GOLD Coast is working through last-minute plans for Wednesday's NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft after ruck target Michael Knoll failed a recent medical screening.

AFL.com.au understands a scan on Knoll's knee revealed damage relating to a PCL injury he sustained while he was listed by Sydney from 2019-2020.

The Suns had been circling the now-Norwood ruckman for several weeks as cover for a decimated ruck department that has lost Jarrod Witts and youngster Matt Conroy to ACL injuries this season.

However, despite reports over the weekend that the Suns would select Knoll, it is now expected they will look elsewhere.

What we already thought was coming has actually happened with Grundy:

COLLINGWOOD ruckman Brodie Grundy will be sidelined for at least the next fortnight with the neck injury that forced him to be subbed out of Saturday's loss to Geelong.

And vice-captain Taylor Adams will join him in rehab, with scans revealing he had suffered a fresh setback in his return from a knee injury against Port Adelaide in round 10.

Grundy was taken to hospital on Saturday after feeling pain in his neck and through his arm following a marking contest against the Cats.

While he was released on Saturday night without any major damage, the dual best and fairest was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in his neck.

Grundy will meet with a specialist on Monday for further examination, however he's already been ruled out of this week's date with Adelaide and the Queen's Birthday clash against Melbourne ahead of the Pies' round 14 bye.

Grundy out at least 2 weeks plus bye, 3 weeks minimum. Ruined my plans to swing fullarton into r3 and turn Flynn into a forward premo. Do we dare go Grundy to Coleman Jones with Gawn r1 + Flynn at r2?

Coleman Jones has the rd 13 bye? Would sort of harpoon those plans? Depends on how many players you have playing rd 13 I guess.

I'm looking at a rental as well, not sure if I'll trade for one this week though, but we'll see. I do have 18 playing this round even with Grundy out.

With only 11 trades not sure I can afford to trade him out and back in again.
May try to hold him and work the byes with him on the pine.
If there was an obvious standout candidate to sideways trade Grundy to would consider, but it's G & G and then daylight really...
Haven't checked out Naitanui's 3 Rd & 5 Rd average then , definitely not daylight.

So what are we all doing? Hold Grundy and use Treacey?

Flick Grundy for good this season?

Bring in a R3 who can be swung around?

If you're playing for a League win you have to hold. Even if overall is your focus, using Coleman-Jones and Reeves through the byes will kill two birds with one stone (cash generation and cover). I'll be holding

There's definitely some value plays, NicNat is basically sideways but can score at the level required to outdo Grundy even when he returns.

Darcy has been really good this year. Both those options are durability train-wrecks though.

ROB probably the value play with the huge score and no Grundy this week, same bye keeps plans in place and the 180k is an entire upgrade elsewhere.

The real question is how long is Grundy out for, neck injury in a team with nothing to play for, seeing a specialist and already confirmed out for at least 2 weeks is the kind of situation that you could definitely take on and come out looking a hero if that injury drifts out to 5 weeks or ends up claiming the season. Thinking of a guy like Cunnington last year who ended up missing the season with his back or a Heppell type where they just shut them down in the end and start priming for the next season.

Hopefully we get a bit more clarity this week!

I think I have to sit Grundy this week, and use Treacey (will hopefully still have 20 players), then bring in Reeves or CCJ when they're on the bubble, possibly as part of a 3 trade move to get 2 upgrades (utilising dual positions where necessary). Preference would be to slingshot Daniher or maybe RCD -> Reeves at Rd 13 and use that cash to upgrade to someone from Geelong or Port....

Have 17 trades left, is it worth going Grundy to Gawn this week and then flipping Flynn to Grundy when and if he comes back?
I love all the discussion on what to do with Grundy and I am strongly in the hold camp, however in the unique situation of not owning Gawn, I probably would pull the trigger on that move. It's a logical opportunity to grab the big man.

His scoring seems to have been knocked down a peg by Jackson's increased ruck duties, but he's still a clear top 2 ruck and no doubt will pump out another monster sooner or later.

Have written this before but relevant now as CCJ is playing, he's a forward who pinch hits in the ruck at AFL level.
Especially if Chol is in the team which he will be for a while as he's clearly in the shop window.
Point being that he will have some rookie scores as all tall rookie forwards do,remember Balta when he got thrown into the ruck. CCJ can clunk it & is a good kick but not as many tricks.

Wonder if Niknat is a trap though.

His hitout to advantage % of 39.2% this season is miles ahead of the rest of his career (eg from 2015-2020 30.7%). It has contributed an additional 10ppg to his average so far this season (extra 2.5 HOA per game).

If he reverts to mean then he potentially goes back to a 100ppg player. Plus Niknat has a horrible injury history prior to 2020 - 55 games missed between 2016-2019.

Nank now confirmed out will help ccjs cause greatly
Will get some centre bounces this week with chol rucking. He debuted vs Essendon, here’s to hoping he can do well again!
