Got a few words that I’d use to describe people trying to talk about things they have no business talking about, but it’ll get me banned. Bbl has actually been a lot better to watch this season.

The surge is a bit of a weird phenomenon but it does make it interesting trying to predict when teams will take it. Does place a bit of pressure on the first 4 overs, but it’s at least not as stale as other T/20 leagues that have the 6 PP overs up front.
I tend to agree. The surge adds an interesting strategic decision into the mix, and often acts as a catalyst to change the momentum in a match - which can make for great viewing. Even simply having to successfully navigate the surge adds a sense of jeopardy to chases that otherwise seem largely under control.

On the surge, someone said to me the other day they’d like to see the batting team have some ability to choose the bowlers they take it against. Picking the bowlers seems unlikely (and impractical) but being able to call the surge after a bowler has been given the ball could be interesting. Fielding team chooses the second over bowler but would give the batting side a chance to maximise their strategy.

I have increasingly noted that teams are more inclined to take their surge immediately after the premier surge bowler has bowled a regular over (Ellis, Abbott, Dorff, Johnson etc) which I guess achieves this aim to some degree. It also seems as though Ellis has responded to this by completely back loading his spells in recent games.

I think more than anything else it's just nice that we have a strategy element that's been in play for five years and there's no consensus on how to use it yet!

Yeah I have noticed that too, I think there was a game where Ellis basically bowled 3 straight at the end because he’d been waiting for the surge. It’s interesting the cat & mouse, they often talk in interviews about the trade off between the surge fielding restrictions vs it bringing back the best bowlers.
