Freo pulled out of the race for Hogan.

Bickley on 5AA suggesting should Gold Coast should grab the 3 SA boys (Lukosious , Rankine & Rozee) and offer them 5 year deals.

They are burning effigies of their premiership captain in the street as I type this :)

Jesus Bucks , fancy anyone drafting SA kids other than the local teams.

Expecting both the clubs to talk to Gold Coast , St Kilda & Brisbane re picks swaps.

I am obviously missing something re Wingard & Port Adelaide.

They have suggested Hombsch leaves and let Pittard go because of a lack of opportunity , so why Burton ?

Clurey , Howard , Jonas
Bonner , Broadbent , Byrne-Jones , Hartlett , Houston , Lienert , McKenzie , Motlop.

Wingard is Port's 2nd best player after Gray so stuffed if I can work this out.

More on Hogan. Sounds like that’s bad news for lions supporters who would’ve been hoping to land Neale.

FREMANTLE has withdrawn from its prolonged pursuit of star Melbourne forward Jesse Hogan.

The Dockers said they weren't prepared to meet the Demons' asking price of two first-round picks.

Fremantle head of football Peter Bell has informed Melbourne the Hogan deal won't proceed.

"We have been undertaking a due diligence process as part of a possible trade to secure Jesse Hogan," Bell said.

"As part of that process, we have had discussions with Jesse, the player's management and Melbourne.

"While discussions were proceeding it became clear that what Melbourne would be seeking for a trade would not be possible for our club to meet.

"As such, we have informed Melbourne and Jesse's management that we will not be continuing further with the due diligence process."
The Dockers had met with the Demons spearhead on multiple occasions and last week toured him through the club's Cockburn facilities.

While Hogan had indicated his desire to play for the Dockers in 2019, Fremantle's withdrawal ensures he will return to the Demons to play out his contract unless another suitor emerges.

Fremantle's attempt to lure Hogan home had been a work in progress over a number of seasons, but this year marked the first time Melbourne had been prepared to part ways with the 23-year-old.
On Friday morning, the Demons reiterated their stance that unless Hogan moved on, they wouldn't be in a position to land Gold Coast captain Steven May.

After landing Jake Lever from Adelaide last year in a deal that included this year's first-round pick, Melbourne doesn't enter the draft until pick No.36.

With Fremantle ending its approach for Hogan, it will now turn its focus into retaining contracted dual best and fairest Lachie Neale, despite his wish to move to Brisbane.
Speaking on the opening day of NAB AFL Trade Period on Monday, Bell said it was his priority to keep Neale, less than a week into taking the reins of the football department.

"Lachie Neale is a two time best and fairest winner at our footy club. We would love to keep him," Bell said.

"Being a new footy manager, or general manager of football, on day three, it would be a feather in my cap if Lachie stayed at the footy club, so that’s what we're working towards."

Fremantle's current draft hand includes picks 11, 23, 30 and 49 which it will use in talks with Greater Western Sydney for contracted Giant Rory Lobb.

This is not having a go at u or Burton, but what purpose do you think he serves in the backline?
In 2017 he filled the Hodge/quarterback role. He had a bit of a down year in 2018 and Sicily has probably taken over the quarterback role. That said, Burton has class, is a high draft pick (Hawks haven't had a lot of those lately), has shown he is flexible position wise, is only 21 and loves the club.
It's the potential I see that he could replace Burg rather than the 2018 season. Also Hawks probably lose high draft pick in a good draft.

All that said, straight sets in this year's finals was in large part due to a lack of firepower in the fwd line which Wingard should help bring.

Ok so you mentioned the quartet back role. What are some attributes of his that makes him good in this position.

From my perspective
He doesn’t have the intercept marking skills of Howe, Mcgovern, Lever
He hasn’t got that long penetrating 60m kick like Hurn, Short
He’s safe but his foot skills don’t stand out like Witherdwn and Whitfield either
He has ok pace for his major knee injuries seem to prevent him from reaching full pace. So he’s not exactly a run and carry player like johanissen, crisp.

So that raises the question: what is one weapon of Burton that he can base his game around?

A lot of these well rounded high end draftees who dominated junior leagues like Aish, Taylor, Burton burst into the scene but sort of just stagnate, and it’s because their set of attributes don’t exactly translate into AFL standard. Being an all rounder and without excelling in one area, you could easily go from being a jack of all trade in junior league to being a versatile but mediocre player at the highest level.

Obviously there are exceptions but I just haven’t seen enough from burton to suggest that he will eventually become a game winner.

Prochard, he has played two seasons, the first of which he was second in the rising star. You are talking like he should be dominating a competition of 700 odd players already. Some do, but they are extremely rare. Gotta give him time to build into his skills etc.

Fast track to mediocrity, must be thinking they will get some stars in the draft.

I tend to agree, which might contradict what I said earlier about Burton but it is still very early in his career to be making any out-and-out conclusions about how he’ll end up.

There have been a bunch of players traded early in their career to become superstars of the game (JPK and JJK come to mind) but at the time, they were probably surplus to their team’s needs. Obviously the hawks would like to keep Burton, who I believe signed a 3 year contract this year or last but they had to make a decision to give something to get something.

For Hawthorn’s sake, I hope Burton doesn’t become a JPK if he does end up moving on!

2 games so far and coming off a ACL and other injuries

Jono O'Rourke was a # 2 where is he now ?
I know there's no guarantee he'll be a good player and the injuries might continue to curse his career. My comment was more to do with the fact he hasn't had a chance to show what he is capable of and the Blues haven't given up much to be taking a chance on a no.5 draft pick. I think it's a very good gamble. Similar to Ahern at North who showed some glimpses this year of being a smart buy.

I'm liking Peter Bell so far. It would be great to have Hogan but no need to sell the whole club to get him.

suspect this will still get done

Brisbane # 5 to Freo for Neale
Freo # 5 to Melbourne for Hogan
Melbourne # 5 to Gold Coast for May

Gold Coast # 5 on a player who leaves after 2 seasons.

far out

you have been chasing Hogan for 3 years , just get the deal done

been crying out for a key forward since Pav left.

Bell maybe very good but he is not scoring goals.

or perhaps Apeness , McCarthy & Taberner all turn into superstars during the pre-season

get the deal done Freo

not sure how we get Beams , Kelly & Roughead when we currently have 18 , 51 , 56 , 57 , 75 & 93.

Not sure what the Swans will give up for Langdon.

Is their a minimum number of picks a club must use in the Draft ? because we are apparently after Quayner & Kelly (the younger)

Hope our list manager is a guru.

Relax, the point is Port managers need to make a decision about Burton now, and I personally wouldn’t go anywhere near him. Fyi if someone offered me a top 3 pick for Stephensen I'd take it. The whole rising star thing is meaningless, even after Stephensen won it I still have doubts regarding his calibre as a player and how well he will transition into the midfield.

Roughead will go for either pick 75 or pick 93, or a combination of both. Picks in the 50s or earlier will not be touched.

Kelly Quaynor we can go into deficit for points so they aren’t a problem either.

Worst case scenario we give up pick 18 and Thomas for Beams.

Our targets can be easily achieved. Freo is in a challenging spot having to balance between so many options.

If his body holds up this will be a good deal for Carlton (and a fair one for the Giants)

CARLTON has secured a deal for Greater Western Sydney midfielder Will Setterfield.
The Blues sent their future second-round pick as well as pick No.43 in this year's NAB AFL Draft to GWS, in exchange for the 190cm on-baller and pick No.71.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-10-12/blues-giants-settle-on-deal-for-young-mid-will-setterfield
A 20 year old who was pick 5. Massive Bargain for the blues.

I am happy enough as we wanted to take him in his draft year but points system up top does not value top 5 picks high enough, so GWS come over the top and took him from us with much later picks. Finally got him back. On the cheap side too so very happy. Our youthful midfield has some real talent to work with in next 5 years. Wish we could get a 25 to 27 year old gun mid to go with it but easier said than done.
