Champion Data Ranking Points
During the 2014 off-season, the Champion Data ranking points system was given a major review. As a result, there will be a few changes made to the scoring system this season with ruckmen being effected more than any other position type.
When Champion Data ranking system was first developed in 1999 there was an average of 47 around the ground stoppages (throw-ins/ball ups) per gameand the No.1 ruckman in the competition, averaged 27.5 hitouts.
Around the ground stoppages have steadily risen in the years since, reaching a peak of 67 per game in 2014, with 12 ruckmen averaging more than 27.5 hitouts. As a result, the rankings values have been changed around the ruck contests, with the clear goal to give greater value to ruckmen who win the ball around the ground and are more effective with their hitouts.
In 2015, rather than awarding one point for all hitouts, there will be zero points allocated, but the value of a hitout-to-advantage has risen from three points to five, rewarding quality over quantity. The points allocated to the player that wins a gather from a hitout has also dropped slightly, as more credit will be given to the effective hitout.
When applying the new formula to the 2014 H&A season, all averages of the ruckmen decrease, but to differing levels. Those elite tap ruckmen who also win the footy around the ground decrease the least, while Grant Thomas' favourites, the dinosaurs, who offer little outside the ruck contest will drop significantly.
As a guide here are the five ruckmen who are effected the least. Sam Jacobs not only serves the ball to his rovers on a platter, he now offers plenty around the ground averaging 16.3 disposals per game in 2014 -second to Brisbane's Stefan Martin.

On the flip side, here are five rucks you want to avoid if they produce the same output of 2014. Robert Warnock averaged just nine disposals per match and two tackles - both ranked below average. It's the hitout or nothing for Warnock. Avoid these rucks at all costs.

At the end of the 2014 season there were 11 ruckmen in the top 100 players for ranking points per game. After the new formula is applied there are eight.
