Interested to see how people are looking to structure their team this year. I'm currently looking at 11 out and out premiums, and then 4 injury affected past premos. Currently:
3/0/5
5/2/4
1/1/1
2/1/5

What's everyone looking at?

Currently

3/0/5
5/1/5 (DSwallow)
1/1/1 (Sandi)
2/1/5 (Bennell)

Not sure on how Bennell and Swallow are tracking but have the coin to swap out for a prem and rookie if need be at this stage

I don't often post my team particularly when it's close to round 1 but we're still a fair way out so wouldn't mind some opinions!

DEF: Rance, Adams, Laird, McDonald, Keefe, Hampton (Vickers-Willis, Newman)

MID: Danger, Pendles, JPK, Hanners, Fyfe, Petrevski-Seton, Brodie, Myers (Berry, Powell-Pepper, Maynard)

RUC: Goldy, Sandi (Strnadica)

FWD: Dahlhaus, Macrae, Henney, Roughy, Pickett, McKay (Rioli, Eddy)

I've tried to put in all rookies from the 'best 22' thread. Have also added one of the GC kids as I think at least one will play round 1.

Other premium or stepping stone picks I've considered on each line are;

DEF: Montagna, Vince, Johannisen, Z Williams, M Hibberd

MID: Treloar, Rockliff, Bontempelli, Beams, D Swallow

RUC: Gawn

FWD: Nobody

Don't want to pay 550k or more for a defender so rules out those guys. A little worried about Adams and his injury history but we are so low on defenders that will play majority midfield so I've picked him mainly for that reason.

I can see the merit in starting with Beams and/or Swallow but right now I'm preferring a lower risk midfield. Treloar, Rocky and Bont have all been in and out of my team but the current guys suit my byes and are reliable with the exception of Fyfe who provides such great value.

Goldy over Gawn at this stage due to cash and value but if I go set and forget then it will be Goldy and Gawn.

Forward options are seriously limited. Can't see myself picking anybody but the guys I've mentioned. Will be monitoring Roughy closely during the JLT series and will want some indication that he will play most if not all games before picking him.

Thoughts?

Looks very solid BB, I like it. A few comments:

- Your def is dramatically deeper than most, with four premiums and two rookies above bottom price. I'd consider whether you want to go that deep - you're probably expressing a non-consensus view on the cheap def rookies at this stage. If I had to cut a def, I'd make it either Adams or McDonald. Alternately. You could reinvest some of your rookie case up forward, where I think it might help you more.

- Your midfield is extremely solid. Hanners will be a POD as things stand, hopefully he is fully fit with a good base of training behind him come round one. Interesting that you're steering clear of Beams as well.

- I have the same rucks.

- I like your forward premos - I have your F1 and F2, and keep switching Roughy and Heeney as my F3. There is no one else I really like either. Your forward rookies are a bit of a concern, I gather most people think it's a very thin list there. This is actually the line where I would look to invest in some higher end rookie-priced names. I have McCarthy, Knights and McCluggage at F4-6 at the moment, one of more of those might be worth a look.

- As an overall comment, I think you've gone fairly low-risk here, particularly because I think some of your riskier picks will be popular. I'm not sure whether that is intentional, but if so, I'd say you have hit your mark.

Good luck!

Possibly overspending on the first 4 mids compared to others that will look for a value pick. I'm not talking about Beams or Murphy but maybe a Bont, Titchell or Heppell.Or even Swallow who might be a clayton's M8 until luxury trades.
I'm interested Ben if you have always run with 2 donuts from the start? Particulary in 2013, 2014.

So do you see Heeney as a keeper? Or is it wait and see and maybe switch to a forward that jumps out of the crowd mid season if required?

That first post took a while! :p Hopefully it won't be as long until the next one :)

I like the structure, and we have nine non-rookies in common, so I think this looks pretty good.

The one thing I'd say is that it's always hard to get 15 premiums in. I'd look at trimming one of them, and investing the cash in making the others really strong picks. The ones I'd consider upgrading/downgrading would be Mitchell, Murphy, Martin and Caddy. Swallow or perhaps Heeney could be options if you don't want to downgrade all the way to a rookie, although I'd certainly consider doing so.

Good luck, I think your side is in pretty good shape.

I think any player over $400,000 selected in your team has to be seen as a Keeper.

Yeah Bont could come in for a Swan. Not particularly interested in Heppell, Titchell or similar.

I started with two donuts in 2013. They were Currie and McBean.

I think I started with two in 2014 as well. I think M King was one and I can't remember the other..

EDIT: Jayden Hunt was the other in 2014.

Good to see your side. Overall, you've gone very durable with your premium picks except for mainly Adams.

I like the forward keepers you've picked because I've got the same combo! I noticed you have historically been on the forward breakout candidate so was wondering whether you would be on Heeney.

I think with your structure you probably have gone one too deep in the defence although I like the pick of both KPDs, very reliable. The upshot is your onfield forward rookies are very shaky. We'll know more in the JLT games, but I'd prefer to see at least one $200k rookie at F5 to lower the risk. I don 't know where you get the cash from though. Maybe sacrifice one of your KPDs and pick up Swallow/Knight or a SYD mid down to Beams.

Thanks Ben. I've seen a few coaches with good records start with 2 donuts. Definitely high reward. Petracca was a good pick last year but I'm not sure we have one like him this year. No concessions for rnd 9 makes it a bit riskier if you already have a rnd 9 player. One of the bigger questions for me this year.

DEF: Docherty, Adams, Johannisen, McGrath, Scharenberg, Stewart (Ryan, Long)
MID: Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Bontempelli, Fyfe, T. Mitchell, Beams, Myers, Freeman (Powell-Pepper, Bolton, Graham)
RUC: Gawn, Goldstein (Strnadica)
FWD: Dahlhaus, Macrae, Roughead, McCluggage, Black, Pickett (Smith, Eddy)

Cash left: $87,700

Many of the rookies may just be placeholders for now. Chances are I will start just one or neither of McGrath/McCluggage.
Tom Mitchell in Hawthorn colours intrigues me. I still don't know how I feel about this.
Surely this is the season where Bont becomes a giant of Supercoach with Danger/Fyfe/Pendles.
Still unsure of the Beams pick.
Roughy pending round 1 fitness.
Have I gone too thin down back and up forward?

Hi all,
DEF: Docherty, Shaw, Rance, MHibberd, Berry, Newman (Stewart, Ryan)
MID: Dangerfield, Pendlebury, JPK, Fyfe, Beams, DSwallow, Foote, SPP ( Myers, Barrett, Freeman)
RUC: Gawn, Sandilands (Strnadica)
FWD: Dahlhaus, Macrae, Ryder, Roughead, Knight, Pickett (Rioli, Eddy)

$8,200 left over
My other scenario was instead of Docherty, MHibberd, and Knight, swap with 2 of Laird/Montagna/Adams, and ABlack thoughts??

Overall i seem set on this team the only thing i can point out is maybe possibly going to risky with players such as MHibberd, Beams, Swallow, Ryder, and Roughead coming back of injury and also a long absence from the game; also with Sandi and Fyfe but im set on these two

Thoughts on my team would be Great-
Defenders- Alex Rance, Taylor Adams, Rory Laird, Brodie Smith, Mathew Scarenberg, Luke Ryan, (Jarrod Berry, Kieran Collins)
Midfielders- Luke Parker, Rory Sloane, Nat Fyfe, Marc Murphy, Dayne Beams, Jaeger O'Meara, Andrew McGrath, David Myers, (Sam Powell-Pepper, Jarrod Pickett, Jack Graham)
Rucks- Max Gawn, Aaron Sandilands, (Braydon Preuss)
Forwards- Luke Dahlhaus, Josh Caddy, Isaac Smith, Isaac Heeney, Jarryd Roughead, Aaron Black, (Willie Rioli, Brett Eddy)
I'm thinking of swapping Sloane for the bont but not sure its worth it and got $96k in the bank not sure what to do with it.

Ok, a few suggestions.

Get rid of Brodie Smith, trust me just do it. Upgrade him to a more reliable player with a good track record of SC scoring or even downgrade him to a rookie and upgrade elsewhere.

Parker had off-season surgery so his pre-season has been limited. I would look to switch him for Danger who is a must have for our starting teams as he is the best possible captain option. I would also look to upgrade Sloane as I believe there are better options in the midfield. Pendles or JPK perhaps? I think going with one of Beams/Murphy is ok but both is too risky. Perhaps upgrade one of them. JOM won't play round 1 so either swap him for D Swallow or a rookie.

Your rucks are good.

I don't like the Isaac Smith pick. I would probably downgrade him to a rookie to afford the other players I suggested. Caddy is a calculated risk and I can see the appeal but not a risk I'm going to take.

Additional to what BB said, JOM isn't expected to play until Rd 4.
