What do people think of Petrie? or even Petrie over Dusty? If the Kangas have that one ruck policy and want to rest goldy more, petrie could play more time in the ruck. Not happy if dusty plays off the half back instead of midfield.

I like Petrie as a POD and I'll be picking him up soon after his bye. Not a bad player to choose over Dusty, but I'd still hold off on your decision as I think it's a bit too soon to judge him after one NAB cup game and I think the role is just to get him back into the game when he fades out. Also keep on mind that he did pick up the most touches of any Tiger on Friday so not much to worry about there IMO.

Agree with Nk, after the bye when North's draw improves would be the time to grab him. Boomer too!

Never took much notice last year but did he handle a tag? If he does play quarter back style off half back he might be the target of a hard forward tag. Interested to know if he has been in that hard tag situation before.

This is a very interesting point that I hadn't really considered until looking at your post.

Forward tags seem to really drag down a defenders score much more than a regular midfield tag (see Birchall, HShaw of recent years). With no 'tagger experience' this has actually got me reconsidering selecting him.

In my opinion, with no stats at all to back me up, Dustin does seem to be the type who would more or less 'give up' if he was targeted by a forward tag.

EDIT: Just had a really quick look at some previous years scores from fanfooty and at first glance looks like he's been tagged a few times:
2012 Round 12 - tagged by Bugg - 99SC
2012 Round 10 - tagged by Ray - 91SC
2012 - Round 1 - tagged by Carazzo - 89SC
2011 - Round 7 - tagged by DeBoer - 65SC

Make of that what you will.

If he was getting tagged in a game wouldn't Hardwick move him forward again?

Still no one fully locked but I like the look of Swallow, Hurn, Sandilands, Pav, Beams, Pendles, GAJ, Mitchell, Ryder and most of the rookies already mentioned plus Xavier Ellis. Some of these guys already in the team but good to see them fit and firing on TV to make my choices feel a little safer.

I recall last season it all seemed "too hard" for Martin when Tuohy was on him in a game against us, plus another game when Armfield was on him he was done for the day. They were not tags, so much, but seeing them on him, he looked well beaten and did not seem to have the mental strength you hope a really good player has. His up games he seems to score well enough if you guys are willing to ride his rollercoaster ways.

One of them games it came out that he wasn't signing a contract. So he had a bit on that week. The other was a final where you run over the top of us so everyone was down. Must have this year, will be consistent and a gun player.

Hi Johno, I agree he is a must have, but curious if you mean he is a must have starter or just that you have to get him at some stage as he will be a top 6 forward by the end of the year? His bye does make things a bit difficult as it would be another premium in the team out alongside GAJ, Pendles, Beams and Danger (provided you are starting those 4 of course)

Polec looked very good, very classy with a great kick on him.
That should include and NOT playing for Brisbane :)

Had him from the start, great value considering the price of top end rookies this year.

As has been mentioned on a podcast (can't remember whether it was Jock or SCC) the forwards have some slightly better rules this year in marking contests. It was alluded to that Cloke and Petrie, big body players, would benefit from the rules. Hence Geelong double teamed him and let Jesse kick a few easy ones.

It will be interesting to see what sort of scores the traditional FF will be able to get.

Nice discussion on Martin!

I would love to start with him, but having the Round 8 bye makes it seem like it would make more sense to trade him in after his BYE. Also considering he has Melbourne and GWS right after his bye!

Having said that he could easily average 105 til the bye which would really punish those without him.

It's a tough one....

At the moment, I'm thinking to roll the dice and start without him, and hope he gets tagged by Carlton/has a few lower games to lower his price. :p

He's a must have by seasons end!

Like being held to 25pts by Zac Tuohy? :D

He scored 85, 25 and 69 in his three games against Carlton last season.

Will be interesting to watch Martin in the first four games of the year. He plays the Suns, Carlton, Bulldogs and Collingwood. He loves the Bulldogs with an ave over the past 3 years of 116. The other teams are a different story. He only averages 71 against Carlton and 86 against the Pies. His ave without the Bulldogs games in the past 3 years in combined 12 games against Suns, Blues and Pies is 79.5. Lots of players have bogie teams (and Carlton is definitely his) so I wonder if he drops a fair bit in price. Could be a good pick up after rd 4 as long term I think he is a definite upgrade target.

Now having said that he will come out and smash it and have an ave of 120 after rd 4:D
