Shane Warne 1 of only 16 people currently eliminated in Day 1A of the Main Event.

Well, I'm going the name-drops today.

I met Warney at the Main Event in 2014 on one of the breaks between play. I don't smoke but I was with some mates who do so we were outside and sure enough Warney was smoking like a chimney; I'm fairly sure he was still being paid by Nicorette at the time to flog their chewy.

He went to school in Mentone a few hundred metres from where I was in the same year. Luke Beveridge was at the school I was at in the same class as well.

Warney was as good a bowler as he is bad at poker. Despite the coaching he's got from world-class players I'm not sure he's improved that much, if at all, over the years at cards.

Having said all that even the best players in the world bust on day one of the Main, there's even great players who have never even made it past day one due to the variance (ie luck) involved in the whole thing.

That's an understandable call by Warney, top pair on the board plus a king kicker, four parts of a King high flush. Not too many hands would have been ahead of him, his opponent did have one that was. Seen much worse calls than that. Worth a risk and hard to throw away.

I'm awful at poker too, so I sympathize with him there.

Agreed roughly with that take, dependent on stack sizes, it's less defendable an action the deeper the stacks are unless Warnes approach is just to gambol his stack up.

Day 1B of the WSOP featuring Daniel Negreanu on the feature table but John Hesp who finished 4th in 2017 has been eliminated.

Showed his class and champion qualities against Granny. She has pocket Aces, plays out to the turn with four spades on the table, both have the flush and he has a King high flush in his hand. But after some back and forwards chat as he likes to engage in, he works out to fold his hand and even does it verbally signalling he is doing it as thinks she has pocket Aces and one of them is the spade, which indeed was spot on.
Love it.
Credit to Granny not really giving anything obvious away verbally but body language and the way she played from start suggest pocket aces was very possible. He got it spot on. Brilliant that he can talk and think on his feet. Has his own style to suit way he thinks and engages with people. He can do all that and think it through all at once which is not easy. Real master skill at the game.

He is good. He does not talk to let everyone know how good he is. He does it to engage people, both for fun in general and game information he may gather from doing so. He is very clever and good in spirit he plays with. Lots of players cannot talk and still think clearly at same time. That is what is impressive. Many would have to stay silent to be able to think straight.

I agree, he seems likeable, but I also think he could come to the same conclusions without speaking so much. It sometimes seems he says everything that is going through his mind. Most pros these days don't engage Daniel and just keep that manikin look, so I don't think he gets too many tells from top players.

I do not think he says everything that is going through his mind. He says enough of some of what he is thinking that is about the hand and cards to see if it can illicit information from other player or players that they might not otherwise give out, whether they do it by accident or ego.

A lot of pros knowing this because they can observe this trait over time from it being on tv or past games, will not engage for same reason.
It is all part of the game. It is what makes live poker in person so much fun. All types of personalities.

ha ha, it does look a bit annoying but guys in charge a little over top in way they dealt with it.

Speaking of annoying. A couple of years ago dropped into the Casino in city for a few hours of poker.
Greg Matthews was at the table. As you can imagine, he does not shut up. He was pretty rude to dealer to from memory. Kept trying to tell him how to do his job.

Heard a fair few stories about Matthews around the cricketing traps. None of them complimentary, so your story doesn’t surprise me.
