Newnes the latest Saint to sign a new deal

ST KILDA wingman Jack Newnes has signed a two-year contract extension that will tie him to the club until the end of 2017.
The 21-year-old is the latest young player to sign on as part of the Saints' 'future fest', joining Luke Dunstan, Josh Saunders and Lewis Pierce.
Jack Billings is expected to announce a contract extension in the coming days, with rookies Mav Weller and Eli Templeton also expected to earn senior list contracts.

Newnes said he had a lot of confidence in the Saints' young list and the group wanted to drive the club back up the ladder in 2015.
After a carving out an important role across half-back and on a wing, he said he was hoping to spend more time in the engine room next season.
"I’m definitely hoping to push more into the midfield," Newnes told the club's website.
"I will have to put a bit of size on again, hopefully a couple of kilos, before we come back and start our running work.
"But becoming an inside midfielder would be ideal."
Rated highly for his work ethic and neat skills, Newnes is also seen as a future leader at St Kilda.
In just his third season, he finished sixth in the Saints' 2014 club champion award.
Head of football Chris Pelchen said Newnes had shown a commitment to improve on and off the field.
"His leadership among the younger players provides a positive example for others to aspire to," Pelchen said.

A lot of chatter about Jack Newnes since he gained DPP and some others didn't as expected (hoped). You'd have to be confident on him improving (at least 10-20 points) again. If pricing remains the same as last year he will come in at around 436k. At above 400k he must be a keeper. For an below 70k you can upgrade to any of B.Smith, H.Shaw, L.Hodge, M.Hibberd, C.Enright, G.Birchill, J.Kelly, A.Walker or S.Hurn. All more proven scores.
I will be running a different game plan to others and I will have the most solid defence I can, as I believe there aren't many solid value options available. Expect 4 proven 90+ scores, and I will let others gamble that they can get that can make up any lost points across other lines. Much more value in rucks, forwards and mid rookies.

Mid to low 400K. As a doggies supporter, I see him playing most games and in the guts. With the loss of Griffin and Cooney, you can expect Bont to get a lot of game time through midfield. Have Boyd, Libba, Wallis, Macrae and Bont (with Hunter, Rat and a few other boys). I personally see Bont being in first drop midfield. But as it is preseason, Wallis is "training the house down" and could push him out of that starting midfield position. But Boyd may get fazed out with Bont now.
Jurn I know where you are coming from with this and I have no intention of deterring you from your decide strategy but I wonder if you have read a very good article by Rowsus on defenders. Go to page 1 of the Questions For Rowsus thread. Started Jan 2014 it really got me thinking about my defender selections this year. I did quite well in defence in 2014 due to this.
Defenders are tricky this coming season, no doubt about it. I suspect that there will players who are not listed as defenders in SC who will be premium defenders in the real world eg Hanley but top SC defenders one year do not always repeat the next year. And I think there are a few who might fit into this category in 2015.

Thanks for the heads up and I will certainly keep this in mind. I had read over it but another read will make me think and think again. Nothing wrong with thinking over your strategy. I just think I want to avoid the more speculative types like Jack Newnes and Seedsman, were people speculate they will or could score higher.
Will be much tougher than just locking in McVeigh at the beginning of the year.

The trouble with guys like Seedsman is that he is a speculative selection but it looks like so many people will have him that if it comes off it isn't like you have some one unique. And if it goes south you end up saying to yourself "What was I thinking!!!!" I have my own POD defender but I am keeping that to myself for the moment.

Theres a good chance my defence will be a work in progress through the first 6 rounds unless I hit the jackpot and my mid pricers turn into keepers. A few downgrade upgrades if the likes of seedsman, ibbo backfire on me. Hopefully my midfield and fwd line dont need tampering with during this time or it could be a longgg year

No Boyd, no Giles, Patton gone for majority of the year, surely they need a second ruck to give Mummy a quick chop out and a second tall forward to help Jezza Cameron.

Edit:Top averaging hitouts per player for GWS in 2014.
Mumford: 36.4 (very injury prone)
Giles: 23.7 (Gone to essendon)
Andrew Phillips: 6 (23 years old, 201cm, 96kg, 1 match)
Boyd: 2.9 (gone to doggies)
Ward: 1.9 (don't think he'll be taking Lobbs spot)
Lobb: 1.5 (22 years old, 206cm, 95kg, 2 matches)
Patton: 1.1 (Injured)
GWS averaged 43 hitouts a match and I assume more when mumford was playing so that points to at least some time in the ruck from their ruck forward. Hopefully lobb can fill the role.
