So umpires apparently will be more harsh on the holding the ball rule, those strong in the tackle being turned won't have as much leeway now and set to be pinged, along with time wasters.

Maybe overthinking it but guys like Dangerfield and Bont stand out to me as those that seem to like standing tall in a tackle and taking some time for a good clean option.

Has me thinking.

Thinking about not selecting those two or thinking about selecting tackle beasts? Or both.

If the umpires are going to pay more holding the ball free kicks then players like Jack Steele & Touk Miller become even more attractive starting options than before....

Just that I think, Do have Steele and Miller, I'm sure they'll be very popular and even more so now.

Haven't considered Danger and probably won't take Bont either.

Does this mean less stoppages so less hitouts for the ruckman…?
My first impression is that it won't have any effect.

The rule in question is about a player who has prior opportunity to dispose of the ball, who will get less time to do so. Currently, with more time, they have either disposed of it correctly or had a free kick paid against them, and not ended up in a ball up. There will be more free kicks paid in this initial tackle.

Now with players having to dispose of the ball immediately after being tackled it could lead to more hot (no prior opportunity) possessions, which could lead to more stoppages. An unintended consequence.

Love this time of year and we all talk about that mystical $ 150k profit that rookies make.

Just had a look on TooSerious end of seasons stats (profits could rise and fall during the season so possibly not a true reflection) , 32 players last season made the $ 150 K profit of which 15 were rookies.

I guess it is then a case of how quickly they make that profit , then if a viable downgrade option appears at the right time.

Guys like Briggs , Mansell , Reeves etc probably made it to late in the season to be of much benefit for downgrade/upgrade.

Do we expect too much from our rookies and should lower our sites that they all might not make that magical $ 150k profit and perhaps dismiss those in the $ 200-300k starting price category too easily that probably have more chance of making the $ 150k , perhaps have stronger JS and could theoretically score more points than our rookies.

Sometimes you have to take a risk specially in this game. High risk high reward.
Educated risks I agree with but reckless risks I don’t.

You can’t win SC with your starting side but you can certainly lose it by taking risks that you have no real “escape” plan if it doesn’t work out.

Preuss isn’t the clear cut number 1 ruck at the giants - Flynn & Briggs showed plenty last year so his job security isn’t good. Then there is job share factor - last year the giants played 2 rucks often, even if Preuss does play round 1 he may well spend 1/2 the game fwd which hurts his scoring ability.

Then there is his price range issue - if he gets dropped/ injured early in the season (which given his past history, is a real possibility) there are no real fallback options you could confidently back in which means a restructure. You would have to dump a premium from another line to fix the issue which puts you behind the 8ball.

The only bargain priced ruck that I recall which proved to be the right call is Witts when he first arrived at the suns. I recall he was the clear number 1 ruck & spent the vast majority of the game on ball.

Your call/ your team but history says the odds are against you in taking that risk 😉
