Utilising a loophole is great but you also need to be making $$$ esp early in the SC season. 3 is way to many for me, the R4 is fine and D8 is an iffy one. If there are rookies playing i would prefer to go with someone who could make me 50k-120k then be concerned with loopholing. I prefer to have loophole options to the end of the season rather than the start
Very true. Maximum points early is still very crucial. To be near the top before the byes and before everyone has finished there upgrades is what im aiming for. Very hard to go up the ranks once all teams are fully upgraded as most teams will have the same players. I climbed up the ranks late with a couple of great rounds as others didn't have trades to cover there donuts.
Smashed my old PB of 2498 with a 2765.

Will we be getting more of your genius work?? Got a sneak peek..:)
I'm hoping to post 100 of those in a thread. I have 43 prepared already, but I have stalled a little lately. I will get back into the swing of it, so I can hopefully post the 100 by late January.

Interesting to see that AFL fantasy starting Pricers are a lot higher this year..
Jack Martin $268300 last years starting price..

Petracca has been given dual position status and may be claimed as a forward or a midfielder in 2015. His starting price is $297,000.

I would think that 3 would be too many. Most people can't make too much money from D8 or R4, and those are the two most common loopholing positions. It is good if you can find a r/f for loopholing rucks and forwards, and a d/m for loopholing defenders and midfielders. Cain Hanley looks to be a good option if he is DPP d/m.

I'm always torn at whether to rock 2 or 1, but I think you'll find 3 is giving up too much cash.
I think the R4 is th best way to go. And make him an R/F. There's the potential wasted trade if you go else where. Come round 3 there will be a rookie on the bubble with a b/e of -105. All your other rookies are going ok so you trade the donut. Usually the way things go you will always have floating donut options through rest/injury.

I think unless there are a few genuine options as basement priced rucks then yes, R4 would be the clear winner for a floating donut spot (R/F if possible) to captain loophole.

I think this question also tests whether it is better to have more than one floating donut. Maybe two floating donuts that could cover all lines of the ground (e.g. R/F and D/M) would be even more beneficial than one or none. These issues have been cover time over and again. Read a lot about it and decide what's right for you, and how many points/dollars you can make or lose. Be realistic though, your D8 is unlikely to make you 150k each time around. I think it's important to have at least one. Have a clear plan in your mind for how a donut can benefit you.

The tactic that I used last year was to certainly have one, and I would like two if I could make a quick win on it. So last year i started with Thurlow (R/F) and then after Langdon punched out a ton from D7 as emergency I quickly traded out Clurey for a D/M donut. This meant that I quick gained 70 points and I didn't waste a trade to get there. If Langdon had dropped a 40 I may have gambled that Clurey would score higher than this and not started a donut.

To add to this lesson, last year after round 2 I made that 'corrective' 'trade out donut' to get A.Georgiou (1 trade). I traded him out after a lot of poor scores and he was dropped to Jed Bews for bye cover (2 trades, 83k made). Jed Bews sat at D8 and made me a further 29k. He didn't play when I needed cover, and he played whenever I wanted a donut.
Summary: D8 = 2 trades, maybe 100 points to my score about 112k (the Bews portion was still on my bench, so really only 83k) and no ability to loophole or contribute in some way meaningfully.

Needless to say I will be planning to rock 2 donuts in 2014. Advice: Make sure you do the math and actually see what you stand to gain or lose from multiple floating donuts.

Good conversation. I started with Ben Brown as my r4 and loopholed Hmac and Hickey up to the byes and then Brown played after the byes and Stefan Martin went nuts so everything worked really well. In defence I wasted 2 trades on dud d8's before finally putting JHunt in as a floating donut which I used to loophole my 7 defenders and bring in a mid at one point when I had 2 defenders down. So my experience last year was, no floating donut bad, floating donut good, 2 floating donuts very good.
I've never had the problem of trying to sacrifice a rookie making money to jump on a massive bubble boy because I have always had a dud rookie but I like the thinking.

Thanks freowho and others.
The more people that can reply with their experiences on floating donuts, the better we can manage this in 2015 and beyond.

I think Hunt from the dees was a popular one from last season. A D/M donut with Langdon and McDonald in the team plus Melbourne had a very good draw for a loophole. The other one I had was M.King in the ruck who was all season. I ended up trading Hunt out for Tyson before round 3.

Supercoach is much like the BOM with forecasts and Melbourne weather. So many different variables, and week to week you can get it so wrong or so right. It's always changing. For every loophole you get right one week you get wrong the next and back to square one. Would be interesting to see (if people could be bothered) to asses their success rate for the whole season. How many extra points did they win stacked up against the times they lost.

Personally I wont be going out of my way to have a floater. If you're looping DEF rookies for example early in the season how much do you seriously gain? Player X gets 40 so you play player Y who gets 55. Is those 20/30/40 potential points worth more than a players making money, making upgrades easier, completing your team earlier and maybe fitting 7 good DEFS in your team to loop later? Or having cover later in the season and making 100 points in one week saving a trade because a DEF is out for a week lol. I don't know the answer to that yet lol. We need a better indication of selection to determine if there are enough rookies playing.

I was hell bent on a floater in hunt last season, though I changed it quickly. So this season I wont be making any plans for a floater bar R4 for the captain loophole. I'm not worried about the other lines. I've always found I very rarely have 30 players selected. So loophole options pop up ever week anyways. The potential missed loop points can be also made up during the byes. Those two extra players could provide and extra 150 points in a week there.

And even if you don't start some floater there is always the option to bring one in later esp if downgrade options are drying up. So for my 2015 championship year I'm going to select 29 players selected for round one and a Donut R4. Though like the Melbourne weather circumstances always change lol.

Thanks for the feedback. Well the answer for my D8 for me last season is that I did not make extra money or help me to upgrade my team quicker (cost 2 trades, made about 80k, finished the year with 90k), they didn't provide me additional score during the bye rounds (as Bews' scores weren't in my best 18), and in the first 2 weeks that I had a floating donut I was rewarded with 110 points.

It is really each to their own though as I said, because different people may have different experiences. I dont believe that my D8 could add 150 points to my side during the byes, because I plan carefully for the byes and increase my ranking dramatically during them. As for cover late in the season, that would be the time that it is great. I have not found many D8s that play weekly, and score 100 points when they come into my side.

It works for me. It sounds like it worked better for you by not having it. The important thing always is reviewing how it actually did effect your $$ made, points scored and trades spent so we can access these things as best we can.

It can chop and change, it may or may not work lol, each week will be different to the next. Too many variables enter. You plan to upgrade x and y at round 12, but then as you approach your target has a b/e of 200, your trade bait has a break even of 20 and another two premiums suffer a month injury lol. It swings and turns like no limit holdem. No doubt that 90k left was because of ruined plans to many forced trades late, like myself I think I ended up with 150+k left but ran out of trades because of forced sideways trades.

I personally wont be focusing on the byes like last season, all this planning then in the last week had quite a few premiums out anyways lol.

It'll be a lot harder to plan for the byes from the start of the year because there will be a lot of upgrading before then. I think it is a case of one eye on the byes and one eye on best available player.

Not a lot of premos in the Backline this year makes all the POD selections even more relevant. Like Hibbo, Hodge, McGovern, Newnes

I reckon Hibbo isn't a POD in this climate, but you are right on the others. Picking mid pricers may seem like the way, but if you get them wrong it can be a tough gig to get a premium in their place.

Just seen your supercoach rank for last year, that's insane  we'll done mate.. Your right about trying to pick the Backline POD's this year will be a big task..
I think we have to look @ TOG to see if there's improvement there in some players..
Can't wait for Rowsus's thread " Can Statistics Find The Next Break Out Player "

Newnes blitzes time trial

The players are embracing everything we're throwing at them.
Alan Richardson
JACK Newnes has blitzed the club’s third 2km time trial at Casey Fields this morning, finishing ahead of Josh Saunders and new recruit Dan McKenzie who came second and third respectively.

Newnes has been at the front of the pack in each athletic drill of the pre-season and has shown stamina and endurance to lead St Kilda’s younger brigade of midfielders through a challenging period.

Newnes said following the trial how tough the workload has been leading up to Christmas.

“We came off 10 days in New Zealand where the workload was huge and everyone is just a little bit sore from that, but for myself and all the other boys to run PBs on a day like today is really pleasing,” he told SAINTS.com.au.

“This pre-season has topped it, this has been the hardest one so far.”

“Adam Basil (St Kilda’s High Performance Manager) gave us a huge workload in the pre-season when we weren’t at the club and then came back and got smashed and New Zealand was the hardest away trip that we’ve done, tougher than Boulder. The workload has been huge and the results are showing.”

Coach Alan Richardson expected the middle-tier players would step up after showing some promising signs since returning from the off-season.

"The players are embracing everything we're throwing at them," Richardson said on Wednesday.

"We had some pretty strong footy early in the year when we had our most experienced team at on the park, and we had some misfortune in terms of those blokes staying out there… We'll be in better shape from that point of view.

"We'll certainly need guys in the midfield to step up in the absence of Lenny Hayes but David Armitage couldn't be in better shape, Jack Steven didn't have a great run with his body, and when you consider he was our best and fairest the year before, we'd expect him to get back to that sort of form.

"[The improvement] will really come from our third, fourth, fifth-year players – Jack Newnes, Seb Ross and Tom Curren. "

Wednesday’s time trial was a first for the club’s new recruits who continue to be on restricted workloads to ease them into the elite environment.

Midfielder Dan McKenzie gave Newnes a run for his money, slipping to third place after keeping pace with the 21-year-old most of the way.

“I heard Dan McKenzie was pretty fit so for him to come third in a big group is pretty huge for a first year. He’ll be able to build on his fitness and be at the front in no time I reckon,” Newnes said.

“Even some of the other boys like Jack Lonie made a good time, Hugh Godard all those type of lads, everyone was running well for their first 2km.”

Newnes, touted as an emerging leader in St Kilda’s young list, spoke of the challenges that the group has faced since making a pact to bring stick together through tough times.

He said the group buy-in was the most significant achievement in the lead up to the 2015 season.

“The whole group is looking really good at the moment, everyone is really buying into the hard work and I think it’s paying off so far.”

I know absolutely nothing about this guy but looking like he might be popular next year. Has something been said about more midfield time for him or.??
