Just did some digging on this. From what I can tell:

- He started playing back in round 20 last year. Has since scored 100, 120, 75 and 112, followed by 104, 120, 96, 93 and 100. That's 102 to end last year and 103 this year.

- His lowest score since that time was in a game when he only had one R50, versus a minimum of 4 in the others. So he may not have actually played defence in that game.

- Role uncertainty seems to be a bit of an issue, given pre season comments and that he's coached by Beveridge. See below.

- He had an interrupted preseason with a knee surgery late last year, but he said in Jan that it's "sweet - all fine".
Great colour, thanks Darkie!

I am a tad concerned about the role - but I also feel like it's a situation where I've identified him as one I want, I don't want to umm and ahh over it. As long as he plays defence, where he seems to be racking it up, the scores should follow. I'll take on Beveridge given Daniel's price.

To Andrews owners...

Are you guys going to trade if he is looking like missing 3 weeks ?
TBH I think I would have been prone to move him on anyway, he's not taking kickouts and not getting the intercept marks he was during his breakout period. Three weeks (if it comes to that) basically makes it certain.

He was on track for another 90+ and never really took kick-in’s last year either.

Besides that 40 he has been good but fair enough if you think he has under delivered and therefore has to be a trade.

It’s also Reilly O’Brien at R2 on field over Baker at F6 though that has to be taken into consideration in the trade too.
Obrien at 85 and Baker at 65 for 5 weeks is still only 100 points for a trade. In my opinion that is not worth it.

With the kick in thing the new rules obviously make it a great avenue to cheap points. I didn't really understand the effect of the new rules but the upshot for me is that Andrews wasn't that great of an initial selection (as I did). Compare him to Daniel Rich who takes a lot of the kick-ins at the Lions and you can see the effect it has on a players upside. Daniel Rich before 2019 and the one this season are almost like two different players in terms of SC.

O’Brien is guaranteed those 5 weeks though x 85 = 425

Baker could be out the week after next and seems more likely than not that he will be gone within 5 weeks anyway.

Then when he is out I’m scrambling to go down to another forward rookie (of which there doesn’t seem to be any on the horizon) or making an up/down trade to get him up to a premo along with still having Drew on the field too (in the Goldy option I’d have Moore F6).

When Jack Riewoldt is back I doubt they play 5 smalls and Baker would be out before Bolton or Castagna imo but you’d know better than I would.

I agree that Baker job security isn't high. He's not in my B22. But you will play someone else on the field in those weeks. You don't have to select Baker.

Scenario - Your F6 does a Petrecelle and scores a ton and Obrien scores 70. Sauce's knee recovery goes really well and he is back in 4 weeks. O'brien goes straight out.

It's not inconceivable that if you trade Goldy to Daniel you actually LOSE points on that for the season. Just my thoughts.

The alternatives are Balta and Bines so I can’t play anyone if Baker is dropped if I do the Baker trade. It is definitely another trade if he is dropped. if I don’t get Bines back to R3 via the Goldy trade and O’Brien on field that’s the forward bench currently.

I agree in part to your summation that D Rich is benefitting from the new kick in rule. However, some of the improvement in his SC scoring thus far compared to last season are indicated by the following factors as well:

+5 disposals
+3.4 marks
+5 TOG%
+5 DIS%

I take your point that he's improved in general play as well, however how much of that is a result of his role? For example disposal efficiency could be on the uptick because from a kick in he just has acres of space to hit a target after playing on. He's also probably the "loose" player in defense after he kicks it in so gets cheap disposals that way. I don't know if that's the case for certain but I would not be surprised if his general numbers are on the improve just because he takes kick ins.

There's going to be some really cheap fallen premiums in the forward line over the coming weeks:

Menegola, Hoff, Chadwick, Buddy, Darling, Robbie Gray, Kelly.

Some will turn it around, some won't, good luck picking the right ones.

It’s annoying, I don’t think many would have brought him in this year but I think he would have hit good scores under the radar all year. I’ll probably turn him into a Lloyd, Sicily type.

Collins -> Baker
Darling -> T.Kelly

Might have to be the trades this week.

Don’t think I can afford Clark to Baker or Goldy to Daniels if I want to get Kelly via Darling.

The alternative is

Goldy -> Kelly
Darling -> Worpel

Then leaves Moore F6 and Scrimshaw, Hore, Duursma D4-D6 with Clark and Collins as cover.

Another thing I'll add is its unusual for a guy in his age 29 season to have this elevation in his numbers. He could have had a change of role in the team apart from the kick ins; he could have had a good off-season, or he could just be a beneficiary of the Lions being a bit better overall this year. I think, however, on balance, the kick in thing probably is at least somewhat of a contributor to his better numbers.

I guess if we get to the end of the season and see 16 of 18 players who take majority kick ins are in the top 25 defenders overall or whatever that will probably answer the question.
