Looking like Comben may be this year's Bines based on the draw - Kanga's have a lot of Sunday matches.
Leaning to locking in Gawndy without a second thought, but need to see all the other prices in other positions. Could be better to go for an extra premium elsewhere maybe?

Yeah he historically only plays about 60% game time. I don’t expect that to change, however we all know he can score just as well as the other top rucks in that 60% game time. He’s just so influential.
It’s more a question of his health and playing every game, which he’s always had trouble doing.
If we could know for sure he’d play all 22 i’d lock him in in a heartbeat, as it’s so much fun having him in your team when he’s fit and firing. But sadly I think he’s too much risk.

I will shy away from NicNat because my assessment of his PIT based scores is low. Let me explain.
I assume you do not want to trade each time NicNat is "rested." A defender or a forward has two bench players to cover an absence. A midfielder has three. Typically we look to have the better rookies as bench cover as they await harvesting. Hence they provide good cover if an elite or premium has a short term problem. And a reasonable PIT.
Now, consider who is your ruck reserve. For me last year it was "supersub" from the West Coast. He never played but he was an excellent vice captain. Sure, he was useful to switch with a F/R if necessary. But, I still have bad memories of sticking with Westhoff in the forward line as ruck cover. Never again. The points I had to forego just kept rising (except for round 1). My ruck PIT number was either zero, or negative. Man that hurt. This year I'll go with a low priced F/R whose club plays a lot on Sundays. Comben from North probably.
So set and forget for me. If Grundy or Gawn were to get injured, I can trade down to the next best performing ruck. And, you'll almost certainly have the capacity to make that trade if it is necessary.

I went into last season with Goldstein and English, who quickly became Mumford with ROB at R3. Managed to trade out Mummy at his peak, but it was only 130k profit or so thus not really worth 2 trades.
Went up 30k ranks when Gawndy had the bye and then traded into them when Goldy and ROB had theirs the week later but still paid just about full starting price so nothing gained.
So 4 trades burned and some meagre cash gain to finally get the big guys: this year I'm just starting them.

I think it was about as successful as one would hope (ROB being pretty serviceable) but without being a knockout. I finished alright last year, but I think “having” to get Grawndy in reduced the flexibility of my options around the byes. If a ROB type rookie was available in Rucks this year, I’d have no problem going without one of them.
I think if I’d have stuck with my non-Grawndy combo post-bye it might have served me well too.
TLDR: Success highly depends on the rookies, I basically spent full price on Grawndy anyway, it limited my trading options during the bye AND it have me heart issues pre-bye.

Haha - nice of you to write the abridged summary, given the length of some of my posts it would be rude not to read two paragraphs in response to my own question 
Your explanation makes sense. I'm also looking to pick relatively obvious or stress free options next year, partly because the stress of not owning them/owning others creates unnecessary stress, and partly because it often constrains flexibility.
