The other way to look at it, is if I'm a paying spectator who only can make day 1 of the test, not sure I get much consolation out of a test finishing 10 hours early when I only get to see 85 overs instead of the 90 I paid for.
More importantly, tv rights and the money it produces funds the whole circus. If tv companies lose even 5% of viewers, due to a poor quality product, which slow over rates can represent, it's a financial disaster for all involved!!!

Fair point.

I guess when a team wins with so much time remaining maybe a adjustment needs to be made (not sure how/what though)

Maybe it's the bowler in me but I feel like the worst kind of Tests are the ones where prising wickets out is near impossible - think that MCG Ashes Test a few years back. Part of Bazball's success has been PR for sure, but to me there's not exactly a risk of England being viewed as a poor team to watch...

Love how the selectors swing the axe, when things aren't going to plan (not!).
How and when will they try new blood?!
Better to break in new players in a home series, than on unfamiliar pitches.
Maybe the first change needs to be the selection panel! 🤬
I think we will have a new selection panel before they make any substantial changes.

Bowlers have carried the side for the last 12 - 18 months.

Media was all in on Warner's poor form (and rightly so) but he was actually performing better than 2-3 of them that are still their 😅

If they have no intention of picking Bancroft (and Harris) again why play them in Australia A matches , at least try someone different at that level.

Be interested to see if they react if Konstas scores well against WA although that would most likely mean (the doomed to fail McSweeney experiment is over before he had a fair go)

Win in Adelaide and everything will be rosey again and out will come "we are picking the 6 best batsmen in the country"

Maybe if the Poms beat us next summer they will say we might have got it wrong

Yeah last summer (Pakistan/WIndies/NZ) was the one where we could have taken a few more risks and blooded a young guy... instead we play Warner then move Smith to opener.

Be interesting to see if the likes of Khawaja and Smith make it to the Ashes next year. They're not getting any younger and they aren't exactly scoring truckloads of runs.

Exactly

Needed the new opener to have had time to (re)establish himself once Khawaja retired then bring in another new one.

Maybe they were hoping Pucovski came good.

Head , Khawaja , Labuschagne , Smith all under the pump not sure we have 4 to bring it at once though.

Surely can't carry them all to the Ashes on recent form.

Tour of Sri Lanka , WTC (if qualify) , tour of West Indies before the Ashes.

Remember reading last year Dixon was the next big thing , don't think he has played for Victoria yet

Bancroft/Harris 😅
Konstas
McSweeney
Green
? too soon for Clayton/Connolly/Davies etc
Webster

Shield cricket about to go into hiatus for the Big Bash so no one playing red ball cricket to put pressure on the incumbents

Said years ago we need Australia A to be playing New Zealand A in red ball cricket over Christmas/New Year.

Not sure too many are banging the door down at Shield level though , current Top 10 run scorers for the season

Cartwright 486
Carey 452
Harris 404
Konstas 383
McDermott 382
Handscomb 376
Hunt 370
Patterson 360 - Test average greater than Bradman , so maybe he is the answer 🤗

just looking back at last season ( v PAK , WI & NZ)

Marsh 500 Runs @ 45.45 , 0 x 100 , 5 x 50
Khawaja 447 Runs @ 34.38 0 x 100 , 2 x 50
Smith 365 Runs @ 33.18 , 0 x 100 , 2 x 50
Carey 336 Runs @ 33.60 , 0 x 100 , 3 x 50
Labuschagne 325 Runs @ 27.08 , 0 x 100 , 4 x 50
Green (injured) 302 Runs @ 50.33 , 1 x 100 . 0 x 50
Warner (retired) 299 Runs @ 49.83 , 1 x 100 , 1 x 50
Head 269 Runs @ 22.42 , 1 x 100 , 0 x 50

I know McDonald & co love referring it as a collective , but some of these boys need early big runs (especially if others are knocking on the door) or questions might (should) be starting to be asked

The bowlers might be papering over some cracks

Labuschagne is averaging 33.65 over the last 2 years (35 Innings) 1 x 100 , 7 x 50
Would not have improved much after the 1st Test

Yeah it's pretty ordinary... Basically an hour behind after 4 hours play
Are they still fining the captain (and players) or just docking points from the WTC ?

Doesn't work if and when Afghanistan , Ireland & Zimbabwe actually play a Test though.

Actually agree with Sir Ben

10 hours of scheduled play still to go when the result was achieved but England (and New Zealand) both get fined for slow over rates.

Fully understand teams need to bowl a certain number of overs in a days play but when you win with that much time to spare surely that should come under consideration
Nah, they’re highly tuned athletes. Used to get through 96 overs in grade cricket within the same amount of time these guys have to get through 90. Under 14-15 overs in an hour is pathetic.

Just Prima Donna rubbish from international cricketers overthinking the game and fields. They do enough analysis before and after games that you would think they could just adjust on the fly instead of the 1+ minute discussions between overs.

To add to that, they play against the same blokes majority of the time, so how much chat is actually required?

The crux of the over rate issue seems to be that the disincentive isn’t large enough.

If the bowlers and the captain missed the next Test for egregious or repeat offences, it would stop pretty quickly.

Bethell closing in on his maiden FC century.

Amazing to see what happens when selectors take a punt on a kid (yes it was forced a bit on to them after Cox was injured)

EDIT : jinxed him 😅 , out for 96
