Fingers crossed they get rid of the sub

"AFL changes, such as a decision on the push to scrap the substitute and add a fifth player to the bench, will be among the issues canvassed at a full-day meeting of football heads this month.
The 18 club football managers will meet for a league briefing on June 25 that will cover 27 areas within three main categories in the detailed competitive balance review: football performance, football operations and talent pathways.
The push by several coaches to do away with the sub, which is unpopular with players and coaches alike, and instead add the fifth player to the bench is one of the key decisions that clubs are waiting on.
Adding another player to the bench instead of having a substitute would raise significant list management questions for clubs, and particularly whether more clubs would seek to play a genuine second ruckman and rotate players off the bench instead of using a hybrid player as a second ruck as many do now.
While several clubs would just add another runner and keep their structure, any change to playing numbers in the game would raise questions for list managers."

Where does it end? They brought the sub in to allow for a concussed player to be subbed off, then it was any injured player and now it's whoever whenever.
If they go to a 5th sub, in a year or 2 clubs will bleat about how they are disadvantaged when someone is injured, and they are down a rotation.
By all means scrap the sub, but leave it at 4 on the bench.

I think the argument is that the difference between 3 v 4 on the bench more impactful than the difference between 5 v 4. So by having a 5th player teams can absorb a lost rotation better. It’s also relevant if teams lose 2 or more too.
I think the reality is the way the game had changed, 5 on the bench made sense more than 4 + a sub.

Trying to think outside the square - Maybe the AFL could put the risk back onto the clubs to decide. Something like every team get 4 interchange players and 80 rotations for a match. A club can then choose to name extra interchange players for a match, but each extra player they choose to start on the bench they lose 10 rotations.

I actually enjoyed no Thursday night footy this round. Probably in the minority.
It would be interesting to know the public opinion on Thursday night footy, but it didn't get asked as a question in their fan survey, the closest was asking the preferred time slot to watch games. It is worth taking the survey below just to vote for one of the "no sub" options in one of the questions though (options are either 4 or 5 on the bench with no sub or 4 on the bench plus a sub):
