Lol I hadn't heard of him until his name popped up in the last week.
There were no established coaches available really. I think we have suffered from a run of competant nice guys Neil Craig then Sando and both had zero mongrel streak. The aggression to take a game or a player by the scruff and give it an almighty shake.
Walsh's credentials seem fine I hope he's been picked because he has that mongrel in him too!

When does the AFL bring it's coaching salary cap in?
I was thinking it would be interesting if the players and coaches salary caps were combined. Does a club have 1 coach and spend more on players or do they have 3 coaches and spend less money on players? I would also like to see no set number of players on the list. It would be up to the clubs whether they want to spend their salary cap on 30, 40 or 50 players.
Imagine if in Supercoach you had a line coach and a head coach as part of your starting squad. Melbourne's defensive coach would have been a good pick up this year because their points against went from 2691 to 1954.
So I watched the press conference with Phil Walsh. He was very impressive and Andrew ***an used the term "hard edge" several times which pleased me. He has a bit of a guru thing going on. Feeling more confidant about the year ahead. Hopefully he sorts Danger out fast!
How lucky have I been to see all those great players. Ablett snr could play as a small forward but you couldn't pick a team with all those key forwards. Harvey and Reiwoldt out, Jarman and Simon Black in. Voss captain. Ricciuto unlucky.
I thought the way he was appointed at Brisbane was wrong and I thought he was doing it because he was courted by the club. But this suggests he really wants to coach and wants to learn. I'm surprised and impressed.

I think Hirdy and Voss have both proved you shouldn't waltz in as a former club golden boy without doing a decent apprenticeship first, at least Buckley had Malthouse to contend with for a while.
Big move for him to move to Adelaide though, getting out of his comfort zone.
Honestly after spending a year watching and listening to him on Fox Footy the conclusion that I came to is that he is actually not that smart.
He may be a good leader of men which helped him be a great Captain and would have helped some aspects of being a coach. However the part of coaching that requires critical and intelligent thinking I feel he is lacking.
