Strong side. Caddy, Ryder and even Heeney have some question marks over their heads and for different reasons. I am looking at both Ryder and Heeney who have a lot of upside and seem very undervalued coming into the new season. Your best bet is to start working on the rookies. There are a few in your side that aren't going to feature early for their teams like Ahern (ACL injury), Battle (battling behind the three St Kilda forwards), Jarman, Guthrie and Hinge (rookie listed), and Freeman (just general soft tissue worries). I might even throw in Black into the unsure mix as he hasn't played senior footy for a while and KPP rookies don't general score as well as other players. A few rookies I have noted down while researching are

- Nic Newman (Swans) who will be 24 next season and I believe just signed a new 2-year deal despite not debuting yet. He is an attacking half back standing at 188cm. I have a general feeling that McVeigh will begin to be phased out of the side and Newman might be the first replacement.
- Jarrod Berry (Lions) with a team on the rebuild, he looks the perfect fit to feature early and often as a young, talented half back who has the mature body to play in the midfield and string a few games together. He was a captain for Vic Country I believe which demonstrates a leadership quality that Brisbane will be pleased to have down back. He has three very close mates in McCluggage, Cox and Witherden, so no homesickness.
- Luke Ryan (Freo) a VFL product who had the most intercept disposals in the league last season. A mature recruit that could feature round 1 as Freo begin to play more youth. I believe he plays off the half back and is in the mould of a slower JJ (because he is lightning quick).
- Tom Stewart (Cats) is a KPP recruited from the VFL but averaged the second most disposals for a key defender. This tells me that he enjoys finding the ball himself and running off his opponent. Geelong has an aging defense with Harry Taylor and Tom Lonergan.
- Other players of note are Foote, Brodie, Darcy Cameron, Eddy, Bolton, McCluggage, Bowes.
Cheers. Rookies just filling gaps atm

Heeney's disposals per game went up as the year wore on and with Tom Mitchell gone and Heeney coming into his third year he does appear to be on the rise. He's priced at 80 and F6 this year looks like D6 most other years so a 90 average from him wouldn't be the reason you lose supercoach. MacRae's disposals went up this year but he had less kicks, less tackles and less contested possessions so it appears on the surface that he spent less time in the engine room. I don't think MacRae is a bad pick but he and Heeney look to me like they could give you a similar return.
Yes, I believe Macrae played more inside in 2015 because Libba was injured (from Row's thread from this time last year, well worth a look in cross-checking selections)

I had been thinking it might be Heeney vs Ryder for my side (for value picks at a similar price), but perhaps it's Heeney vs Macrae. From memory you and I were both active in the Predictions thread, which is how I built my side last year. If I think Heeney can get close to the 6th best forward as round one approaches, he may get a run.

Separately, your spreadsheet is getting rave reviews, so if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to take a look please.

I must say that I'm a little envious seeing all the posted teams and talk on structure, strategies, etc...and there's still another 2 weeks until Christmas!

Great to see some familiar names coming back to our forums...footy must be just around the corner.

To Darkie & Co. - Tremendous efforts and details in your responses, just goes to show what a great culture we've cultivated...MASSIVE thanks and gratitudes!

As was the case last season, I think there will be a need to have a lot of the 150-200k rookies in our sides. Can see a heap of them that stand out already. There is always a super cheap crop that pops out but I think we need to budget for them now if we want a realistic sense of how our final teams might look!

First proper draft! (thanks to freo's spreadsheet)

Doch, Shaw, Adams, McGrath, Scharenberg, Berry (Newman, Ryan)
Danger, Pendles, Bont, Fyfe, Beams, D.Swallow, Foote, Myers (SPP, Barrett, Freeman)
Goldy, Sandi (Strndica)
Dahl, Macrae, Heeney, Bennell, Roughy, Pickett (Balic, Eddy)

Bank $40k

Bennell and Roughy too much value to ignore in a forward line where the obvious options are thin but carry obvious risks. My strategy might involve offloading one or both of these players during the bye to avoid donuts.
Love the Swallow selection mate. Has been in my team since the day after the 2016 season finished :p

Not concerned with Bennell's recent injury concerns/off-field issues?

Wow that's a deep midifeld. The best side I've seen yet I reckon
My only concerns sit with Hartlett and potentially KK, but with KK I think there's enough upside to him. If Bob Murphy has a strong preseason and goes alright in the practice matches, then I'd be inclined to slot him in for Hartlett.

Actually surprised that side is under the salary cap.

Don't usually post my team in pre-season talks but it'll probably change countless times in the next few months so why not

DEFENCE - Rance, Adams, Laird, Scharenberg, Berry, Newman (Ryan, Stewart)
MIDFIELD - Dangerfield, Selwood, Treloar, Rockliff, Fyfe, Beams, Foote, Powell-Pepper (Myers, Barrett, Graham)
RUC - Gawn, Sandilands (Strnadica)
FORWARDS - Dahlhaus, Macrae, Heeney, Ryder, McCluggage, Pickett (Bolton, Eddy)

25k remaining. Tried to pick a few higher rookies in case i needed the extra money elsewhere later on. I've picked a few injury prone players in Adams, Fyfe, Rocky, Beams and Sandilands. May need to remove 1 or 2 of them. Thoughts on team?

At this stage I think structure wise this team is in good shape.

A long as you can get 3 decent rookies with out having to pick Mcgrath, then i think you will be right. Rockcliff, Fyfe Beams all returning from injury, but all 3 under-priced.

Not much more to be done for now, maybe if you needed to find a little cash and you weren't totally bullish on Gawn, maybe Goldy instead and free up some cash for more expensive rookies.

Not a fan of McGrath Deeman?
No, I think if he plays he should be a good option and is in my current team.

The point I was trying to make was that the team didn't have McGrath, and if the lower priced rookies don't get up, he may have to find some cash top get McGrath in.

Just got on SC and tried to make this side, knew it was going to be pushing the salary cap, and it certainly was. It's just under $50k over the cap!!!!

However, if Goldy is the RUC instead of Gawn it fits inside the cap by $11,000

Swallow at M6 seems to provide good balance.

No doubt that there are concerns with Bennell's calves so putting him in RMTs is a bit premature but I'll hope he gets himself right in 2 months to get up for a preseason game. If he plays just one and lines up Round 1 I'll probably take the punt.

I really rate his scoring potential and think he could be the no.1 averaging fwd. A little bit like Wells last year, I'm hoping he can get his body right at least until the byes (or at worst until Round 10) with some high scores to get up to $500k and allow a side swap to T.Lynch/Buddy if there are signs of an injury (like Wells) or potentially just hold as a keeper. Just $70k more than JOM, available in the fwd line and could finish in the top bracket in his position. A sadistic part me is happy that there are some injury concerns as otherwise he'd be a lot more popular.

Who are you thinking of sven?

I appreciate that our rookies will likely change, but if there are some key ones we should be planning around from a price perspective, perhaps we should put them in the picker and do similarly in relation to the byes.

That's an outstanding midfield, but I think it's usually better to have a team that is more balanced.

I'd look at dropping your least favourite premium mid (for many I suspect that would be Gaz) and using the cash to strengthen your forward or back lines.

If you're open to it, you could even downgrade Danger all the way to a rookie, and potentially get another keeper in both your def and fwd lines.

Mainly the fwd line ones we'll have to monitor I think. The ones <250k such as Anderson (238k), Lovell (230k), Hoskin-Elliot (217k), McCarthy (203k), McClugage (202k), R.Knight (201k), Ainsworth (198k), J.Thomas (193k), Bowes (171k), J.Stewart (170k), Simpkin (162k)

Thanks Bomber, that's a pretty deep list.

If too many of them end up looking the goods, I'll potentially pick one or more in the mids, and/or consider trimming a forward keeper.

Good to see most are from teams in rebuild mode.

Part of the reason my current set up is:
Def: 6-0-2
Mid: 4-0-7
Ruck: 1-1-1
Fwd: 2-0-6
