If one is picking premium mid players to be keepers, then it doesn't matter when they are tagged in the season.
I don't see the players being tagged early in the season as that relevant, more important is how often they will be tagged, by good taggers, during the whole season.
I think it's relevant, especially early in the season when you have limited captain options to choose from. Also if you're playing for overall rankings then everyone else can get a leg up on you if they're able to trade in a Bontempelli-type later on without having to wear the tag-affected <80 scores that you had to put up with.

Over the course of a season it probably doesn't matter and you should always pick premiums you think are value, but if you want to get off to a good start then it's something to at least consider.

True, but de Boer destroyed all of them last year. I know I got a rude shock when I saw that 3 of my premium mids had GWS in the first 3 weeks.
Agree and share your concerns .... but keep coming back to a "notion" that the game will evolve from the transition to Netball we saw last year ...

- I thought that the "inventiveness and adaptiveness" of the coaches to fully exploit the new rules was severely lacking ....

- Also thought we were stuck in a time warp at times .... coaches trying to "save / stay in" games as long as possible and then push for that last quarter effort to win games ... nothing new in that but exacerbated by the low scores IMO ... thanks Gilly BTW !!

- Now reminds me of the NBA ... becomes boring after a while ... only really need to tune into the last 10 minutes of most early season games when teams are actually trying ...

It can create an opportunity to trade in the tagged player at a lower price, especially if that player has a run of hard games. One down game may not impact price significantly, but 2 out 3 lower scores may have result in a significant price drop.

Good relevant points!

The Captain options, I think I would have that covered with the Grundy/Comben combination.

Agree, that it is quite possible that an early tagged player can score less, but also possible that player may not be tagged.
Or that player may be more expensive to trade in later, if he has a surge in points.

Getting off to a good start is good, but I think team structure is important as well to consider.

FYI for anyone considering TKelly as a POD

https://www.afl.com.au/news/384772/...ey-to-unlocking-eagles-r1-selection-headache-

Coach Adam Simpson revealed that Kelly playing key minutes as a forward could solve several issues after the loss of Willie Rioli (ASADA ban), Daniel Venables (concussion) and Jarrod Cameron (groin).

"It connects to the loss of Willie and Venables and how can we get more goals out of our mids when they go forward a bit more," Simpson told AFL.com.au on Wednesday.

"Traditionally we play seven forwards (one on the bench) and our mids never go forward, you don't see Gaff or Shuey forward too often.

"Do we explore that a bit more with Tim? That's something we're working through because that's something he likes doing."

Do we really believe this though? Freo don't have any mature body midfielders, Fyfe I expect will play a large part in the midfield and rest forward. they may save some time on Fyfes playing career doing that but it'll certainly shorten Brayshaws and Cerras if they're left to lead the midfield.
Fyfe quoted in todays West Australian. Interpret how you will.

"That (playing forward) will be a bit of the strategy going into the year. Playing 20 to 22 games and having a big impact in 15 to 18 of them."

The story also noted (paraphrasing here) that he wanted to work his way into the season and "not try and be the best player in the competition in the five rounds". Also pumped up Darcy Tucker.

I don’t believe Fyfe knows how not to be the best player in the competition, I think Fyfe does what Fyfe wants, loves the spot light but with other options around and fully priced I won’t be starting him.

I agree that Fyfe is Fyfe and will go flat out during games. But my reasoning is because he is such a competitive beast who likes to win. Coach may force him to play Fwd a lot more, mainly to rest him.

Anyone sold on Tom Mitchell or is it best to avoid given he is coming back from a lengthy layoff. Want to pick him but not sold yet. I need to pick 2 of Mitchell, Josh Kelly, Fyfe, Neale and Danger

Neale and Danger for durability. Josh Kelly if you like scoring ability with added injury risk (although has had a great preseason). Fyfe has a friendly fixture to start the year but may spend more time forward. Titch is a wait and see for me... Not cheap enough to take the risk in my books.
Personally I have Neale and Danger, but Jelly is very tempting.
