It will be interesting what the optimal strategy ends up being, I'm not sure the points loss will be as extravagant as people are making out by carrying Round 0 premiums, not in best 18 rounds where you'll likely be fielding a mid pricer for the premium in the vast majority of situations and not having to find 600k+ to fork out in the first quarter of the season for any genuine premium that you pass on.

You would also have the upper hand to get on the next target at a favourable price whilst other coaches are scrambling to bring in a guy you already own, very interesting season ahead I feel.

For all the moaning of extra trades I think there will actually be multiple ways for people to play the game this year.
In reality, the 'points lost' from owning a bye player hinges on the rookie who comes into the 18 best scorers. If Mannagh, Wilson, Conway, Sharp, Coffield types can produce 70-90 in the weeks Gawn/ Grundy/ Daicos/ Walsh/ Touk/ Green have their byes, then it increases their appeal. If we get Chesser or Cowan in 2023 type scoring, it might hurt more

@Burly I couldn’t agree more! If their replacement scores an 80 and the selection ends up averaging 5+ more points than the non bye player you’d be picking instead then you’ll be miles in front.
It’ll come down to a bit of luck at the end of the day but I know most rookies that end up on my bench in the early rounds are scoring 40-50 rather than 70-80 most weeks!

I wouldnt call it a proper strategy, but have found myself basing my early-days squad around the 2021 draft class.
So far I have included..
1 - Horne-Francis, 2 Darcy, 3 Callaghan, 6 Rachele, 9 Gibcus, 26 MacDonald & 33 Owens
Daicos (how did he slide to #4???) is the obvious missing link, but (all going well) I will look to bring him in after his R5 bye & his R4 date with Maguiness

I have about $55K left over.
Obviously I am banking on Sweet getting the nod over Soldo at Port, but I've watched him with my team (Doggies) and think he may be the better of the two. If it doesnt pan out that way I'll probably go with Xerri instead, so will need to compromise somewhere else.

I'm going with the plan to limit my exposure to OR premos and accordingly think I will field a pretty strong best-18 in those early byes.

I might have invented a new word 😀

Played a National Indoor Soccer Championship in Moe many , many years ago , nice Chinese restaurant from memory.

Exactly right.

Probably could have used 8 x $ 102k priced bench players and said wow "look at my side" and as unrealistic as can be.

Cheaper rookies (will) appear probably gives me another $ 200-300k to play with for Round 1 so be able to easily make adjustments.

Happy with those premiums for this time of the year.
No Larry or Curley , dissappointing

I just made a Bont M1, Petracca M2 team.
It looks hot

Only 11 keepers but a bunch of guys in the $200-$300k range which might be overspend.
Petracca looks a bull now put on muscle and quick wouldn't be the word He dodged around T Mac and beat 2 very quick players just brilliant Never started him before but no.1 picked now

Daicos (how did he slide to #4???)
He was a father-son selection. These often can slide further down than where they should be selected, as there's little point bidding on them for other clubs. That said, Darcy who was picked at #2 was a F-S too. I guess Nth and GWS may have also wanted a different type of player (taller, can play forward etc).

In hindsight he would have been a top 2 pick, but still would have ended up at the Pies. Should be #1, but clubs very rarely bid on players they know they can't get as the top pick now. Roos were really keen on JHF from months out (probably regret that now), GWS could well have bid on him though. Pretty sure most of the phantom drafts got the order for the top picks right in this year, so I guess the Giants just weren't interested.

Yep, he was always going to end up in black and white, but sour grapes that the Pies didn’t get forced to pay up for him..
As you mentioned we (WBD) had to match a bid for Darcy in that draft at #2, and we had to match to get JUH at #1. Think we also had to match a bid to secure Jordan Croft in the most recent draft.
Guess both clubs have done pretty well from F&S picks, but Pies got a bargain there.

I was just having a look at Petracca, thinking that he could be a pretty attractive pick - very durable, consistent high scorer with an upside case.

Oliver missed more games than I recalled though (10 home and away) - is it possible that Petracca is overpriced if Oliver plays more games? Or are you seeing that as quite unlikely at this point?
