ST KILDA veteran Paddy Ryder won't take part in any pre-season practice match action and is no guarantee to return in time to face Collingwood on the opening weekend of the 2022 season.

The 33-year-old only managed 12 games in 2021 – none after round 19 – due to a lingering issue with his Achilles, which caused him trouble during his time at Port Adelaide.

AFL.com.au understands Ryder's progress has been slower than first anticipated but the Saints won't take any risks with the ruckman, given his age, the nature of his injury and his importance to Brett Ratten's side.

The timing of the $2.3 million resurfacing of RSEA Park hasn’t helped Ryder's bid from the injury due to the club training on seven or eight different surfaces over the pre-season, all of varying quality. This isn’t an issue for almost every player, but it has been for Ryder.

Does Tom Campbell come in as a R2 $312.7k ruck/forward. Played well last practice match. Only if Ryder is out long term

I am hoping it brings Jack Hayes officially onto the list as a 102 Ruck/Fwd that the saints will play as Marshall's backup ;)

South Australian state league star Jack Hayes has been given the chance to stake his claim for a long-awaited AFL berth, with St Kilda inviting the utility to train with the club over the summer in a bid to fill a list opening at Moorabbin.

Hayes, 24, has been a gun in the SANFL for several years, making a name for himself at Woodville West-Torrens. In 2021 alone he captained the SA state team, finished equal third in the Magarey Medal and won the Jack Oatey medal for best afield in the grand final as the Eagles claimed back-to-back flags.

The 192cm utility averaged just under 20 disposals, more than seven score involvements and a goal in the SANFL this year.

More info on Jack Hayes, actually listed as 194 cms :-

Hayes is a dangerous and versatile utility who averaged 128 ranking points, 19.6 possessions, 10.8 contested possessions, 1.1 goals, 4.3 tackles and 7.1 score assists in his 20 SANFL games this year.

Jack Hayes has impressed since joining St Kilda as a train-on player.

At only 194cm he isn’t a pure key position player on size but given his running ability and marking power is able to cover the ground and amass huge possession tallies.

His SANFL premiership coach Jade Sheedy told the Herald Sun on Thursday he could make an impact at AFL level.

“He plays as a forward-ruck for us and he’s only 194cm but he does have a huge heart. His ability to throw himself at every contest and will himself at every ball separates him from the rest in our competition.

“The knock on him about why he hasn’t got drafted is he is too small but you can’t measure someone’s heart and he has long arms and stretches out long at the footy and jumps well and takes the ball at its highest point. He plays above his height.

“People in SANFL circles can’t believe he hasn’t been given a chance at AFL level. That is universal, not just from our footy club, so I hope he get an opportunity and it’s one that would be well and truly deserved.

“What he has done in our competition is pretty significant. He was second in the Magarey Medal and it’s pretty rare for someone who plays up forward, the Magarey has always been a midfield award like the Brownlow so he’s pretty dominant.”

Indeed, look at his last 3 years in the SANFL :-

Jack Hayes (St Kilda) RUCK/FWD
2021 SC ave: 128 (SANFL)

Hayes is top of the list for KFC SuperCoaches out of these train-on players for two reasons. One, his scoring dominance in the SANFL across a three year period, which has seen the mobile big man record season averages of 128, 124 and 105. And second, he is set to be a basement RUC/FWD rookie - valuable as a swing and a cash generator. Hayes is in the box seat to secure a list spot at the Saints after an impressive pre-season, and the 24-year-old could contend for a Round 1 debut.

Very impressive

Is this a function of being ISO with Covid, maybe they are being conservative and if there was a 4 point game this week he would be playing.

Does show played could be out for 2 weeks, dont think we will trade players, bench strength will be tested. watch those cheap rookies.

I hate the direction of this sport, was just a great tackle... Also seems like bull**** you can get suspended from the real season for an unofficial practice match, kind of thing that makes the clubs not televise them.
You can get suspended from any game where you have real umpires, even intraclubs. O'Hailpin got a four game suspension by the AFL for clocking Cloke back in the day in a trial game because they had an umpire.

Think hell be ahead of Hayes, not sure where Hayes makes it as an AFL footballer to be honest, probably a big reason why he went undrafted for so long.
