I had a look at the average number of deliveries that Mir, Steketee and Siddle survive across their T20 careers:

Mir 7
Steketee 7
Siddle 7

Presumably those numbers would be lower when their teams are 6/63. It seems Maxwell knew what he was working with.

Who am I to doubt the great man however my query would be why he needed to do it 7 down. Surely you could see what happens with Mir and employ the exact same tactic with 10 and 11 when required. I also think they missed quite a few 2s doing it.

There is a balancing act to some extent, but one thing that I think has been somewhat overlooked is that in keeping his partners off strike, he was giving himself more of each over to face, which was itself increasing the run rate.

Maxwell facing 5-6 balls an over striking at 170 was contributing more runs per over than putting Mir and co on strike for 4-5 balls an over striking at 130/100/90 (their rounded career strike rates - which are generous given they mostly would have been accumulated in easier batting conditions, and when Siddle wasn’t aged 40!).

Now, if only there was a way for Maxwell to be able to face more deliveries each match, without having to worry about turning down singles because he’s batting with the tail …
