Firstly, of all, I do NOT have Cotchin in my team
Secondly, Cotchin's score (at first instance) obviously raised my eyebrows since I used to watch play by play on the AFL website and usually have a good idea of what the scores are by watching the play-by-play action.
However, I remember vaguely watching something on TV a few years ago on how Champion Data assess their scores, noting that Champion Data make money more from giving statistical analysis to Clubs and make less money on SuperCoach/AFL Dream Team (iirc).
I vaguley recall that Champion Data have 3-4 people watching the game. One guy calls the play and says Watson, Cotchin, Ablett, effective kick, in-effective kick, tackle to Swallow, clanger to Stanton (lol nice example). The another person double checks the play and a third person actually puts the stats down. Then the computer system does everything. The person who makes the call does not know how many points get allocated to the play, he just says effective, ineffective, clanger etc.
Naturally, it's painful seeing Cotchin's score, but I'll try to be the voice of reason as I remember watching that footage. Let me find it.
It will take me a while to find it, but I remember this article:
