Did a subject as part of my degree last year on drug use and behaviour. Most fascinating subject I've done at uni so far as we all know someone or have been personally affected by the misuse of drugs and alcohol.
Reported meth use is not as high as the media seem to portray (around 2% of the population), in fact meth use has been steadily falling over the years after having peaked in the 2000's. There are three main types of meth being used, colloquially known as ice, speed and base. Ice has the worst effects of the trio, and the issue is that while speed and base use have decreased, more and more people of that 2% figure are turning to ice. It seems to have claimed a big scalp here in Bomber, which is very sad for me as a lover of footy. He possesses a terrific footballing mind and was a great servant of the game while involved.
People often form an unhealthy relationship with drugs and alcohol when there are unsatisfactory elements in their life - a way to cope with goings on, a temporary escape, a numbing agent, a way to feel good for a while. I hope he and the nameless others out there get the help and support they need to overcome their challenges. Hopefully not just by throwing the book at the them and treating the outward symptoms, but by addressing the underlying 'root' issues.
