Crows likely to appeal :-

Clubs are rising up against the MRO’s crackdown on sling tackles with three appeals lodged from the weekend’s rounds.

There is growing angst around the league about match review officer Michael Christian’s willingness to hand out one-week suspensions with four players nabbed this round, the latest being Adelaide star Rory Laird.

Laird, who was best-on-ground in Sunday’s win over Brisbane, is the 20th player this season to be suspended for a dumping tackle.

He was pinged for driving Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale into the turf in the third quarter.

Carlton, Sydney and Fremantle will roll the dice at the tribunal on Tuesday night, appealing Christian’s classification of a hard tackle.

The Crows are also likely to appeal with a final call to be made on Tuesday morning

The pool for the Brownlow is rapidly decreasing ....

- just a matter of time before most top line contested players that tackle are suspended ...

This needs rapid addressing ...

I can see the case where there is malice and intent shown ... like a slam tackle etc ..

But by christ these players can be moving very fast, twisting and carrying momentum that contributes to the outcome (on both sides) ... what are they supposed to do in a split second ...

Kinda takes away from the point of being best and fairest. Think they should make the borderline dangerous tackle penalties heavy fines to hit player’s hip pockets though for first offences. If they’re repeat offenders, they can have multiple games. Might make it a little less ruthless for Brownlow contenders.

This could get interesting ... IMO the players / clubs need to take this one on ...

- unlike the JVR case ... they can't say he was a "rookie" BS and didn't take due care like an "experienced" player would have ...

Laird is an "experienced" player that didn't slam him into the ground and thus took due care of the player he was tackling ...

- but ... he could have if he wanted too ...

Agree .. this aint Touch Football / Netball ... the game has tackling involved ...

Most have no malice in them but if you make 10+ tackles in a game these days the odds of being suspended has now become ridiculous ...

I'm actually interested to know if there has been much research done on this from an AFL perspective, or if it is all from other sports. I know it has been researched in other sports (notably NFL), where the expected impacts are different, but haven't seen anything specific to AFL.

Not expecting there would be a lot of difference in the results, but NFL impacts (where a lot of research has been done) are more often helmet to helmet, AFL is more often body/ground to head contact and different impact angles. Obviously different helmet types in the two sports too.

Well obviously Laird should have paused time mid tackle, checked on Neale from 3 different camera angles like the MRO, and asked if his arms were free and if he thought he would be ok if he was to continue the tackle. He then should have got Lachie to sign a stat dec confirming the agreement, then either continued the tackle or gently placed Lachie on the ground depending on the aforementioned agreement.

It's becoming a farce, in just about all of these suspensions no opposition players come in to remonstrate, which says to me that there's nothing in it. I understand duty of care, but the appeal of the game both playing and watching is its physicality, it's not like that's a secret and if you are worried about injury then quite simply don't play.

My wife and daughter are netball mad, and I've been to a few national and international games, those ladies go bloody hard at the ball and I'm convinced that pretty soon the afl wont be much different the way it's heading... ie contest the ball but once someone has it you can't tackle and there will be some limit on how long you can hold the ball...

AFL is becoming hard for me to watch, maybe I'm just an angry middle aged Eagles supporter, or maybe i really don't like where the game is heading. Mods feel free to move this to the rant thread :mad::mad::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
