Can he pinch hit in the ruck though?

Not sure who else in Port's best 22 could help Lycett out in the ruck @Connoisseur ?
Thought he used to pinch hit in the ruck for GWS , otherwise Marshall can and/or Aliir.

Lycett will probably ruck 70%+ of the time anyway , think Hayes is more of a ruck than a forward type.

Not entirely sure where to put this, but here seems as good as anywhere.

A thought just occurred to me: aside from players missing games due to Covid, they’re also going to be returning after having Covid.

Some will be back at close to 100% quickly, but others won’t be. Those who aren’t could score lower for a round or more, leading to a price drop.

This could make it easier for us to upgrade into premiums - especially if we are a little flexible as to their identity.

That's right, all players will be affected differently from having Covid. Probably we won't know until the high pressure AFL games are played.
I just hope it aren't my Team's players who drop in price. ;)
Majority of them should be fine because of having the vaccinations and Omicron being less severe.

The noises from various government officials, apart from WA, seems to be that we are finally heading to a point where those who get sick go to hospital and everyone else keeps getting vaccinated and just carries on. The federal Chief Medical Officer said 99.9% of people who now get covid have no lasting effects. The Qld Chief Medical Officer suggested that QR check ins could be irrelevant soon and scrapped. A small door knock on the Gold Coast by the health department found that 1 in 6 had had COVID without knowing. The close contact definition has been significantly watered down. The hospital admissions have been a lot lower than forecasted.
Could be another twist in the tale and maybe the AFL will continue to scrutinise players and officials more harshly than the general public but the current trend would suggest not much disruption to the season.

Definitely pinch hit at GWS. Was meh in the middle, but dangerous up forward where he'd take the ball out of the ruck and snap it.

It’s possible, but I think it would probably require things to continue to progress pretty quickly (which admittedly has been happening recently).

The BBL only finished a couple of weeks ago and was hugely disrupted, with quite a few players saying that they were struggling in their first game or two back. Cricket can be a physical game, but AFL would be more taxing for most players, so I suspect some of those who do get it could be a bit slow to get back to their normal output.

Presumably if they’re unfit to play, they won’t return … but it might be a bit like a concussion, in that it leads to a slowish return for some, and reduces prices just enough that players are a bit more accessible.

Saints young gun suffers suspected ACL tear during match sim

ST KILDA young gun Nick Coffield has suffered a suspected ACL tear during match simulation at Mars Stadium on Friday morning.

The 22-year-old went down early in the session and immediately appeared in distress, clutching his right knee before being attended to by medical staff.

Play was brought to a standstill for five minutes while the young defender was helped off the ground in Ballarat.

Coffield is set undergo scans in Melbourne on Saturday morning, but there are grave concerns the defender will require a knee reconstruction, wiping out all of 2022.

"Early assessments from our medical team suggest it’s an ACL, but we’ll need to wait for scans to confirm the injury," chief operating officer Simon Lethlean said.

"This is obviously a really disappointing blow for Nick who has been showing positive signs all pre-season.

"Whatever the outcome, we know that Nick will attack his rehab with complete professionalism and the club will be supporting him every step of the way."

It is a devastating blow for the 2017 No. 8 pick who has been one of St Kilda's most impressive performers on the track this pre-season.

After finishing fifth in the 2020 Trevor Barker Award following a breakout season, Coffield struggled for consistency last year but impressed many inside RSEA Park with his dedication and looked set to take the next step in 2022.

SYDNEY has revealed three of its brightest talents are battling with injuries just five weeks away from round one.

Young guns Ollie Florent and James Rowbottom both picked up injuries in recent intraclub matches, while newly appointed co-captain Callum Mills is still on a modified training program.

Mills, who was last week elevated to co-captain alongside Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, only played one of the Swans' final four matches in 2021 as he battled an Achilles issue and appears to still be struggling with the issue.

The club said in December he was ahead of schedule, but he has still yet to join in full training ahead of their first practice match against GWS on February 25.

"We have spent a fair bit of time with Callum throughout September and October working on his strength," head of physiotherapy and medical services Damian Raper said.

"He started running towards the backend of last year and slowly build up his training loads, and is on a modified training program at the moment and working on getting him back into match play."

Rowbottom had surgery after fracturing a metacarpal during an intraclub match with the club set to provide an update on his recovery timeframe next week.

Florent suffered a lateral ankle sprain and has spent a few days in a moonboot, but is expected to return to training next week.

Meanwhile, Sam Naismith is progressing well from his knee reconstruction and youngster Marc Sheather remains on modified duties after suffering a stress fracture in his foot.

Florent and Rowbottom are very dangerous "fool's gold" creators for the likes of Stephens and a few other Swans. They're in our best 22 and given Horse's irrational love of them both I'd argue quite firmly (I'm not sure I have either of them as genuine best 22 guys right now after their last couple of seasons) so if they're not there and others are filling the spots they'll get pulled straight back in based on past selections.
