this season which I think is his absolute ceiling. I think you want more than that even as an M8.

It’s not out of the question for him to get there amongst the SC elite one day but would want to see him improve his ball use first.
