Think the plan was for Paine to lead them to the WTC Final (if we made it) but now not sure what is happening about that.

Suspect the Bangladesh tour will be postponed , hopefully the Afghanistan Test & India series go ahead.

Do they "trust" Cummins and/or Head as Test captains or if they are not ready give it back to Smith for 2-3 seasons ? Does he want it again ?

Still not 100% convinced Head's spot in the side is totally secure.

Is Labuschagne in the picture ? M Marsh ?

If Khawaja got back in the side is he a option ?

Some interesting points here.

For mine, once someone ticks the “culture” box, the most important thing is that they are a fixture in the side ... we can’t be picking someone as a professional captain in my view.

On that basis all bar Cummins and perhaps Labuschagne (I know he’s a lock now, but he wasn’t even in the side less than a year ago) would be excluded.

I’d love to see Cummins given a go. Seems to be widely respected, as well as liked. I don’t see why a bowler can’t do it.

We are due to tour South Africa in early 2021 , maybe Smith gets a chance again their to see if he can do a better job the second time round ?

Didn't mention Carey either , maybe CA see him as a better option than Cummins or Head ?

next Ashes series is 2021/22 , can Paine last that long ? will be 37 , would they want a "new" captain for the Ashes ?

Good points. You’d have to think Paine doesn’t make it to the 2021-22 Ashes, so I suspect you’re right in that they will probably be working backwards from series/tournaments like that.

Carey seems an obvious heir apparent with the gloves, but it would be brave to pencil him in as replacement skipper as well, given that presumably he and Paine don’t play in the same Test side (with neither being good enough to justify a spot as a specialist batsman as things stand).

Maybe they run with Paine for almost as long as he’s willing/able, and then switch to Cummins if they see him as a long term option, or Smith as a relatively safe pair of hands if they’re unwilling to make a long term commitment on a captain at that point.

Smith is close to 31 and Clarke went through to around 35 (with back issues, and a strong but inferior record to Smith), so Smith could potentially have another decent stint even if it didn’t start near term.

Reading a few articles today about Paine , sounds very much like the job is his for the Indian series , I guess as long as he performs he stays in the team (or doesn't get injured)

Looks like the schedule is :-

Bangladesh (A) - probably cancelled
Afghanistan & India
South Africa (A)
WTC Final (A)
England

I have commented enough in the past about Carey.

Cummins leadership skills is unknown at this stage but I wouldn't mind him as the next in line , just still not 100% sure on Head as a Test batsmen.

Trying to recall if Smith was a decent enough captain tactically or not.

For the bowling line-up, I’d take Cummins, Anderson, Ashwin, Jadeja, Yasir. A bit unconventional, but there’s plenty of batting in there, which will be needed if we’re playing five of them.
Very similar approach to mine.

P Cummins, J Anderson and R Ashwin for three spots and the last 2 would be a combination of either Lyon and Woakes or Sharma and Shah.
