With Houli gone, if I were an opposition coach, then I would plant one of my small defensive forwards next to Short every game. Playing against Richmond, you cannot allow a player like Short to repeatedly get off the chain every week. His run from the back and his ball distribution is too good. Expect one of Carlton’s small forwards to be given this important mission in Round 1…

I think I am going to take the approach to picking a team that @Herbie66 regularly spruiks.

Pick your two rucks (not as easy as it sounds this year). Pick the best available rookies. Then fill the rest of your team as best you can from there. That might mean having a Stephens and Sinn on the midfield bench, but at this stage that looks to be the hand we might be dealt
That's my M9 & 10

In my opinion, Ward played really well today. Was everywhere and gained 29 disposals (including 19 contested possessions). The challenging part is not knowing the impact on his scoring when Titch and Jaeger come back into the team. At this stage, he’s done enough to earn a spot in my team. Question is whether to play him on field or on the bench. The good part is that Hawks have a lot of later games in the earlier part of season, you could always wait and see whether another rookie bags a decent score before he plays.
