GREATER Western Sydney star Tom Green will miss the start of the season after straining his calf at training last week, while Sam Taylor has entered the League’s concussion protocols.

The 24-year-old will be sidelined for at least the next month after the frustrating late pre-season injury.

Green is set to miss the Opening Round clash against Collingwood and round one against Melbourne, but could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Might open the door for James Leake - 120K defender.

Averaged 27 touches and 113 SuperCoach points through a six-match period in the VFL last season after returning from injury. With Peatling & Perryman both gone along with Green now injured, a few spots opening up in the giants midfield.

Some more info about him, versatile player/ plays half back also :-

However, given his reputation throughout junior footy as a versatile player, Adam Kingsley has opted to change his role in 2025. The Tasmanian has been turned into an out-and-out midfielder, playing around the stoppages and even contesting against Tom Green during their recent match simulation.

It’s a sign of the trust the club has in Leake long-term to play him in that position so early, and it’s a vote of confidence he’s not planning to waste.

“In my under 18s and juniors I played lots of backline and that was a position I was comfortable in,” Leake said. “Then this year, there’s a big shift going into midfield which I’m really excited about.

“I’ve got a fair bit of work to do on the midfield craft, but I’m just using all the tools to push me forward. And I’ve got dudes like Tom Green, Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio who are helping me pick up everything as quickly as possible.

Coniglio may also struggle early to play but then they have O'Halloran, Daniels, Kelly, Rowston, Callaghan, Ward, Bedford and Greene as options aswell.

Well, that solves the dilemma of wanting him in my starting team but trying to avoid early bye players. Was quite keen on him but definitely not starting him now.

A little worrying with the comments he made last week with a corkie and now it's a strain.

Tom Green is another player who had to come off early as he deals with a corked calf. He came from the ground early in the match with the Giants managing the star midfielder ahead of the season. Green suggested earlier in the week on the club’s podcast that it’s an issue he and the club have been conservative with this year, and it shouldn’t be a long-term problem.

It could be a similar issue to what plagued Parish a few years back.

CARLTON is still hopeful its superstar key forward Charlie Curnow could take part in the side's round one clash with Richmond, despite undergoing minor knee surgery on Tuesday.

Curnow underwent a procedure to remove a screw in his knee left over from a previous surgery, having suffered from discomfort in recent weeks that culminated in him departing a match simulation drill early a fortnight ago.

The Blues opted to send Curnow in for the surgery, potentially hampering his round one chances, rather than force the dual Coleman Medal winner to play through the discomfort during the entire season.

The club expects Curnow to recommence running within the next week, reiterating that he remains a chance to face Richmond in 23 days' time, but confident he will be available for a round two clash with Hawthorn if not.

Carlton had previously been hopeful Curnow would take part in at least one pre-season match against either St Kilda or Greater Western Sydney, having already undergone both ankle and knee surgery earlier in pre-season.

Sam Walsh (hamstring) is still a chance to feature in at least one scratch match, likely the second against the Giants, with Nic Newman (knee) and Alex Cincotta (hip) the only Blues regulars completely ruled out for round one.

Father-son recruit Ben Camporeale has been sidelined for a month with an ankle infection, while uncapped Irish pair Matt Duffy (knee) and Rob Monahan (groin) are also expected to miss the start of the season.

Could mean TDK is forward for a round.

Ralphsmith to miss early rounds

Hugo Ralphsmith will not play in the early rounds of the 2025 AFL season.

Richmond wingman Hugo Ralphsmith has been ruled out of the early rounds of the 2025 AFL season.

Ralphsmith injured his hamstring in the second period of Monday's match simulation against West Coast, with scans revealing a moderate-grade strain.

Richmond will take a conservative approach to the rehabilitation.

The 23-year-old played a career-high 18 AFL games in 2024, taking his career tally to 50 matches.

Might help Kaleb Smith's chances of playing early on.

After making a comeback from a recent training mishap, Max King has been struck down with another complaint that could spell trouble for the Saints.

St Kilda spearhead Max King has sought specialist advice on an unexpected knee hiccup which has put him in a race for round one.
King has experienced some right knee pain in his comeback from a recent training mishap and will face a crucial fitness test at the club on Saturday.

Importantly, two specialists have said his knee is stable and does not require more surgery, fuelling the club’s confidence he will take on Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in the club’s season-opener.

However, King needs to run without any pain or restriction on Saturday to ensure can re-join main training as early as next week and take on the Crows in three weeks’ time.

The 24-year-old will not play in the practice match against Carlton on Saturday and will almost certainly miss the AAMI Community Series clash against Port Adelaide at RSEA Park on Saturday week.

Football boss David Misson said the gun forward has reported some minor pain while completing 100m run-throughs at the club over the past fortnight, but importantly ran pain-free on Thursday.

King underwent a full knee reconstruction on the same right knee in 2018 before he was drafted pick four.

If he misses the start of the season then Marshall could well play more fwd, Boyd main ruck
