I'm still getting my head around this, so those that play round 0 essentially are one game less in overall points contributing to your side or have a I got that wrong? These 8 teams have an additional bye, interesting.

Nope, that's correct.

Each premium that plays in R0 is probably 50pts down (maybe 4-5ppg after you get around to upgrades) on one that doesn't, because of the extra bye.

It's somewhat mitigated by getting a best 18 round with only two teams out, but in R2 that will certainly mean a rookie score coming in as your 18th versus a playing premium.

It means in picking guys like Daicos, Petracca, Walsh and all the rest, you are banking on them improving enough to cover the fact that they miss an early game.

I think Daicos could go 120+, so he's probably still in ahead of going 'safe' and taking Sicily or Stewart instead. For now anyway.
Petracca without Oliver could beast, so he's probably still in (just) ahead of someone like Dawson.
Walsh? I'm not sure he improves enough to still do better than a Brayshaw/Serong/Butters/Rozzee/LDU type pick while giving up an extra game, now that Cerra is there as well. Would need a ripping pre-season and Round 0 game I think to come back into consideration for me.

Pre-season will tell us more, but maybe a zero premium forward line could have merit this season and aim to capitalise on midfield/defender premium points early, especially on players not having the early bye.

Rucks are an issue thought as this is where the savings to fund the premiums comes from with Gawn and Grundy, would rather have English I think.

Petracca going to be interesting to watch, well owned in many teams despite Oliver out.

Huh you say! There was data out earlier this week that (not sure if 2023 or longer history) Petracca w/out Oliver went -5pts to I think 113 and w/out Harmes/Petracca was even lower again.

However, sometimes the data doesn't tell the full story. Petracca suffers a knee issue and usually by half way in the season they place him more forward to manage his body, which coincided with Oliver out last year. Despite Oliver out last season Petracca CBA's fell 14ppt to 61%, TOG down 4% to 84%.

Dominating preseason is the talk and expect he goes bang at start of the season. That early bye remains the issue, games before bye Swans, Bulldogs, Hawks, Port, Adelaide and Lions.

Here is my 1st try at the selection table. I've selected no Round 0 players. Only Williams on the bench and a rookie. Not sure of the best way to approach the season, but it’s definitely a shamozzle from a SC perspective.

Interesting Professor, 6 genuine premiums, couple if hopefuls, which if they don’t make premium status unlikely make $150k.

Some nice premium selections but a few other mid priced selections are quite interesting.

Feel Jones is a nothing pick given it is difficult to envisage a solid return on investment given the high variance in the role, historically a low possession getter and a below average kick in a side fighting for slices of that SC pie. For him to be successful would heavily rely on a very poor batch of rookies and I would prefer not to pick Williams if the intention is for him to be stuck on the bench.

Dropping Jones down to a rookie could allow Miers to a midfield premium via moving Harmes to the forward line. What are your expectations for Soldo as I find it difficult to place him ahead of the likes of Grundy and Gawn in the salary cap formats? Heading to a new side does not automatically translate to a significant scoring bump and do you think he can be involved enough around the ground to compensate for any matches with low contributions from hitouts?

The key from opening round will be finding the right balance but I do not think dismissing those options is the way to go if it leads to less desirable selections.

Thanks Adam, the purpose of this side was to illustrate no Round 0 players, hence I left Williams on the bench. He'd definitely be onfield if playing. Regarding the Jones pick, he fractured his arm last year and previously was playing well, not super. He's in the side for intercept marking and expectation would be an 80. The Soldo pick, I am not sold on yet. I'm expecting him to be leading the ruck, he's never had much time on his own as sole ruck when at Richmond, so this year if healthy he's got an opportunity to show what he can do. Again because I haven't picked any round 0 players Gawn and Grundy haven't come into consideration. I feel Griers could have a mini breakout and average 90-95.
Appreciate your suggestions which do make sense. I haven't fully got my head around a strategy yet after switching across from BBL mode.

Bench cover will be crucial for round 0 bye players that have been selected. I need to find a happy medium between the 2. How many round 0 players would we be picking?

Liam jones is nearly 33 and has never averaged in the 80s in his career, really doubt his going to start now. Heaps better options out there.

The strategy you have decided to go with for now is sound. It’s just on face value, some of the picks don’t look great.

With some tweaking you could get this looking like quite a powerful team. My suggestions are;

Clark to Young
Jones to a cheap rookie - Hore, Pink or Reid perhaps
Wardlaw & Ginbey to a non-bye mid premium and a cheap rookie - Sharp or Clark?
Chesser to a cheap rookie who will probably score better - Sharp or Clark?
Soldo to Marshall
Walker to Jackson

I’m not a big fan of the Miers pick, would prefer C Daniel or Moore there but if you think Miers will break out then trust your gut.

All those picks don’t have early byes but appear to be better options than what you have currently got. Increases your ‘keepers’ considerably too.

Draft 1 after some early match sims. No doubt the deck will be shuffled but this is the team for the first draft.

Sicily and Stewart in the DEF line. Sicily may become Sinclair. Will need to see how the Hawks set up in. A few players returning from injuries that could change the Hawks DEF structure this year. Sheezel in the same role will improve and Young into full time mid, yes please. Chapman and Williams to round out the DEF Line and no stress waiting for on field rookies to be named.

Laird, #35 will start in the mids. My goodness he looks in ripping form in the sims, just a freak ( but I could be a bit one eyed). Brayshaw is in there at the moment along with Touk and Steele that offer great value and potential top 10 mids. The top draft picks finish the line.

Gawn and Grundy……….easy

Macrae locked, FYFE their he is again, teasing us all, hyped as a full time MID this year, and if fit for RD1 he will be in my team. Harmes at F3 but this could change during pre-season games, lots of options around that price point. Fin is turning heads during the sim matches and looks to have the Adams roll. Cayman due to North and WCE early, hoping he can kick a few and Mannagh is a point scoring machine.

13,800K ITB If funding is needed for stronger bench, Chapman will be cut for Gibcus.

On Watch
DEF Duggan Ridley Himmelberg Yeo:cool:
MID Parish Newcombe LDU Dow Berry
FWD Mackenzie Robertson Lynch (WCE DPP)

Daicos, Sicily, Young, Williams, Gibcus, Coffield (Hore, Pink)
Bont, Dawson, Butters, LDU, Reid, McKercher, Sanders, Curtin (Wilson, Sharp, Clark)
Gawn, Grundy (Maley)
Macrae, Jackson, Flanders, Billings, Watson, Macrae (Darcy, Mannagh)

Pretty much a cookie cutter side, but I like it at the minute.

Seen some very nice sides.

61k left.
