Geeze Smith is an absolute freak. Makes you think how the home series against India would have panned out had he been in the side. What a brilliant innings. England will be extremely disappointed considering they had us 8 down for 122. Well in this match now. Pitch still looks like it’s great to bat on. Hopefully conditions play it’s part and we can get the ball to move around, otherwise we’re ****ed.

Steve Waugh-like ton there from Smithers! Rearguard with tail as well. What a comeback in tough conditions!
I was thinking more Border like in 80's. Although English bowling attack nothing like Windies quartet of true express pace merchants.
We would regularly be 4 or 5 down for not much v Windies in 80's, well actually just about every side was, but Border would have this amazing innings where everyone else falls like flies and he just cannot be got out.

Border seemed to do it so many times but not unorthodox like Smith.
Smith must have an incredible eye to bat like he does and score so well, so often.

Don't forget Burns , Roy , Denly not exactly a feared threesome.

Could come down to who makes more runs between Smith & Root.

Don't think Buttler , Stokes , Bairstow , Ali batting record against us is anything too special over the years.
curiosity got the better of me

according to HowStat

v Australia

Root 20 Tests, 1369 Runs @ 42.78..... 3 x 100 , 9 x 50
Buttler 6 Tests, 122 Runs @ 15.25
Stokes 10 Tests, 480 Runs @ 30.00..... 1 x 100, 2 x 50
Bairstow 15 Tests, 676 Runs @ 28.17..... 1 x 100 , 2 x 50
Moeen Ali 11 Tests, 472 Runs @ 27.76,.... 2 x 50
Woakes 6 Tests, 156 Runs @ 19.50

Obviously Root is the key, get him early and hope the rest follow historic performances

massive night , < 250 would be very nice

Umpires shocking performance yesterday is really making them hesitant to give anything today. Could be very costly for us.

Didn’t watch too much last night, but early in the morning session it looked like we were bowling too short. Granted the pitch was better today, but not utilising the new ball to great effect is something we’ve struggled with in England the last few series.

Hopefully we turn it around today as England are yet to really hurt us on the scoreboard.

Looks like it ended up being extremely costly, and will have a huge impact on the result of the match. Very disappointing that poor umpiring is overshadowing the cricket that is being played.

Bancroft technique looks terrible. He doesn’t look balanced and is falling to off all the time. His bat never seems to come straight through the ball even when playing straight. I think Harris may be a better option up top.

Set up nicely for tonight. Hopefully the two at the crease can get through the initial 10 overs and build us towards the 100 lead before the end of the first session. Would love to see us bat the majority of the day, but feel like with the way the pitch is beginning to turn a bit more we could see a few wickets fall to Ali today. Wade and Paine will need to contribute minimum 20-30 runs each if we're any chance of winning this test.

Hopefully the rain stays away...unless we lose a few quick wickets in the opening session. Wade to redeem himself and lead us to setting a strong total!

Great first session from the Aussies with Smith proving his class again. Over 100 runs and losing just the one wicket puts them right back in it ... so long as they can bat most of the next two sessions. Maybe a couple of late overs at the English would be an ideal day?
