Keith - I like the look of that structure and I think many coach will be adopting the GnR approach this year, plenty of 'blue chip' material there too...but I'd also like to see a bit of 'gold'.

A couple of things which stood out for me: McGovern & Montagna, over say a Yeo & Deledio combination...you no doubt have your reasons.

I currently have 9 of those 15 FWIW.
Hey Thanh,

I liked what Rowan had to say about McGovern in his analysis. Montagna always been a favourite of mine, very consistent mid.

F - Deledio Martin Barlow Franklin Rx4

Purest GnR setup I have seen this pre-season thus far. Very expensive defence. Deledio and Shaw will both be available much cheaper at some point.

Do you plan on using Lobbe as a stepping stone to Goldy? I really like the POD pick in Sandilands, but at the same time I would recommend downgrading either a defender or a forward to start Goldy instead.

Or even Deledio to Leuey as ruck cover (I respect that many don't have faith in Leuey), a defender down to a rookie, then welcome Goldy plus Crouch/JOM? Most midfields I have seen this year have been 4-2-5 and I have always been wary of starting with one mid less than most teams, even though it's probably perfectly fine.

These are all just suggestions, and what I would do if it was my team, but it's not. Otherwise, great job on a very nice looking team early on.

I have been switching between Martin and Lobbe at R2 for the past few days, but I have finally decided that by starting Lobbe there and downgrading Deledio to Franklin, I can change Yeo to Simpson and Selwood to Fyfe while still keeping Bird and Leuenberger at F4/5.

D: McVeigh, Simpson, Bartel, Smith, MW Brown, Bonner (Hibberd, Hartley)
M: Fyfe, Pendles, Ablett, Rockliff, Libba, Crouch, Freeman, Cuningham (Sumner, Morabito, Keays/Mathieson)
R: Goldstein, Lobbe (Read)
F: Martin, Barlow, Franklin, Bird, Leuenberger, Petracca (Kerridge, Adams)

Cash left: 72,700

Please pick my team apart, what would you change?

Valid points, they may not stay. Both only went back in today.

Yes, definitely planning a Lobbe to Goldy trade. As you say, Goldstein is reachable from Sandi if I downgraded one of Shaw, Boyd or Deledio.

Yeah until yesterday I had Wines at M5 and Libba at M6. Not keen on Crouch or JOM atm, but that could change, particularly in Crouch's case. I'm not keen on ruck cover at all, I play the risky game in that sense, and burn the trade if I run in to trouble early (season ender or LTI) at R1 or R2. It's one way to attempt to win 50k. Cheers for your input!

I like this team, I recently had Bartel and Smith and may go back to them. I see why you've made all the selections you have. To be honest I wouldn't change anything, except Leuenberger for Tippett. I don't trust Leuey at all. Since you need an extra 100k on top of what you have free to get him, I would switch Crouch out for a 120k rookie. That way, if you weren't keen on Smith given what you end up seeing in the NAB, he could become any other defender 500k or less.

But of course, you'd have your reasons for Leuey, and if it works you've saved yourself some $$$ and have a handy stash for rookie correction/s or your first upgrade.

Thanks Kakarot! Leuey for me is a wait and see. I think I am content to sit with this team for now because if Leuey isn't 100% by round 1 I can downgrade him to a rookie and I'll have plenty of places to spend the cash, either Buddy to Lids, Lobbe to S. Martin or Crouch to a premo. Your comments really helped.

Defense: Everyone has their own opinion, our defences contrast greatly, as I have picked young, low 400k defenders with likely improvements coming into next season. Nonetheless, I can see your defense scoring very well, durability might be a slight issue.

Midfield: I prefer a firing dangerfield over an injured Fyfe, but it's no big deal. We both have Pendles, Ablett, Rockliff, Libba, so that leaves Crouch. I would rather find some cash elsewhere and upgrade him to a Wines/Selwood/Treloar.

Ruck: Very good

Forward: Don't like Franklin, Bird, Leunburger, think there're better options, but I haven't fully looked into them.

The latest squad (team #16 haha) all in the note pad.
Thought I'd share. The Essendon debacle has opened up some rookie players for us.

J McVeigh, R Laird, J Bartel, B Smith, MW Brown, M Hartley.
(C Byrne, J Wagner.)

S Pendlebury, G Ablett, T Rockliff, O Wines, T Liberatore, B Crouch, J Trengove, J Gresham.
(B Fiorini, S Kerridge, R Maitheson.)

S Martin, M Lobbe. (M King.)

B Deledio, D Martin, L Dahlhaus, M Barlow, B Kennedy, C Petracca.
(N Kommer, A Tipungwuti.)

15.5k remaining.
Thoughts welcomed on this team.
Mainly a guns and rookies team with 3 mid prices thrown in.

Liberatore - A must have and counted as a keeper.
B Crouch - The jury still out on him. Will have to make a late call here.
Lobbe - A lock for me now at R2. A sole ruck at 389k is too hard to knock back. In a perfect scenario, Goldy drops 100k and Lobbe gains 100k. Fingers crossed.

Really balance looking team there mate and I do like the Laird & Dahlhaus picks. I think you can comfortably sit on that until the NAB and assess if necessary.

Just a few observations/comments from me for now:

* Just monitor McVeigh injury progress and sees whether he plays a part in the NAB matches, likewise for BCrouch.
* I'm starting to come around to Lobbe myself and will watch him with a keen interest, anything like the 2014 version and he's LOCK.
* I like Deledio but Montagna DPP interest me more, one will most likely start for my team.
* Dahlhaus is an interesting pick as he's in the mix along with Bennell & Wingard for me, be interested to know your reason?

I may downgrade Yeo in defence so that I can upgrade Crouch into Selwood/Shiel...

I am quite set on the Bird Berger, even though one or both of them could prove bad picks. I am backing them both in unless NAB makes me change my mind. Might be nice to turn Franklin into Lids somehow.

Teams at this early stage of the season will be aligned with the coaches intended structure, favourite players, perceived value selections & 'risk v reward' strategy. Our answers to those questions will more than likely determine the makeup of players we have in our team.

In saying that, you have the makeup of possibly a very good starting base for your starting team, I wouldn't pick it apart too much. To my eyes, you have 5 'risk v reward' type players. For me that's a tad too many but maybe not so for those that likes to play this strategy. One suggestion I would make is have you consider switching Goldy to Martin and see whether the funds can help to eliminate one of those 'risk v reward' type player?

Noted, given his tendency to miss games. Could becomes Bartel + 90k. Did see he finished your mountain bike challenge first place, so fit and firing atm?
He will score very well as a defender this year but will miss games. Watch out if Bulldogs travel to WA, Northern Territory (Darwin home games?), and Queensland.

Does anyone disagree with this?

Martin (110-115) + Bird (85-100) + Crouch (90-105) = 285-320 ~ 1 keeper + M8/9 keeper + F5-7 keeper

Lobbe (85-100) + Bird (85-100) + Wines (100-110) = 270-310 ~ 1 keeper + F5-7 keeper

Martin (110-115) Rookie (50-75) + Shiel (105-115) = 265-305 ~ 2 keepers

Trying to upgrade Crouch to a more reliable option. I feel Bird will be outstanding value this season, however Martin at R2 is a safer pick than Bird at F4. A set and forget ruck strategy could prove a POD, considering the popularity of Lobbe in the past week. Also, I feel Shiel will have a higher output than Wines as a POD midfielder. The rookie in the third combination of course has the benefit of cash generation.

Tamuhawk's latest team:

D: Bartel, Yeo, Rich, Smith, Byrne, Brown, (Hartley, Hanley)
M: Pendles, Ablett, JPK, Rocky, Libba, Freeman, Mathieson, Keays (Long, Redman, Davis)
R: Goldy, Martin (Wyatt)
F: Montagna, Dusty, Dahlhaus, Barlow, Leuenberger, Petracca (Kommer, McDonald-Tipungwuti)

Cash left: $17,600

Gone with 14 keepers and 2 midpricers in Libba & Leuey.

DEF: Went very light in defence with 3 speculative picks in Yeo, Rich & Smith which isn't ideal but if I were to go risky, this would be the line to do so. Had Yeo & Smith for most of last year and told myself I wouldn't go there again... but their value is too good to miss out on if they fire!

MID: Pendles, GAJ, Rocky & Libba seem to be the stock standard picks. I have a love for JPK so he is a must!

RUC: I had a horrible time starting a cheapish ruck in Maric last year which was a rollercoaster ride I do not want to go on again, I am opting to do the set and forget combo of Goldy & Stef.

FWD: Gonna go strong in this line and go for 4 proven guns. Hoping berger can become decent ruckcover like stef martin & max gawn of recent years and not Hale & Bellchambers.

Not a lot of cash left to play with, if I have to I would downgrade one of Barlow/Leuey and maybe strengthen my defence and add a McVeigh or Simpson if need be but atm pretty happy with this side.

GnR 14-16

It's of course very unlikely that this would be my final team but it's what I'd like to have right now. i'd feel very confident going in with those 14 premos each week at the start of the year.

This time of year I like to settle on what I would like to have which is Guns and Rookies with my personal preferences of players and then let the rookies decide through the NAB if I'm going to need to change. I think there is a good chance that there are more quality rookies coming out of the forward line this year. I may even consider going in with only 2 200k plus players in the Fwd line. I really don't what to have to spend coin on more than 3 defenders so I hope the rookies come up - the Bombers saga should help this possibility with Francis, Brown and Hartley all a chance.

Which super premo's not to take - this is always one of the biggest opening selection issues. Which super premo will I upgrade to and which will I leave behind. My risk with this team is going the Danger/Treloar combo over Selwood/Pendles. I want them all in my team eventually but early in the year this decision will be big in dictating where I am compared to the pack.

No midpricers - this year seems to once again be the year of the midpricer with Leuy, Lobbe, Bird, Libba, Crouch etc etc etc. Going no mid pricers means I hope my last picked premo's of Barlow, Simpson and Wines outscore the cheaper equivalents like Bird, Crouch and Libba by enough to counter the extra rookie on field. I still think this is the way to go as long as you nail the right rookie selections, If Libba, Crouch or O'Meara look to be flying in the NAB I may get cold feet and pick one though as you also can't look a gift horse in the mouth in this game either - think Sandi at under 300k a few years ago!

OK I'm done with team tinkering for now until NAB - will focus on building up my watchlist and reviewing fixtures and byes a bit more closely.

Random thoughts.....

Byes will be different this year as they are so late. We will be entering them with teams that are much more upgraded. People who pioneer this strategy the best will get a big ranking boost. I can sense some big moves trading in/out guns happening.

I think North and Port are in for big years so will be taking a closer look at their players I think....giants looking like they are building too - very tempted by Mumford! other player thoughts right now are that I have no hawks in my team even though they will likely win a lot of games....Roughy is interesting I think he could have a big big year. I'm also interested in Suckling at the dogs if he plays wing/forward - that guy can kick goals and could average over 90 I think...the crows like to play first round picks reasonably early ( not that we have had many!) and Milera looks ready and hasn't put a foot wrong

my attempt at a gnr i dont usually like doing them but this year i think im going to have to thanks to essendon

shaw,mcveigh,laird,francis,byrne,adams hartley and brown

dangerfield,pendlebury,ablett,selwood,shiel,prestia,rockliff,parish hopper,keays and gore

nicholls and lobbe wyatt

martin,christensen,lyons,anderson,kerridge,petracca eades and tipungwuti

STACKED midfield obviously but all apart from danger underpriced

forwards only really like martin and christensen and with so many cheap guys there i can afford to do it

to many essendon guys is a concern but j/s is key

I've only had 4 players locked all preseason. Ablett, Rockliff, Wines & Kerridge. I can probably add Essendon's Mitch Brown after Tuesday's news. Every other player seems to be overpriced, too old or unproven! I need the preseason games to start so I can be more definitive with my bad decisions. Might use the auto fill! Probably still give me Yeo, Smith, Malceski, Libba, Crouch, JOM, Lobbe, Leuey, Bennell, Zerrett, Bird, Wells and Lyon.

I must be missing something, put together a side of 13-14 keepers that I am pleased with at the minute, with rookie wonderland to come.

'Probably still give me Yeo, Smith, Malceski, Libba, Crouch, JOM, Lobbe, Leuey, Bennell, Zerrett, Bird, Wells and Lyon.'

All of the above are risky, have two of them at the moment, is enough for me.
