Rowsus, if you have time I'd love for you to cast your eye over my team and offer any advice. I have 7 (precious!) trades left and $263k in the bank. Plan this week is Birchall > Shaw. Not sure how I should structure my future trades. Would love to go Vlastuin to Houli this week (or Hibberd next week) but worried about getting low on trades.

WOW! I'm jealous! You have a better team, more cash, and more trades than me! :(
I like the Birchall > Heater trade, leaving you $125,800 and 6 trades. That would still leave your biggest problem as your D5-D8, and possibly Maric. I think you need to fix your Def a bit more, as you have half decent coverage for Maric. I have Maric too, and I'm hoping he can do late this season, what he did late last season. I can see some Coaches that have him wanting to swap him to Goldy though.
Your trades going forward really depend on your goals for the season. If it is to get as high a ranking as possible, then keep trading!
Thurlow and Webster would appear to be pretty shakey, as far as D7 and D8 go, thinking cover-wise here. Given how hard it is to find the right Def's this season, maybe Shaw is a must have, for Coaches in your position. If we assume Vlastuin will be a late out, then obviously Vlastuin to Houli this week, is better than Vlastuin to Hibberd next week! If Houli can score a 90, then Hibberd has to outscore Houli by 10 every week to be a better option.
I think you should go Birchall, Vlastuin --> Shaw, Houli.
This leaves you $40k and change, 5 trades and a backline still just a little exposed. D6 Goodes, D7/8 Thurlow Webster.
From there, I'd be looking at making a link for Staker to be cover both Fwd and Def, by getting Xavier Richard for Thurlow or Webster. Not something that has to be done immediately, but kept in mind. Maybe if Maric continues to look shakey in a week or three, you down grade KMart or Nicholls, and get Goldy and another cheap DPP link for cover if possible.
I think your priorites should be, get your Def line fixed up, get good coverage with DPP links where possible, and you should still have 2 or 3 trades left for insurance. With just a little bit of cash, and two or three trades left, if you have no LTI's you can look at upgrading Goodes or Rockliff late in the season.
Good luck :)

Thanks heaps for such comprehensive advice!

Maric is really doing my head in but mostly because I traded him in last week for Jacobs. Quite a rash move that was mostly driven by rage/despair!! I really need to learn to have patience in this game.

Yes, I agree re my defence. It's very shakey so I think I do need to bolster the bench. Thurlow and Webster certainly don't offer much security. My concern though is burning trades as last year I ran out with about 6 weeks to go.

My main aim is to win my cash PL and if I can finish in the top 2000 overall then that's a bonus.

Thanks again mate.

Love the thread. Thanks Rowsus for all your time and help.

One thing that has always perplexed me that I was hoping you could help me with is if a Smurf is choking what color does he turn?

I've choked a few Smurfs in my time ;) they usually turn a purplish color. If you leave a dead one out in the sun too long, they tend to go teal after a few days, but that slowly turns into pine geeen, and finally after about a month, pistachio! :)

Happy to help!
Given your long term goal is your PL, then you need to try and reach the finals with around 4 trades. I'm assuming given your ranking you're high up on the ladder. If you look like being top 4, I'd cop a donut or two just to make sure I have those trades for the finals. Also, I'd look at McKenzie instead of Hibberd and Houli. He has an excellent SC finals draw! :)

I call Bull****! No way you would be mean enough to leave a dead smurf out for a month without burying it :p

Gold PC, pure gold! I literally laughed out loud.
I wonder if that rock I'm sitting on is located near the rock The Little Mermaid sits on in the harbour?
Quite possibly I may have considered her your statistical muse :p

Has a team ever only kicked one goal in a half by a player with a lower BMI than Bootsma? I'm thinking no.

He got covered by autumn leaves, and I forgot about him! :p
I'm with Mr Arrogance. The smell would have been too much to have a dead smurf just lying around without something needing to be done abt it....unless of course the smurf was hated by all in the community and they turned a blind eye to your shenanigans :)

It was Dabbler Smurf. I just got so sick of his sad sack, pessimistic attitude. I think he lay there so long, because no one missed him!

If we had Supercoach scores back when we were kids what would Robbie Flower average and would he be a premium?.. lets go for 1981 as example year.

My retrospect SC Dreamteam for that era...

DEF: Keith Greig, Bruce Doull, Ross Glendinning,Trevor Barker, Jimmy Jess, Wayne Harmes, (Mark Browning, Kenny Hunter)

MID: Dale Weightman, Doug Hawkins, Robbie Flower, Tim Watson, Gary Wilson, Michael Turner, Rod Ashman, Bernie Quinlan, (Jimmy Buckley, Merv Neagle)

RUC: Gary Dempsey, Simon Madden, (Peter Moore, David Cloke)

FWD: Peter Daicos, Malcolm Blight, Leigh Matthews, Mick Conlan, Gerard Healy, Wayne Johnston, (Kelvin Templeton, Tony Morwood)

Forgive me if it is too much cookie cutter. :)

Would it get me in the top 1,000 for the year ?

I'm afraid you missed the top 1000, Oz.
While it's a fantastic looking team, you are missing too many key players, and have too many passengers, even though it is an all star line up!
Just picking a few out:
Keith Greig only managed 3 games for the season, but did have 49 possessions in those 3 games.
Malcolm Blight kicked 70 goals in his 15 games, so we will give him a passing grade.
Your Carlton boys let you down heavily. Ashman was a superstar, but Harmes only managed 15 games, Buckley only managed 13 games with 11.2 possessions per game, and Johnson only managed 12 games.
Bernie Quinlan was a great player for you. He was totally amazed to be listed in the Midfield, after playing FF/CHF the year before, and kicking 48 goals. He was so happy to be listed as a Mid, he kicked 73 goals that season for you!
Michael Turner also only managed 13 games, and his disposal average of 14.2 was low for a good wingman.
You had really high hopes that Matthews was going to be huge for you! He kicked 11 goals in round 1, but only finished the season with 16 games and 48 goals. Servicable, but didn't deliver what round 1 promised!
Your David Cloke experiment flopped badly. 12 games, 18 goals and only 70 hitouts! Ouch!
Mark Browning was good in the 12 games he managed.
Your biggest let down Kelvin Templeton! Brownlow medalist the year before, kicking 75 goals, he managed a paltry 6 games and 8 goals for you!
If it wasn't bad enough that those 9 players only played 101 games for you, you fell down badly by not finding space in your team for:
Peter Featherby, Tony Shaw, Terry Wallace, Geoff Raines, Tony Buhagiar and Bruce Nankervis who were the 6 leading possession getters for the season. In fact, of the 20 leading possession gatherers for the season, you only found 3! (Ashman, Neagle and Barker).
You probably should have found room for Barry Round, as well. His hitouts were down, but he lead the league in marks and handballs for the season!
Michael Roach might have found a spot in the Forward line with his season high 86 goals, but I can understand why you left 2nd place getter Mark "Jacko" Jackson out!
Mark Lee needed to replace Cloke, he was clearly the 2nd best tap Ruckman to Dempsey.

All in all, a team of football superstars, that struggled into the top 50,000 in SC. Too many injuries, and even the odd donut here and there, along with missing most of the high possession men cost you big time. Sorry. :)

Got a question for you & would appreciate your advice on my thoughts.
Have $20k & 12 trades left. This week I want to pick up houli & clisby for birch & vlastuin. Leaves me with $266k. Next week I want to finalise my team by trading Rowe (move staker fwd) then pick up Hanley/enright/duff or whoever is best available. If you go over my team would u do the same?
I want houli as he still looks to be a POD looking at this weeks most traded in players.

Firstly on NicNat. His price next week will be $561,900 +/-$300 and his B/E around 157.
If he can manage 110 the week after that, we're looking at around $541,200 and B/E 149.
A further 110 the week after that, and he levels out to $524,000 and B/E 102.
But as you mentioned, he's capable of landing a monster next week, and virtually "erasing" that 73 from his pricing pattern.

Secondly, looking at your team, I think your biggest area of concern is still your Def line. You are currently running Goodes D6 and Thurlow D7. That's very shakey, and little to no back up. Your other 3 lines need 2 or 3 to go down for you to get a donut, your Def line is hanging by the Thurlow JS single cotton thread. It's like the sword of Damacles, it's not if that thread will break, but when!
Let's look at it this way, if Thurlow disappears, you have no cover at all. It really seems like a case of when, not if, for Thurlow not getting a regular game. The problem with the approach of "But if I get Pendles and or NicNat, I still have a trade for coverage" is that coverage has no coverage. Sounds long and convoluted. Look at the scenario, that in the next week or two Thurlow stops getting a game (fair chance), and one of your 6 Defs gets an LTI. You use a trade to replace him, but you still have no cover! You have to hope your Def line coasts through 8 weeks with no Restings, suspensions or injuries! It's not a wildly inconceivable prospect.
Nine or Ten rounds is a long way to coast with 2 trades, and a line with little or no cover. It's a huge difference to what Chewy and Jay did, coasting the last 4 or 5 weeks with 1 or no trades, as they had good cover, or in Chewy's case, amazing cover in that last week!
Using SC Gold as a guide, let's compare your scenarios. I know SC gold is notoriously inaccurate, but at least it's a non-biased scale to measure things on.
Dal Santo > Pendlebury for the last 9 weeks - Dal 891, Pendlebury 1141, profit 250 points
Jacobs > NicNat for the last 9 weeks - Jacobs 692, NicNat 1100, profit 408 points
Long term injury to one of your 6 Defs - yours average 99.46 - 5 weeks of pain outscore NicNats gain!
I'm not sure what the easy answer is, though. Is it LOL Richo > Xavier Richards? This gives you a link to Staker and creates a FD loop between your Def and Fwd line. Richards is actually close to getting a run, if you guage his listing as an emergency a few times as a guide.
In the scenario where you get NicNat, AND Richards, you have 1 trade left for LTI's in the last 8 weeks. It's a long way to coast, but it looks safe than coasting 9 weeks with no Def cover.
Running the risk of no cover is a dangerous game, but taking risks is usually what making gains is all about. Your NicNat upgrade out trumps your Pendlebury upgrade (on SC Gold figures), and actually looks like a winner. Just keep an eye on your Def cover. You can very quickly cause more damage with no cover, than any upgrade will ever compensate.
Good luck :)
Awesome thanks for that. I probably should've mentioned I traded Thurlow to clisby to fund a Birchall to Heppell trade this week which I think improves my backline coverage (albeit slightly) but the x Richards trade is certainly a consideration especially after being named last night! A lot rides on Jacobs performance v GC today for mine. Spuds it up and backs it up with another dodgy score and he's almost certainly gone. With two weeks price changes to NicNat trade may become a reality yay!

PS. This thread is quickly becoming one of my faves on the site :D
