This is the most up-to-date team Tranterpants :) feel free to comment (goes for everyone) :p
I like your old stuff better than your new stuff! :)

Version 2 is about three non-rookies different from my side. Very solid.

From freowho in the other thread:

History suggests that 13 to 14 keepers, a floating donut and cash cows is the ideal starting lineup. Everytime I do a team I end up with heaps of cash or 15 keepers without any midpricers.
Just wondering if the conditions this year lend themselves to having an extra keeper. With Ablett, Pendles, Rockliff and maybe Selwood if he plays round 1, we could get our captains under $630k where they normally would have been closer to $700k. Given that I have 3 or 4 captains to choose from I have the luxury of avoiding the highest priced player on each line. Fyfe is a good pick if fit? Shaw and Goldstein are way overpriced for their history and Deledio only has 1 year higher than he is priced at 4 years ago and Richmond have a tough draw.
The sub rule has been abolished so our cash cows have the potential to make more money and Essendon provide us with an expansion team scenario yet neither Gold Coast or GWS ever played without the sub rule.
Any thoughts?

My primary thought is that we should be increasing the quality, not the number, of our starting keepers as a top priority.

As you say, the ultra premium mids are almost all cheap, the abolition of the sub rule improves cash generation, and Essendon's loss may be our SC gain.

Those who speculate on potential list cloggers run a huge risk of not being able to keep up later in the season, in my view. There aren't enough trades to upgrade weak starting keepers, and I think it has the potential to be a very high scoring year.

This post could not have come at a better time for me. Essentially my exact thoughts of the last few days, I'm making sure that my 14 premiums are dead set the guys I want to be backing all the way until round 23, I've decided I don't want any risk (well minimising) involved with my initial premium selections. My thinking is nail those initial premiums, and if I'm in it with a crack then be funky with my traded in players thoughout the season, not initially where it is make or break for your side.

Nice post Darkie, sums up my last couple of days very nicely. :)

I tend to agree with both of your however to get right to the top you still need to take a couple of risks away from the pack.

However in previous years I have taken too many risks and fallen away after promising starts . For example in 2014 I was in the top 500 for the first few weeks than the PODS started failing and I fell away badly come the end of the season.

Last year I started slower but nearly got to the top 100 by Round 17-18. Come the end of the season I ran out of trades and ended 620th.

For this year I am going to stick to a maximum of 4 risky POD premium players. They may come off but they probably will not.

The value in the mids means I will not have a risk on that line this season. The big spend defenders (being Shaw, McVeigh etc) IMO will not be able to maintain their level and are upgrade targets. I am going to take risks in defense.

I also intend on starting Lobbe, but as a stepping stone. I hope he can get to around 500k with Port's early good draw to be able to then sideways him to a Nic Nat, Martin, Sauce etc.

13-14 premiums with a few speculative picks potential keeper picks is the way I intend to go this year.

Anyways after my ramble above here is my current team.

Def: K.Simpson, G.Ibbotson, B.Smith, Z.Williams, M.Brown (WCE), M.Brown (Ess) (N.Broad, M.Hartley)
Mid: N.Fyfe, G.Ablett, S.Pendlebury, T.Rockliff, T.Liberatore, B.Crouch, J.Trengove, J.Gresham (J.Jansen, C.Petracca, N.Freeman)
Ruck: T.Goldstein, M.Lobbe (M.King)
Fwd: D.Martin, L.Dahlhaus, H.Bennell, M.Barlow, S.Kerridge, P.Ahern (N.Kommer, M.Adams)

90,700 left

As you can see I have gone cheap in defense. McVeigh has injury concerns, Shaw is too expensive and really have never considered Boyd or Bartel (both IMO will miss a lot of games in 2016 being rested)

Gone deep in the mids with 4 premiums who I think can be in the top 8-10 come seasons end. Libba could be a keeper on his 2014 numbers and Crouch at the end of 2014 was averaging highly as well. I am expecting Libba to be a keeper and Crouch to be a stepping stone, but hope both can be keepers.

Goldy is a lock. He could drop 10-15 PPG but a 110+ ruck should be picked whatever his price. I am pretty keen now on Lobbe - if he can replicate 2014 he should be able to make enough cash to be able to sideways him to a decent keeper ruck.

Going strong in the forward line. I have my queries with Dahl and the 2 dockers boys but I suspect that Barlow will be able to play more in the mids if he is back to being 100% fully fit and Bennell will go well under RTB's coaching.

I suspect also that Dahlhaus will maintain his midfield time, even though he does play well as a forward with Crameri being suspended.

Rookies are placeholders for now.

Bye structure is 10/11/9

Thoughts?

I cannot say I am a massive fan of the defense. Going with 3 prems only seems light IMO. Also Bartel could well be rested for lots of the year if the cats are a top 4 side and McVeigh has had his injury concerns.

The mids get a tick. Keep an eye on Jelwood though. Won't play NAB challenge and could be iffy for round 1 with his foot problem.

I like the rucks. Not much wrong there.

Risky forward line. How do you think Leuey will go in our side with no support around him? I know he is there as ruck backup but I think there are better cash rookie options for F5 to then strengthen the defense.

Bird is a risky pick but has averaged well over the 90 mark previously for the Swans when he averaged 97.71 from 17 games in 2014 when not affected by the Green or Red vest. With the suspensions now I have cooled off him but still will be watching him in the NAB challenge closely.

My mids and rucks have remained the same throughout the pre-season. I decided to strengthen my backline and added Boyd and McVeigh. My team seemed a bit too cookie cutter and I know the days of the key fwds are dead but I added a pod in Gunston and decided to ditch ruck cover.

I understand your reasoning in trying to find those POD picks, but I don't agree with your 3 cheaper options in the defence.
x Not a fan of the B.Smith pick. He's priced cheap for a reason (even without his concussion score averaged under 80). Crows tough start to the season won't do him any favours. I don't think he's worth starting.
x I understand the potential in Williams but will he play 22 games? He is still yet to establish himself in the best 22. Lots of quality youngsters at GWS.
x Why Ibbotson? I don't see anything to suggest he'll "breakout". Injury prone. His 2013 94 average was only off 13 games. Yet to do a 90+ for 22 games.

I've got Boyd/Bartel. I still see great upside in them due to their scoring potential.
x Dogs are going to challenge for finals again so Boyd will be pivotal for them. He'll be a higher scorer in the defence. If he averages 103+, still worth picking even if he's missing 2-3 games. Dons rookies provide better coverage this year so little chance of donuts.
x The Cats lost a lot of senior guys, so Bartel will be needed every week as the experienced head. While he had a knee injury last year, he has generally played 21+ games previously.

I agree with you on McVeigh, I'll be monitoring him due to interrupted preseason risks.

I am in two minds about Barlow. He was trade bait for McCarthy. He could potentially get dropped. Bennell, Neale, fresh faces could see his mid time fall. His higher scores at the end of last year were with Fyfe out.
Issues with Dahlhaus' mid time too with Libba back. As you mentioned no Crameri.

Not intending to "destroy" your PODs (as they could turn out to be great picks; especially Williams). But too much risk for mine.

I like your team.

Mine is very similar in structure (with different POD's). There are question marks against Shaw, Mcveigh, Boyd and Bartel and I wont be selecting any of them (no Simpsons either for me) ... but I do expect that one of them will prove me wrong and have a good season (just not sure which one).

Hey Darkie,

Interesting conundrum for me :)

So Version 3 from Team Picker will not fit within the salary cap of 2016 :( so I may have to go back to Version 2 (with a few changes)

Anyone else had a similar issue with their Team Picker team not coming within the 2016 salary cap?

I actually have 118k cash in bank whereas my team picker had 46k.

However I re created my team from memory, so while the premiums are exact I figure I probably have put in a different rookie somewhere.

I put mine in as saved. Went from 39k in the back to "You cannot afford this player" for my last selection :(

That's strange. I screenshotted my team and there's no difference in my team at all.

Word of caution, I wouldn't not pick Barlow based on the 'rumour' that he was trade bait (see article below)...he is definitely best 22

Ok guys VERSION 1 for 2016:

Comment away :)

DEF: Boyd, Simpson, Bartel (M), B.Smith (M)*, M.Brown (F), S.Collins (Hartley, K.Collins)
MID: Pendles, Ablett, JPK, Rockliff, Libba, B.Crouch, Lovell, Gore (Jansen, Sumner (F), Hibberd (D))
RUC: S.Martin, Lobbe* (Max King (F))
FWD: D.Martin (M), Dahlhaus (M), Barlow (M), Boomer, Wells (M)*, Petracca (M) (Kommer, McDonald-Tipungwuti (D))

Warchest: 89K

BOLD: Keepers
Underlined: Potential keepers (dependent on NAB form and role)
Italics: Potential keeper IF they kill it

Reasoning:

DEF:
Waiting to hear if McVeigh will line up 100% fit for Round 1. He could easily fit back in there. Gone with 3 solid SC performers (historically) that have generally been quite durable.
*Due to changes from Team Picker to SC2016, have not been able to run Bartel at D4 so have gone for Smith.

MIDS:
I like this line, but keep tossing and turning between JPK and Hanners. Both durable and great scorers. Can anyone convince me either way!?! haha
There is also the option to bring in Fyfe if he's fit Round 1.
I'm picking Libba as a keeper to end the year at (at worst) M8 and *Crouch will be a stepping stone/breakout (or a keeper if he become the new Danger lol)

RUC:
Martin is my locked and loaded R1 and I'm hoping to use Lobbe as a stepping stone to Goldy (hopefully there is a bit of a price drop there). *Lobbe will be watched for NAB form.

FWD:
Don't you just love a forward line with so many DPPs :p Dusty, Dahlhaus and Barlow are my big 3 with Boomer coming in at D4. All are generally quite durable (Barlow potentially the exception but I see value here). *Wells is the pick I'm going to cop some flack over - his selection is based on how I see him through the NAB Cup. Any sign of struggle and he becomes a rookie. Chosen as a VERY fallen premium.

So if ALL goes REALLY well I could potentially have a maximum of 16 keepers. But being completely glass half empty, I'm going to say 13-14 (based on either Crouch or Smith being that 14th keeper, Wells is the big ? of the 3)

Go to work guys. What would you all change?
Good luck in 2016!

100% best 22 one of about 5 players who have been in every side Ive drafted to date. Had a horror year and still averaged 93. Plenty of upside, I think I remember reading somewhere that Lyon even pulled him aside and apologised for playing him out of position.
