The Floating Donut has been discussed heavily recently, but here is a example of how the Floating Donut may pan out in SuperCoach 2013.

You should read the following articles in order to understand the Pros and Cons of the Floating Donut:

Using Jake Neade, a Midfield/Forward of Port Adelaide as an example, the table shown below may give an idea on whether the Floating Strategy is for you or not. For the purposes of this example, I have chosen not to use Sam Colquhoun, a Midfield/Defender as it appears he might get some games in 2013. In order to understand the table below, please note:

  • C indicates only the Captain Loophole can be used
  • 1C indicates the Captain Loophole and 1 player in the Emergency Player Loophole can be used
  • 2C indicates a Captain Loophole and 2 players in the Emergency Player Loophole can be used
  • The number associated each round indicates the Game Number of each round, note where Games Numbers are closed you need to check the day and/or time of the games to see if they are played simultaneously.
Note that this is the bare minimum of the benefit of the Floating Donut as in rounds where a rookie cannot be used as in the Emergency Player loophole, you can still try a premium or mid-priced player (It's a free hit!).

I've used the popular rookies in this example, namely: O'Mearer(GCS), Viney(Melb), Crouch(ADE), K.Mitchell (PTA), Forward Daniher (ESS), Captains/Vice-Captain Pendlebury/Ablett. Please note that in round 7, Goddard is the token Vice-Captain.

I reiterate for this is just an example and Neade was chosen as the Floating Donut as he has the Midfield/Forward attribute, which allows Daniher to come into play.

I will investigate this more during the pre-season and give an update, when we get a better idea who is likely to get games. Ideally, we would find Melbourne players with DPP, however in this case there is none at rookie priced. At this stage choosing a Melbourne player who is not a DPP should be avoided as I prefer to have 2 bites of the cherry.

For me, all that needs to occur is a few 40s v 80s rookie choices and one or two captain choices in the Floating Donut's favour and it's a win. In rounds where we can not use a rookie with the Emergency Player Loophole, but are required to use a premium/mid-priced player in lieu, all that needs to occur is a niggle and a sub-effected score from a premium-mid priced player and it's a massive win. I'd rather forgo the potential profi of a cash cow per my article: Value of a Cash Cow and hopefully pick the right eventual Captain and right starting rookie each round.

While I thought I could release this article during the pre-season, I thought it would be appropriate to release this article a few weeks early due to SuperCoach being released today!!

The importance of this article is to give you a sample Floating Donut and also to provide you the table so you get a feel of the Floating Donut's draw.

For those who don't feel like having a Floating Donut, I won't try to convince you, but this is an example of how it will work with the popular rookies.

Therefore, at this stage, goodbye Sam Dwyer!

However, note my further comment:

Thanks for that!!

Also, I just realised that we will need to add one more line which is for Forward/Midfield DPP to swing the Floating Donut forward to take advantage of Daniher. For the Forward part of the Emergency Player loophole, we only need to look at games where Daniher plays and fortunately, Essendon play a lot of games early. The Forward/Midfield DPP needs to always play after Daniher and thus we focus on round 2 (Thomas/Robinson),4 (Rockilff), 9 (TBA), 10(Martin).

Note: where it is not possible to play Daniher as an Emergency due to the fixture, we can still use premiums and mid-pricers as our Emergency player and if they play well, they go on the field and if not they stay emergency.
For example, the first game between the Crows (Crouch) against the Bombers (Daniher) in round 1:

For example, the first game between the Crows (Crouch) against the Bombers (Daniher):

M - Ablett(vc), Pendles(c) [Crouch(E), Neade]
F - Rockliff [Daniher(E), F8]

You get 2 free hits there with Daniher and Crouch.

  • Crouch (Bad), Daniher (Good) - Neade floats to the Forward on the field, thus we get Daniher's score
  • Crouch (Good), Daniher (Bad) - Neade starts in the Midfield and we get Crouch score, Daniher we ignore
  • Crouch (Good), Daniher (Good) - Neade starts in Midfield (Crouch) or floats to starting Forward (for Daniher). We need another floating donut for each good score if we want the second good score.
  • Crouch (Bad), Daniher (Bad) - We don't want either of their scores, so just pick the usual starters and Neade stays on the bench in midfield or forward.
Round 2

M - Ablett(vc), Pendles(c) [Crouch(E), Neade]
F - Rockliff [Martin(E), F8]

  • Crouch (Bad), Martin (Good) - Neade floats to the Forward on the field, thus we get Martin's score
  • Crouch (Good), Martin (Bad, Fadeout) - Neade starts in the Midfield and we get Crouch score, Martin we ignore
  • Crouch (Good), Martin (Good) - Neade starts in Midfield (Crouch) or floats to starting Forward (for Martin). We need another floating donut for each good score if we want the second good score.
  • Crouch (Bad), Martin (Bad) - We don't want either of their scores, so just pick the usual starters and Neade stays on the bench in midfield or forward.
In both examples, Rockliff is the partner of Neade and needs to play after the Forward(e). Note in the round 2, Martin who presumably is a premium position is an emergency, as it's a Free Hit as no rookies will play before Rockliff and Martin. While we do expect Martin to score a 100 (LOL?), it doesn't hurt we have protection in case of an LTI, poor game etc. As per my previous comments, if Martin is in the team, we expect him to score 100+, but it's more of free security. Naturally, when we learn more about rookies during the preseason and when round 1 teams are named, we may find another rookie who will play in the forward line with Daniher.
EDIT - Will make table more easier on the eyes later today

I'm a little bit slow on the up-take sometimes, so just for those that didn't see it straight away (I certainly didn't), here's what I see the AVE and bolding meaning.
The AVE is the teams average game number over the first 10 rounds. So, using an obvious example, if a team was 2nd last to play in each round of the first 10 weeks, all the numbers in front if it, from rounds 1 to 10 would be 8. They would total 80, and when divided by 10 for the number of rounds would give them an average game number of 8, so under AVE it would say 8.0 for that team.
The bolding represents the teams Jay's Fwd and Mid Rookies play in, and when they play before Jay's Port Adelaide floating donut.
A quick look at the AVE's would suggest that Melbourne would be the best team to select your floating donut from, but as Jay explained, Melbourne don't have any M/F Rookies.
So as Jay also explained with C, 1C and 2C explanation, under Jay's model you get all 10 weeks where you can have a crack at the Captains Loophole, you get 5 weeks where you get 2 cracks at the emergency loophole, and 3 weeks where you get 1 crack at the emergency loophole.
Of course, this is only one model (a very good one, though), and you may prefer to structure your own a little differently.
The numbered table above is a really good tool if you want to map out your plan.
I think you may have just won one or two of the doubters over, Jay. :)

Jay if we near round one and I become confident nic nat is going to only miss one or two weeks. Would it mad to carry him in as my floating donut and save a trade to get him in later? By doing this he would be my only non scoring player round one. My donut for other rounds later will more than likely be filled by one of my players missing. Although I suppose it would be more manageable knowing ahead of time where your donut was coming from. Anyway what you think of starting with nic nat?

I'm not 100% sure but can you take the captain off a player so you don't have one. I mean you could have your VC get like 150 and not need a floating donut just have no captain..

Agreed, love the table Jay. It will be really handy.:)

Melbourne and then the Hawks have the highest average for what number game there match is played each round but much as you say the Hawks like the Dees don't have many, if any, DPP rookies.

The Blues first three weeks is encouraging for a floating donut, maybe Sam Rowe gets another look?

I'm not 100% sure but can you take the captain off a player so you don't have one. I mean you could have your VC get like 150 and not need a floating donut just have no captain..
Nah doesn't work, SC automatically put the C on the highest priced player from memory. I think we discussed it at some stage last season.
Would be handy though if thats how it worked.:)

I hope this helps... I can change it if you need

Am I understanding this bit about Daniher right?
He should be considered for a spot in our forward lines if he plays early due to Essenedon's fix in that they have so many games early on the weekend in the first half of the season. Hence we get a chance to play the emergency loophole in the forward line by having him on the pine as an emerge.

I think I am understanding the Daniher part but confirmation would be nice.:)

Confirmed.

Thanks for the response Jay and for clearing it up. I do like the idea of having a couple of goes at getting my rookies right because a little can go a long way after 22 rounds. Now need to hope Hirdy plays Daniher fairly often so we can use him in that forward rookie role.

One more thing, in some cases, you may have to choose between the Captain Loophole or the Emergency Player Loophole.

But remember, one Floating Donut gives you the benefit of one Loophole, but in some cases you get to use one Floating Donut for two Loopholes, but the key here is you need to only expect one benefit.

I'll explain this in the next few weeks as right now so long as you know that one Floating Donut is for one Loophole then you are fine. However, you might get a surprise bonus of one Floating Donut but for two Loopholes.

A quick example is:

M - Ablett(vc), Pendles(cap) [Crouch(E), Neade]

Ablett scores 150, Crouch 90 means becomes:

M - Pendles:(, Ablett(vc), Neade (cap) [Crouch(E), K.Mitchell]

Therefore, you've used one Floating Donut of Neade for the Captain Loophole and the Emergency Player Loophole. Naturally, there are 4 different combinations of how Ablett and Crouch perform, however for now remember one Floating Donut is for the benefit of one Loophole!!

It does get a bit complicated, but I think overall, there are some merits in the Floating Donut :)

The one thing I have concluded about the floating donut is that it MUST be DPP. The reason being due to what happens if you want to carry a missing player for one week.

Here is an example if you used a back floating donut that is not DPP:
Say Team A and team B are identical except for the floating donut, eg Team A has the donut, Team B has Staker who we assume will play:

Team A: Goddard, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, [B7 (Emg), Frost (floating donut)].
Team B: Goddard, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, [B7 (Emg), Staker].

Obviously if all players are playing except for Frost Team A can use the emergency loophole to get a look at B7 while Team B can't.

Now let say Goddard is to miss one week due to injury or suspension, obviously most people would not trade him out. Suddenly the teams looks like this:

Team A: B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, [Frost, Goddard].
Team B: B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, [Staker (Emg), Goddard (floating donut)].

Suddenly Team A is stuck with the six players, while Team B can have a look at Staker's score and use Goddard as the floating donut if wanting to take Staker's score.

But if Team A instead had used a DPP floating donut instead of Frost then the team can be juggled around. Of course it can get really complicated if there are other players missing on the DPP's other line which as Hairy stated really does make one's brain hurt!

Again really great stuff people are coming up with to go along with Jay's articles. Absolutely loving it!!:)
After much thought I have come to the conclusion of picking a player as my floating donut but unsure which DPP position will make the most of it. I am think MID/FOR atm due to the lack of quality forward rookie options and just presuming that a FOR is more likely to get an ordinary score so two goes at getting it right in that position could be handy.

Not that I would advocate it or do it myself but you could let the first match or two help you decide, so you start with:

Def: Van Unen (Emg), Mid: Crouch (Emg), Fwd: Daniher (Emg)

And then say Van Unen miracously scores 136 while Crouch & Daniher dud it up you suddenly say "Well bugger it, I'd better get a back floating donut!".
