Daicos, Sicily, Ryan, Williams, Gibcus Reid (Mullin, Coffield)

Bont, Laird, LDU, Parish, Martin, Mckercher, Sanders, Curtin (Binns, Sharp, Clark)

Gawn, Grundy (Livingstone)

Dusty, Adams, Fyfe, Reid, Duursma, Macrae (Windsor, Darcy)

Martin to be can be a top 6/8 defender this year if he takes over kick outs and is main distributor. 11 keepers, 1 possible (Adams) 2 mid pricers in Williams and Fyfe then rookies. Happy with structure.

A team made by Coaches’ choice
Def: Sicily 39%, Tom Stewart 29%, Young 35%, Williams 60%, Gibcus 48%, Coffield 56%, (Hore 28%, Pink 24%)
Mid: Bontempelli 33%, Daicos* 62%, Butters 32%, Walsh 32%, Miller 24%, McKercher 63%, Sanders 56%, Curtin* 53%, (Sharp 50%, Clark 41%, Mannagh* 56%)
Ruc: Gawn 51%, Grundy 65%, (Maley* 29%)
Fwd: JMacrae* 36%, Flanders* 35%, Fyfe* 35%, Reid* 74%, Duursma* 42%, Watson* 27%, (F Macrae 35%, Wilson* 43%)
Kitty $24,600
Note: In theory E Gulden at 25% should have been in Miller’s place, but it would have put the team $52k over budget

I feel like Duursma and Watson aren’t great picks for their price. Job security should be fine but scoring output probably won’t be great playing predominantly forward.

Lazzaro or Windsor might be ok for the same price barring selection.

Could go down to a Laurie/Sexton and maybe upgrade Steele or Newcombe to an uber.
Rookies are only place holders for structure this far out

I did want English but Grundy creates other options , is Bont the man to have from the start ???? , is the Mids strong enough or do i need to be more creative , Defence is solid and Forwards weakest part of team at present , appreciate any thoughts

So essentially it's English & McCluggage v Bont & Grundy with a few different rookie priced players in each.

Bont & Grundy easily for mine.

Also, McKercher appears to be must-have.

Thanks for your thoughts BB , i had McKercher in originally , so if i did keep Grundy and Bont who would you drop for McKercher only $9500 left with those options , thoughts
I think Grundy has lost a bit of confidence after the Dees , will be interesting to see how he handles the No.1 job again

I think Bont and Grundy looks the better side. The only other thing to consider is the early byes. I know there is debate on the best strategy out there, but I think having 7 keeper priced players with an early bye is giving up too many points early.

Why the early byes this year , we have byes round 12-15 , this is a first yeah and the reason we have 40 trades instead of 30 ???

Why the early byes this year
Eight teams are playing in Rd 0 so they are given an early bye to put them on an even keel with the 10 teams that don't start until Rd 1.
this is a first yeah
Yes and no in Supercoach terms. In 2011 there were byes every week because of the entry of a 17th team (GCS) but there were multi-byes in Rds 4, 5, 6 and 16.
and the reason we have 40 trades instead of 30 ???
Ostensibly.

Tried to take into account the byes for premos. Hard to pass on Gawn and Grundy and I feel like Flanders is worth taking as the forward line is a bit too unknown to spend cash on. Could drop him to Jordan and turn Steele into Naicos. I reckon Harmes/Billings/Jordan are a chance of borderline keeper status in the forward line as well. Fading Naicos scares me a bit but his early bye and a few tough match ups could mean he’s one to look at getting in as an early upgrade at sub $600k. Any and all feedback welcome.

First pass so plenty of chance to change. Rookies placeholders at this point but intraclub reports do help a bit.

Def:
Still not sure starting with Daicos. Has both Sydney and Hawks who tag before his Rd 5 bye. So will keep an eye on others but pretty set on Sicily/Stewart as the other two premos.

Mid:
Avoided the early byes but like both Walsh and Touk as potential starters too. Merrett as well but he always drops in price at some point in the year.
Thought Wardlaw would be in less teams (11%) but I’m very bullish on him. From reports hasn’t missed a beat this pre season, add in the intraclub highlights circulating, plus throw in his games last year he is pretty damn exciting. Gut feeling is he will be given the keys with LDU. At this point barring any setbacks he will be in my starting team.

Rucks: pretty cookie cutter but also like Xerri if I were to entertain some mid price madness.

Fwds: Obviously the line with the most unknowns so happy to start T Green with WCE & NM first two rounds and see how Flanders et al. Look after a couple rounds.
Rankine dominated the intra with more midfield time. Very interested and will keep a close eye.

Pretty out of the loop this year so no doubt a fair way off the mark with my first try. Bont, English and Stewart are very un-me picks at their prices. Might be fighting too hard to avoid rd0 players. Interesting catch-up reading this morning on thoughts about the value of that.

I have this sinking feeling that the game has gone past me - my rankings fall away as the years progress. Partly that may be because of Ben's Beasts rule (new kid = bad SC year) but I also think I haven't adapted property to the changing rules. I have always traded aggressively and chased ceiling and value over security, and I think most people do that now because of the extra trades and so I've lost any edge from that, without gaining anything in return.

Is there a prevailing view on how best to adapt to the extra trades, other than to just keep upping the ante of aggressive trading and finishing team as quickly as possible?

Congrats on the new kid if I haven’t congratulated you already!

No new kids for me in 2022 and 2023…

A bounce back for you this season perhaps?

I think you may be selling yourself short. You have always been good across a range of formats, which to me makes clear that you’re perfectly capable of adapting.

As for how best to do that in 2024, here are some (incomplete) thoughts that I jotted down earlier, with some good discussion across the subsequent pages:

I would be very interested in your thoughts on how best to approach it.

I'm actually liking this team after a million and one versions being considered over the past 5 weeks or so, don't want anyone to rate it but would appreciate any honest feedback about how you feel about it because I value all your opinions.
I consider it a mostly guns and rookies team except for Wardlaw, I'm considering Martin a Gun in this circumstance. :)
