I think for the 400k players i have him behind Day, Oliver and probably on par with Ashcroft... not the worst selection though, specially if he can get back up to 23 season ave.
Good list of names there. Will Ashcroft for me depends on his CBA counts, we get a look as to what those are shaping up as for the season as he has the round 3 bye (and round 16). If we get surety he will be getting first rotation CBA dibs, that's probably the only scenario I would consider him as a starter given that early bye. If he bolts first few rounds can plan to get him round 4 as a correction.

Day has the round 4 bye, but we could also get a look at him as a possible in the first upgrades given the Hawks have Eagles/Tigers rds 7/8 and given he has the round 15 bye (so you get 7 weeks out of him). I'm probably looking at him as an upgrade target before round 7.

Clarry has no early bye and if he looks like he's lost weight, he could be a great start given he has that round 15 bye, too. He and Trac both heavily considered for me as starters.

Hi everyone, I have convinced some of my mates to start SC this year for the first time in a decade and wanted to give them a brief(ish) guide to the game to give them a leg up. If you have the time to read through the below, does any have any input on notable names I missed, tips i'm missing, or anything I have just flat got wrong?
Unfortunately I can't upload the below as a word doc so I'm sorry for the lengthy string of pictures.

Pretty solid summary. My only comments as follows.
  • I assume Charlie Daniel is actually Caleb Daniel.
  • In the captaincy loophole you need to mention the need to have the E on a bench player (who is playing) to come on for your non playing captain.
  • You could also mention the emergency loophole.

I do have some interest in Shai Bolton this pre-season. He has some big scores under his belt at Optus for SC when he was a Tiger. Obv Freo has the best bye, there is also the lack of genuine forward premos, Shai's DPP, the fact Freo is tossing up genuine SC options yearly. Shai adds something to that midfield in terms of outside play and I reckon that's where they'll play him, but we'll see whether the Freo preseason goes in that direction.

Obviously he is prone to down games but I reckon with that on-ball brigade around him there is a bit of room there for him at his price to present value, especially as a forward.
I think he is the replacement for Walters and fits that role nicely. It probably depends on what is defined as value. He could ave high 90's and that probably places him in F5 or F6 territory. His scoring can be highly volatile as you note and pre season could reveal his role better. The question is, are there other players in the fwd line who could also go in the 90's that are cheaper. B Smith, Pou, Macrae and perhaps Daniel. But I suspect a vast majority of coaches will start 3 or all of those guys so maybe a POD could be useful.

This is a great writeup with lots of insights here, well done.

A few things that I would suggest considering - obviously some less meaningful than others:

- I think you’ve indicated that the mids and the rucks are both the most important line (or similar). For what it’s worth when I read your mids section, I disagreed with that comment - basically because I agree with all your ruck comments about why that line is the more important one 🙂

- Upgrade cadence is an important concept, but not self explanatory. I think it would be worth defining/perhaps providing an example of.

- Subs are not mentioned - I think they are worth flagging, particularly for their impact on cash generation for fringe rookies or those who are considered suitable sub candidates (eg burst players/those with lower endurance).

- I don’t think boosts are defined or explained. I think they are fairly important for a number of reasons - they reduce the importance of the upgrade cadence concept (by easing the key constraint) and they allow coaches to do more of a reset without needing to go one up/one down when used.

- The discussion on the flex is useful. It would be good to define what this is. For what it’s worth it’s probably not as impactful, based on BBL, as was initially thought/speculated.

- The mid season DPP additions may be worth mentioning, as they will be new to your mates. The key implication as I see it is that we receive new players in lower scoring positions (eg FWDs) and so we don’t want to complete those lines too early.

- I don’t hold rookies until their price has maxed out per se, and I think a lot of coaches probably don’t, especially now that we have more trades and so don’t need to be as sparing with them. Personally I try to sell rookies when they are within 25k of where I expect them to get to (usually based on my projected average x 5000), and/or they have a breakeven I don’t want to hold through.

- I definitely agree with the idea of trading aggressively early in the season. Holding six trades seems like a lot to me, especially given that the flex position will significantly reduce the impact of an LTI to a premium. Many coaches also managed to get 23 premiums last year, allowing looping off the bench or cover for injuries if DPP links were in place.

You have packed a lot in - your mates should be able to catch up quickly if they pay attention to what you have written! Of course, they are most welcome to join the site if they want to improve their strategy knowledge or ask for tips as they come back up the curve.

I wont be taking Ashcroft for the reasons of there are way to many mouths to feed in that team, the double bye. He differently is an upgrade target for me if needed.
Day and Oliver are starting in my team and both feel like there at least 20 ppg under valued. Expecting big things from Day, with Hawks in opinion are a top 4 team now. Hope he stays injury free.
With the mountain of more expensive rookies this year my 8 mids will be, Bont
Butters or Serong
Day
Oliver

Parker left out

If we get a playing R3 then a M/F donut could be nice to have with a Lynch on the bench.
Love Bolton as a player, when he is on his unstoppable for fantasy though its hard to pick him. One week you will get a 150 next week you will get a 50. I would rather spend the extra cash and go o JHF to get more consistent scores or down to Parker.
I agree that Bolton is probably 10-15 ppg under valued its just the roller coaster ride that goes with it.
IMO Parker is probably undervalued around the same as Bolton.

While Serong has a wonderful ceiling, I did get caught out using him as a captain option.

He should become a better player in a decent team. We saw him get up to a 96.7 average around a decent team and then the team dropped off.

Only just turned 26 and I think in the fremantle system he will become effective more often without so much chaos ball.

Regardless of the relative merit of the team, his conversion rate has not improved over the years (reluctant to use the drop-punt).

He wont play as much midfield as he did at Richmond, dangerous small fwd who pushes up the field thats what Fremantle lacks that polish, specially after losing shultz to the pies. As i said he will post a couple of big scores followed by 40's and 50's the following week.
His a papley type player explosive.
Not the worst pick but inconsistent scores is what bothers me. If your going for overall ranking or to win your leagues i guess.

With the flex, higher deviation players are less of a problem.
