Stephenson gets 10-match suspension for betting infringements

The league had pushed for an even longer ban, though in a major blow to Collingwood Stephenson will miss the rest of the 2019 home and away season.
He will be able to play finals.
Sources have confirmed that Stephenson's wagering consisted of at least two small bets on Collingwood-related outcomes - not one solitary bet.
The young star betted on individual teammates performing well, such as gaining a high possession tally, and he did not bet against Collingwood or a teammate.
The AFL's general counsel Andrew Dillon will address the media early this afternoon and Collingwood's CEO Mark Anderson and football manager Geoff Walsh will speak, along with Stephenson, at 2pm.

The AFL administration needs to be gutted.
A totally justified and worthy suspension. What an idiot, he's let down the team and the fans, not just himself. The rules are very very clear. Makes you wonder what is going on from the neck up with some of these guys .... and all this whilst the Pies are well and truly in a premiership window. Am livid.

I listened to his presser just before. No offence to the bloke but he seems like he is missing quite a few brain cells. The PR department mustn’t have exactly prepped him well either, some of the answer he gave were ridiculous.
I highly doubt the 3 bets totalled $36 with some the answers he was giving:
‘The first two times I did it I didn’t think too much of it but the third time I did, I just knew I had to self report because I knew if I didn’t it was going to keep escalating’
They asked if the bets influenced how he played to and he said:
‘They didn’t at all, after the game I’d just check my phone in Bucks presser and look at the stats and see that we didn’t hit’
Do you bet on other sports and what are your regular betting habits?
‘I don’t bet on any other sports and never on other AFL games. Just like to have a bit of a bet on the Melbourne spring carnival, that’s all’
Said when he reported to the Collingwood bloke that he had no idea what the consequences would be and hadn’t thought about it.
I bet the facts changed a bit between that 3rd bet, telling the Collingwood official and then telling the AFL.
Those first two quotes scream it was a lot more than $36 in 3 total bets.
He could have easily had the mate put a few hundred on and someone else (or himself) putting $12 on the mates account and just self report that the $12 bets were his, when any larger bets could easily have been him as well.
The bets included disposal bets, Collingwood margin bets, Collingwood to win, himself to kick a goal, himself to kick 3 goals, a teammate to kick a goal etc.

I can't understand how dumb some of these AFL players must be.
Given we hear how much education they are given re alcohol , drugs , gambling , social media etc etc why even place yourself in this situation.
Yes the temptation is there , but if you need (want) to have a bet then bet on the dogs or horses or a 100 other sports around the world not your own sport and team !!!!!! no matter how harmless the person thinks it is DUMB DUMB DUMB.
Now the whole team suffers from his actions.
I realise gambling is a serious issue in society , so hopefully it is not something more.
Surely the risk far outweighs any reward , so why do it to start with.
