This is bit also really interesting a bit further down the article for anyone considering Gaff...................

Frontline midfielders Luke Shuey (calf) and Andrew Gaff (tight quad) have missed recent sessions with minor injuries, however, giving the Eagles the chance to expose more players to the midfield in training.
Wow on Gaff.
He never has an injury although it is only tightness. Have him currently in my side. Only missed 1 game through injury since 2011 and that was Jonas knocking him out.

Thats big. No Ben Brown and Weideman to start. Tmac will probably have to stay forward and maybe Petracca fwd with Harmes playing more mid.
Not sure about this. Tmac “might” play forward but he hasn’t been very successful there since the year Melb played finals. Also, Dees have Mitch Brown who I think can play Fwd as well or better than Tmac. As for Tracca, I don’t think this changes things for him at all... He is not especially brilliant as a Fwd and I think he will continue his move to the Midfield where he has more impact on the game. Possibly with some stints in the Fwd line when resting during to lower rotations.

gaff is 29 this year, shuey 31 and as per my previous post both have pre-season injuries, Yeo has OP. wouldnt be surprised to see Dug's in the middle a lot more this year! With Def status he's high on my watch list as a whitfield replacement

Edit: thinking more about this, we recruited langdon and witherden who can both play the HB role. Personal view is that duggan would be ahead of those 2 for Mid time, while they would be more likely to play HB. I think Dugs is definitely a shot at Top 10 Def this year, and at $448k is not stupidly priced if it goes pear-shaped. if it does go pear-shaped, i will come back and delete this post so no proof exists of the top 10 comment :p
Just quoting for posterity ;)

But seriously, really like Duggan as a breakout candidate. The backs are so loaded this year, I really like the premiums and I really like the value guys as well. Most years I'd be all over Duggan, Luko, Williams, et al.

Truck is yet another example of midfielder who is a decent forward but actually more damaging playing midfield where he pushes forward into genuine mismatches. Coaches seem to get way too enamoured with midfielders who kick goals and then playing them forward more, the ones who are genuinely good forwards is exceedingly rare (Danger and Dusty are about it right now). Coaches see a guy like Parker or Heeney or Bont kick goals from the midfield and then think they'll do great up forward but there's a massive difference between pushing forward matched up with a Cotchin or even Dusty and starting forward with a Grimes or Vlastuin on you. Petracca last year basically matched his best season for goals and goals assist despite playing forward about 25% as much as the previous 3 years. Bont last year kicked more goals in the 2nd half of the season when he went full time midfield than he did in the first half where he was rotting up forward.

But Goodwin isn't very smart so probably ignore the above and assume Truck at FF so we can wonder what happened to him when Rampe, Grimes and co are all shutting him down every week :)

Yeah..happened with Neil Craig and Danger big time....everyone knew he would explode and be twice as damaging if played MID F/T. It’s very frustrating to see for sure.

The issues for me with a player like Duggan is that he needs two key things to change, average and durability.

If he play a lot of mid time then I could see him improving 10-20ppg, but he’d also need to play every game which is something he’s never achieved (averages missing 3 games a year over the last 4 seasons).

I always feel a lot more comfortable with picking a breakout where only one thing needs to click eg average up (Sam Walsh) or durability (Ziebell). It’s why I’m still uncomfortable having Wayne Milera in my side.

Brown and Weideman out will have no impact on Trac.

Just means M Brown and T Mac will play instead so exciting times as per usual for Dees fans..
Yeh a smart coach would play it the right way just don't know about Goodwin. Luke Jackson and Mitch Brown would be an interesting two-pronged attack if no Tmac or Petracca down there.

This is exactly what I was thinking, but you said it much better than me 👍

Shame on me, I had completely neglected Dogga in my thinking. Yes, he could also play forward and is probably the best option out of all three!

Willie Rioli’s future in the game remains unclear.

The West Coast forward is still sidelined under a provisional suspension which was handed down in August 2019 after he allegedly tampered with a urine test.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson told The West Australian this week that the club has been given “no update, no direction” in understanding when a penalty, if any, will be imposed on Rioli who is facing a potential four-year ban.
