I think you’re right in that there is upside to the proportion of #1s that have achieved an AA guernsey in the fullness of time, but if that is the case, it would also be true of the #2s and 3s.

Since 2006 I believe it looks like this (#1 player and number of AAs vs #2 and 3 players and number of AAs)

2006 Gibbs 0 vs Gumbleton 0 + Hansen 0
2007 Kreuzer 0 vs Cotchin 1 + Masten 0
2008 Watts 0 vs NicNat 3 + S Hill 0
2009 Scully 0 vs Trengove 0 + Dusty 4
2010 Swallow 0 vs Bennell 0 + S Day 0
2011 Patton 0 vs Cogs 0 + Tyson 0
2012 Whitfield 1 vs O’Rourke 0 + Plowman 0
2013 Boyd 0 vs J Kelly 1 + Mills 0
2014 P McCartin 0 vs Trac 4 + Angus Brayshaw 0
2015 Weitering 0 vs Schache 0 + Billings 0
2016 McGrath 0 vs Taranto 0 + Clug 0
2017 Rayner 0 vs Andrew Brayshaw 1 + Dow 0
2018 Walsh 1 vs Lukosius 0 + Rankine 0
2019 Rowell 0 vs Anderson 0 + L Jackson 0
2020 JUH 0 vs Thilthorpe 0 + Phillips 0
2021 JHF 0 vs Sam Darcy 0 + Callaghan 0
2022 Cadman 0 vs Ashcroft 0 + Sheezel 0

#1s 2 guernseys
#2s 10 guernseys
#3s 5 guernseys

So the #1s are well and truly covered by the 2s and 3s (2 guernseys vs 15 combined). Even the #3s alone have the #1s well covered (2 vs 5), albeit Dusty contributed 4 of those!

One thing that I think is striking is that even the two “successful” #1 picks have “only” earned one guernsey each. There have been no multiple representatives to date.

In terms of #2s and 3s that would have a good chance at earning an AA guernsey at some point, the names would probably include Clug, Anderson, Jackson, Ashcroft, Sheezel and arguably others. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trac or Andrew Brayshaw in there again, which would boost the 2s and 3s tally.

Interestingly, here’s the performance of a select few #5s - admittedly a couple of them outside of the 2006+ era 😋

2004 Franklin 8
2005 Pendlebury 7
2006 Boak 3

Any of those 3 currently has the whole of the 2006-22 cohort of #1 picks covered 😱

If WC can get anywhere near pick 2 and 3 for pick 1, they should take it and run!
I love this analysis.

The Gold Coast SUNS have re-signed six players for the 2024 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
SUNS Academy trio Bodhi Uwland, Lloyd Johnston and Sandy Brock are joined by Levi Casboult, James Tsitas and Oskar Faulkhead in receiving contract extensions for next season.
Gold Coaster Uwland and the Northern Territory product Johnston both made their AFL debuts in 2023 and have been rewarded for their consistent seasons.
Casboult has played two seasons with the club and proven to be a reliable addition to the forward-line, while Tsitas has provided excellent leadership through the VFL program and contributed at AFL level.
Territorian Brock and 2022 mid-season draftee Faulkhead are both yet to debut, but were consistent performers and continued to develop in the SUNS’ 2023 VFL Premiership season.
GC SUNS General Manager of Player Talent & Strategy Craig Cameron said the six players had earned their opportunities for next season.
“We’re thrilled to extend these players and have them locked into our squad for next season,” Cameron said.
“We’ve invested significantly in our SUNS Academy over the years so it’s fantastic to see this investment paying off with three Academy products extended for another season.
“All six players were extremely important to our squad for different reasons this year and we expect their experiences will hold them in good stead for 2024.”
The AFL Delisted Free Agency Period opens on Wednesday November 1 where the club is able to add to its list until Friday November 10.

PORT Adelaide ruckman Scott Lycett has indicated he plans to retire and Orazio Fantasia has also left the Power among four further list changes at the club.

Lycett, a premiership player with West Coast in 2018, played 146 games for the Eagles and Port, but has been hampered by injuries in recent seasons.

The 31-year-old has played just 18 times across the past two years and the Power said he had indicated to the club he would retire, amid interest from Victorian sides.

"Scott has been an outstanding contributor for two clubs across his 146 games, including as a premiership player at West Coast," Port coach Ken Hinkley said.

"He was an incredible workhorse for our club during the last five seasons and was totally focused on putting his teammates first. As a former Port Adelaide junior, Scott was Port Adelaide through and through and we thank him for his passion and commitment to our club.

"We congratulate Scott on a great career and we will look for an opportunity next year to acknowledge and celebrate his career more formally."

Fantasia, 28, was offered a contract by Port but has decided to leave, with the forward set to join Carlton.

Another ruckman, Sam Hayes, has been delisted, while Jake Pasini has also been axed despite having a year left to run on his contract.

"We also thank Orazio, Sam and Jake for their various contributions to our club," Port list manager Jason Cripps said.

Fantasia was limited to just 19 games across three seasons at Port, Hayes played 11 times and Pasini did not make his AFL debut.

Tom Jonas has already retired, while Nathan Barkla, Riley Bonner, Trent Dumont and Brynn Teakle were listed by Port.

It was also a busy Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period for the Power, with Xavier Duursma traded to Essendon as Esava Ratugolea, Ivan Soldo, Jordon Sweet and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher arrived.

I know Reid is a generational talent according to all and Sundry but riddle me this what would happen if Nth kept 2&3?
WC will only trade pick 1 if it can guarantee it can get Dan Curtain.

With McKay gone how about Nth using pick 3 (will be 4) compo bid to draft Curtain? Need to shore up backline and won't be there if trade with WC.

So it would take Duusma (fwd / mid) and Curtain shoring up both ends of the ground.

Could then grab a mid at 19ish George Stevens maybe.

Midfield would be LDU, Wardlaw, Simpson, Steven, Sheezel could have a run on ball and Tarrant to name a few.

Have Duusma fwd (also run through mids), Curtain back.

2024 draft midfielder draft as well with Nth to have top 5 pick.

Food for thought.

I haven't checked into this but it occurred to me that with the exception of Adams and perhaps Shultz all other trades played in the magoos during 2023.

Talk about a spare parts trade period. Where was the big name? MIA this year. Smith would have been a beauty.
I believe there were only four traded players that didn’t play in the twos last season, with McKay and Zerk-Thatcher being the others. Lots of moves by players to access better opportunities.

Yes, I remember Nankervis was the 4th choice ruck option behind Tippett, Reid, and Naismith. If I'm correct, Nankervis is the only premiership player out of the lot. As Jack Sparrow would say, 'it's a funny ol' world, innit?'
Lachie Neale #58.
Andrew McLeod #48
Dane Swan #58

Allways a uncut diamond hiding.

Pies need a Ruck for the future.....Edwards or Sanders #19

Midfield, like the prospect George Stevens #33 should still be available, could be the diamond every club hopes to jag.

Don't think Stevens will still be on the board at pick 33. Good inside mid though.
