I wonder what the thoughts were in 1994 when the AFL went to a top 8. I suspect it would have been similar.
From what I remember, people didn't mind it, but thought it was more about increased gates. No one thought 7th or 8th stood a realistic chance of a flag. No one thought it adversely affected 5th or 6th.
I think this new idea is a bit too gimicky.

I like it! Only changes I'd make:

Flanders (not in the squad) to Houston on field
Houston's spot on the bench to Xerri. Deserves a spot and 2nd ruck on the bench is common in the AA squad.
McKay to Waterman. Think he deserves a spot after so many goals in a bottom side. Super consistent too.

AFL reporters (or "experts" as this article calls them) have named their team. Good to see one of the finest wings in Marcus Bontempelli in his deserving place in the team.

AFL.com.au 2024 All-Australian team
FB:
Luke Ryan, Harris Andrews, Sam Collins
HB: Lachie Whitfield, Jacob Weitering, Dayne Zorko
C: Errol Gulden, Patrick Cripps (c), Marcus Bontempelli
HF: Isaac Heeney, Jesse Hogan, Chad Warner
FF: Dylan Moore, Charlie Curnow, Jeremy Cameron
Foll: Max Gawn, Nick Daicos, Caleb Serong
I/C: Lachie Neale, Adam Treloar, Nick Blakey, Tristan Xerri

My attempt :-

Notes:

Ryan/Andrews/Collins/Weitering is too tall - Ryan can play 3rd tall. Weitering & Andrews are really full backs so only pick 1, Gov is a true CHB. Sheezel has been outstanding all year, I know he transitioned into the midfield but him & Sinclair (on my bench) rotate through half back & mid.

I wanted true winger, Gulden a lock & Brayshaw does spend much time on the wing as well as in the middle - he had a big finish to the season.

Heeney & Butters do spend time at half fwd, more than the other mids in the squad & they are locks to be in the 22 so makes sense to place them at half fwd.

Moore & Stengle were the 2 best small fwds this season so they get the fwd pockets.

Xerri has to be the AA ruck, amazing season. Neale,Merrett,Serong & Sinclair all excellent seasons again - all deserving so couldn't squeeze Max in. Xerri averaged 84% TOG ruck time this year anyway, so only 1 true ruck required & Curnow/Cripps can offer relief when required.

I see ya thinking 2.7 goals in a rubbish team is absolutely better than 2.4 in a medium team. 17 and 18 games, close enough. Houston onfield over Flanders, sure, but he stays in the team. While the AA experts pick 2 rucks, Smitch tried it at the hawks, didn't work, Goodwin tried it, didn't work so I refuse not to learn from that. One ruck with Harry McKay on the backup 1.6 HOs. Think this structure is what a coach would choose to play with. Great as Xerri has been, clearly emg, along with Brent Daniel (edit, actually Stengle tkx Shannon) and Crippa for mine. Really wanted Daniel in the team, just destroyed the hawks in the final Q up here in CBR - he just wanted it the most.

I really think the emergency guys should get a gig and a premiership medal as well.

Like the Brayshaw pick, neat choice. And yes Stengle in if I run a shorter forward line, or probably on the bench over Daniel as much as he hammered us! Hope they go with the two dedicated wings though. Who's ya Captain? Lots of choices there...

Not sure if I’m missing something, but Flanders isn’t in the AA squad. Are you picking a team based on any player or from the official squad?
