SYDNEY has ruled three players out of round one and co-captain Callum Mills will miss Friday night's practice match against Carlton due to a finger injury.

Tom Hickey (calf strain), Robbie Fox (calf strain) and Ryan Clarke (hamstring strain) will all miss the Swans' opener against Gold Coast on March 18.

Hickey and Clarke are set to miss multiple games early in the season, while Fox has been ruled out of the opener.

In fairness to Preuss other players would have ducked and played for the high free kick. He's probably been training to not give away that free kick.
You might be right. I think he just got the waist and the knees confused as to the area where you are meant to tackle someone. He probably did remember it had to be a body part below shoulder level, forgot which and just picked one at random.

That's still pretty intelligent compared to some rucks, seen them do some very dumb things.

I actually think his technique was excellent. 99% of that is Berry jumping and angling. You should tackle to the thigh/hip region, especially now that pinning arms has absurd suspension risk and as a guy that size you have to make an effort to get low and drive up through the tackle.

Preuss didn't drive him into the ground and he didn't catch and powerbomb, which are both very likely outcomes to jumping like that, the second you give up your powerbase like that as the player with the ball you're utterly helpless, it's just reckless.

I know from my playing days (when tackling hard was expected) that there's no way Berry is coming off that lightly for his stupidity, textbook example of how creating rules that overly protect bad actions encourages the bad actions.

Funniest part is Preuss had another tackle in this game that was far "worse" under the modern tackling too hard regime and everyone is focusing on this one because of Berry's actions.

Of all ruckmen Preuss should have tackling technique down pat coming from a rugby background
Very different techniques to tackling though because of the different rules. Especially now that the AFL has outlawed tackling too hard as tackling to the ground is a fundamental requirement of rugby. You also go much lower in rugby. Also very different tackling primarily front on to the 360 degree nature of AFL.

He tackles like someone with a rugby background, he tackles very well but way too physically for modern AFL where we're just steps away from putting flags on the players. Even just 10 years ago, we'd be lauding how well he tackles rather than thinking it's a suspension risk.

Part of the problem is that AFL players are on average shorter in comparison so he needs to get down more (before we even get into the ducking angle), and driving a guy into the ground is fine as long as you don't go above the horizontal with them. Most of his suspensions would be completely above board and probably a highlight by comparison.

Wow - Hopper & Taranto are going to be in the middle for the vast majority of the game, even if Prestia plays he will be managed you would think

Star forward suffers strain, ruck in moonboot
North Melbourne’s Cam Zurhaar will be monitored in the lead-up to Round 1 after scans revealed he suffered a calf strain in Saturday’s pre-season match at Ikon Park
By North Media - Just now

North Melbourne’s Cam Zurhaar will be monitored in the lead-up to Round 1 after scans revealed he suffered a calf strain in Saturday’s pre-season match at Ikon Park.

The 24-year-old reported awareness in his left calf and didn’t return to the field after half-time.

“Cam will be on light duties and monitored closely over the next week. It will be a matter of waiting to see how he responds, then progressing his rehab as his symptoms allow,” general manager of football Todd Viney said.

Callum Coleman-Jones also suffered a partial tear of his left plantar fascia during Saturday afternoon’s VFL win over Footscray.

The ruckman will remain in a moonboot for a short period and will be progressed through a rehab program to allow his plantar fascia to heal.

Good news for injured Dogs, young gun no certainty for R1

Three Western Bulldogs players have been cleared of serious injury following its practice match against North Melbourne

Duryea was sent to hospital during Saturday's practice game against North Melbourne after hurting his neck in a tackle by Kangaroos co-captain Jy Simpkin, but scans cleared the small defender of structural damage later in the day.

The 31-year-old was at the club on Monday and has shown positive early signs, with the Bulldogs hopeful he will train later in the week and be able to press his claims for a spot against Melbourne on March 18.

Crozier was also sent to hospital on Saturday after suffering a compound dislocation of his finger late in the third quarter against the Roos before being discharged on Saturday night.

The former Docker isn't expected to train this week but should return to the main group at the start of next week to put his hand up for the clash with the Dees.

Richards copped a corked quad early in the second quarter and took no further part in the Bulldogs' 58-point win at Ikon Park. The 23-year-old will have a light week on the track but is set to train fully next week.

Young gun Weightman, meanwhile, was a late withdrawal from the Kangaroos match after failing to prove his fitness following a recent adductor strain.

The former first-round pick, who will wear the famous No. 3 guernsey in 2023, trained fully last Wednesday but the club has opted for a conservative approach given he is still experiencing some discomfort.

The 22-year-old isn't a certain starter to face the Demons on the first Saturday of the season, although the club is hopeful he will be available.

Johannisen is still recovering from a calf niggle and is also in a race against the clock to put his hand up for round one.
