On Docherty from Wednesday's training session.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-01-08/judd-in-mint-condition

Young recruit Sam Docherty was also restricted in his training and spent the session sharpening his reflexes with development coach Michael Osborne.

Docherty has big wraps on him after making the move from the Brisbane Lions during last year's trade period.
I've got the boy in my starting team so I hope he's fit and firing for round 1.
If not, it will be hard for me to find another rookie replacement seeing how thin the DEF stocks are.

I'm with you on this and the other factor that has been lost in the FTB theory is his natural improvement.

2011: 83
2012: 91
2013: 96

That and the potential to spend more time in the midfield in his 4th full season which has traditionally been the breakout season for players in the past, I've got him ahead of a lot of the other defenders at the moment. Round 10 bye is handy as well.
Something else that might be worth noting, the lions might have a tough draw but apart from their trip to Tassie in Rd1, the other tough matchups (Gee, Ric, Syd, Ess) are all at the Gabba, before they face Nth away in Rd9 and bye Rd 10.

If I were to take him out, any suggestions on who should replace him?
I already have Laidler, KK, Cutler and Fuller.
Would have around $300k in the bank
Too early to tell if there are better options, but Delaney, Darley, might be worthy imo. Anyone have any idea how Shoenmakers is progressing? Could be a steal at $268k...

While were discussing Hanley, Voss moved him to half forward last year when he was struggling with the tag, had a couple of games where he kicked multiple goals.

Whilst playing as a half forward he spent a lot of time basically playing as a midfielder. New coach this year makes it hard to know what they want from him but would seem to be able to play multiple positions.

I've heard somewhere that Shoe'makers might be swung into attack (as he was originally a forward in junior years) as the hawks already have a stellar backline.

Not sure that will eventuate given that Lake probably only has one season left in him and Gibson is getting on as well (also Gibson is more suited to a 3rd tall roll IMO). I reckon Schoenmakers needs as much time to learn the craft in defence as possible.

Maverick Weller - 292k - STK. Really in two minds about including this guy in my side.... From the (limited) reports i've been reading it says he's been killing it in training however is he part of the saints best 22? (would really appreciate some saint supporters view on this and what they know about him), also is it too much or risky having both him and suckling as mid pricers!?!?...

Someone put me out of my misery :)

I've also heard that he has been killing it. But he is still on the rookie list and needs to be upgraded. From my limited knowledge being 12:30am, I would say that the saints are full in the back line which means he could play midfield. if upgraded to the senior list and named round 1 i will risk him over suckling :)

I love going for a risky player but I like to have a bit of history to go by if paying above 200k. Types like Weller and Docherty seem expensive to me for players with minimal game time.
I think the multiple vested Sutcliffe is more appealling as all he needs is an injury/great pre season to crack best 22 and you can be more confient we will go 80+ average

Not sure if it's been mentioned but Atley ($394k) looks like he'll be running through the mids this year as well.

http://www.nmfc.com.au/news/2014-01-10/the-middle-man

It’s often been suggested as the likely next step in his development, but North and AFL fans alike would be excited to learn Shaun Atley is eyeing a push into the midfield in 2014.

Having earnt a reputation as a dashing defender, the 21-year-old’s natural athleticism should hold him in good stead through the centre.

“The challenge for me is to push up into the midfield hopefully and try hold down a role in there and not just be a one dimensional player,” Atley told the team on SEN.

Should I pretend I never read this or??...

While my third most expensive defender is forgotten Saint Sam Fisher.

Fisher is underpriced after injuries ruined his 2013 season and his scores have taken a battering in the past two seasons as he has been asked to fight out of his division against the opposition's key forwards. Rewind to 2011 and he averaged 99 points a game as an attacking defender with a licence to run off his man. Picking him at age 31 is a risk (one of several in this squad but hey, it's January) but St Kilda has recruited a couple of key defenders (finally) so hopefully Sam can return to his rebounding ways. Not many defenders can average over 90 and Fisher did that every year from 2006-11.
I was actually thinking about starting him as i've read similar stuff lately and he'd effectively be taking Waters' spot in my team.

"He'd effectively take Waters spot in my team".......

.... is that the spot of the injured Defender, that goes in and out of the team, before finally succumbing to a season ending injury? :)

I've had one or two of them in my team, every year, too. I Wonder who will fill that role for me this year?! :p

Haha exactly. Waters actually took that spot from Grimes...and Grimes from Malceski..and Malceski from Drummond lol.

Unfortunately there's some truth to the above statement but I can't help but think Fisher still has something to offer and a 90-100 average is not impossible.

...think Geary, the FTB, and the saints and their favorable draw to begin the season...maybe???

What is Fisher priced at ?
If the saints have an easier draw he could be worth a look!

I'm not sure if Hanley will play down back this year(I feel his best position), toooooo many players left from our starting side last year to know the layout of the side, and I'm not sure how Leppa will use him.

Finished the year with a bang as well. 130, 94, 121 with 23, 23 and 34 touches as well.

Only thing I don't like about him is he almost always has a job to do whereas, if we believe what they're saying about Fisher, he'll be able to just run around and try and get the ball lol. Not sure how long opposition teams will let that go on for though.

$430,300 which is $900 more than Swallow who I think most will go for at that price. Grimes is $436,500 and DPP.
