so if it is Khawaja , Smith , Labuschagne , Green , Head , Marsh who is the spare bat ?

Bancroft on the outer , so is it Harris or Renshaw or X

Khawaja might end up after next summer's India series so then which way do they go then ?

Smudge ends up after the following summer's home Ashes

Are they waiting (hoping) Pucovski gets everything right

Renshaw's 2023-24 Shield record is 348 runs at 31.6 and 1 century

Bancroft was last year's leading Shield runs scorer with 945 at an average of 59.06 with four hundreds, and also sits atop the most prolific domestic batters this season with 512 at 56.9 with 2 centuries from his nine innings.

Looks like his papers have been stamped because of his comments about the NSW bowling cartel over sandpaper gate because on pure numbers over the last 2 shield seasons he should be in the squad over Renshaw.

Totally agree , may as well do away with the Sheffield Shield if they are not going to reward performance.

Apparently Renshaw is being "groomed" to take Khawaja's position.

Smudge must be going to open for the next 5 years and by then Dixon or Konstas might be ready.

Just replace Warner with the opener now (Bancroft , Harris , Renshaw) and Green bides his time (like many others in the 80's and 90's had to) or waits for Bison's body to let him down again.

CONFIRMED AUSTRALIA TEST SQUAD

Pat Cummins (c) (30), Steve Smith (34), Usman Khawaja (37), Marnus Labuschagne (29), Cameron Green (24), Travis Head (30), Mitch Marsh (32), Alex Carey (32), Mitchell Starc (33), Nathan Lyon (36), Josh Hazlewood (33), Scott Boland (34), Matt Renshaw (27).
Mentioned it before, but there's a bit of a lack of young talent getting games in this country. I know they will have to be given chances eventually, with the age of the rest of the squad, but there will need to be significant changes over the next few years - very few under 30. Hopefully they can spread the retirements out a bit and the replacements over time rather than all at once.

I think there is (could be) enough around , they just need to start performing consistently at Shield level , then we need to start having more and more "A' series

Openers we have a few in Bancroft , Harris and Renshaw oh wait

Years ago Doran and J Sangha were described as once in a generation talents

Hardie is 25y 3d

Jack Clayton 24y 319d

McSweeney is 24y 308d

Ollie Davies is having a reasonable Shield season 23y 88d

Kellaway 21y 70d needs to start punching out runs

Wyllie 19y 261d needs to start punching out runs

They are just some names I have been tracking the last few seasons , I don't follow the second XI games at all so hopefully their are a few more coming through

But you are right some big changes coming up in the next 24 months , Warner gone , then Khawaja , Smudge

I guess they would have been hoping Pucovski would not have had all his issues and could have cemented a spot now along with Green

I still remember guys making 1000 + Shield runs a season then going to play County cricket and not getting in the Test team , times have certainly changed

@Herbie66

Stuart Law springs to mind

367 First class games/ 601 innings - scored 27080 runs at an average of 50.52.

Played County Cricket for both Essex and Lancashire, passed 1000 runs every English season from 1999-2003 before getting injured in 2004.

He played just 1 test match... poor guy

All about timing, very strong batting line up in his era with the Waugh brothers, Ponting, Bevan, Slater, Taylor etc

Check out Jamie Siddons

Cox , Di Venuto , Maher etc etc

Even guys like Hayden , Langer , Lehmann , Martyn (didn't help himself telling AB where to go) etc etc had to wait their time for more chances

Probably missing a few as well

Something in my mind tells me Siddons got selected for another tour where he probably would have debuted but it got cancelled last minute , played one ODI in Pakistan 1988/89
