Bennell looks like he's reinjured his calf...or still having issues with it and only jogging at the moment. Fyfe restricted to run throughts.

Big Sandi backs Bennell move

Aaron Sandilands has backed the recruitment of Harley Bennell, saying he is "stoked" to have the midfield star roving at his feet this season.

Bennell was restricted to light running at Fremantle Oval this morning as he continues to recover from a nagging calf injury.

The 23-year-old has not been involved in full training since early December after being traded into the club from Gold Coast.

Sandilands could not confirm when Bennell was expected to be back to full fitness, but labelled the goal-kicking on-baller as a great asset.

"It'll be good once he's back out in the main squad training," Sandilands said.

"Being able to work with him ... I'm really excited to have someone of his calibre come into the side and I can't wait for him to be part of the main group."

Sandilands avoided post-season surgery and said, at 33, he still felt physically good.

"The conditioning guys are monitoring me pretty well," he said.

"The body feels great at this point in time. It's just building that base heading into round one."

Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe (back) was restricted to run throughs at training.

Bennell came out onto the track later in the session and did not break out of a jog.

Zac Clarke and Alex Pearce were also limited to running exercises as members of the pre-season rehabilitation group.

Danyle Pearce and Garrick Ibbotson were notable absentees from a session that was led by Sandilands and Matthew Pavlich.

FREMANTLE INJURY UPDATE

- Nathan Fyfe still has not returned to full training. He missed Freo's main training session but appeared on the track following the session to do some running and he did not look to be in any discomfort. He is not far away from full training.
- Harley Bennell also missed Freo's main training session but he did join Fyfe to do some running following the main session. Bennell is working on an individual program and should return to full training soon.
- Zac Clarke missed the early part of training as he continues to rehabilitation on his ongoing knee problem but he eventually did some light running drills.
- Michael Apeness and Alex Pearce also did some light running drills.
- Garrick Ibbotson and Danyle Pearce were also missing from main training.

Gold Coast poster on another site was saying Bennell has sciatica with the pain going down his leg into his calf stopping him from training and all he can do is rest and let the inflammation go down which is why he misses so many games. I would luv to be on the Harley bandwagon but I'm not so sure. My old boss had sciatica from when he was a teenager and moved like a cripple on the bad days. He used to take a lot of precription drugs so he could exercise. Does anyone have any knowledge of sciatica?

Back induced nerve pain is bad bad bad - mine was due to playing cricket and only got rid of it by doing a lot of core strengthening work and walking every day.

I will forever have two lower back disc bulges, same place as Michael Clarke has issues. Hope for their sakes that Bennell and Fyfe get over their injuries :(

Not sure if the has been mentioned elsewhere, but I caught the end of Footy Classified tonight and Carro mentioned that the AFL would announce latter this week that they have concluded the investigation of the Dustin Martin "chopsticks" incident and they are unlikely to apply any suspension to H/A matches. Hopefully her report is accurate.

Reports of Bennells' preseason woes are not filling me with confidence.

Memo to self: don't pick injury prone premiums.

BRISBANE INJURY UPDATE

- Dayne Beams (knee), Darcy Gardiner (shoulder & ankle) and Josh Green (foot) were among those on lighter duties at training today. They are all expected to be fit and available for the NAB Challenge.
- Tom Rockliff was in the rehab group for training today due to a hamstring niggle. Rockliff says there is nothing to worry about and that he will doing the main session on Friday.
- Green was in a moon boot, but the problem is just bruising and strictly precautionary following a stress fracture in the same foot that cost him six matches in 2015.
- Beams and Gardiner will be back in the main training group in a fortnight.
- Josh Watts (groin) & Cian Hanley (abductor) are the only players expected to miss the NAB Challenge.

"Brisbane Lions small forward Josh Green will miss ten weeks with a fractured foot."

How quickly things can change...

brisbane lions is the team i have the least knowledge of, who fills his void? i know green's form and fitness hasn't always been amazing and someone could cement themselves in his spot by rd 4 or 5 (whenever hes back to match fitness). lots of young talent at brisbane

You would think that if Green has a delayed start to 2016, this probably negatively affects Zorko's output the most as he is their most dangerous small forward and will likely spend more time in the forward-50. In terms of filling the void, hopefully one of their young draftees (keays/Mathieson) can crack into the team.
