I'm trying very hard to avoid ALL of the Docherty/Steven/Smith/Houston/Dawson types, I've rarely been successful with those type of picks and don't see that trend bucking, for me anyways. With that says, I somehow always end up with 1 or 2 speculative picks of my own which has been anything but spectacular, so will also need to control that urge as we head towards R1.

Very out of character of me to start with a solid straight bat, but I feel that it has worked more often than not for others so it's probably time for me to adopt that approach in my 8th season.
will you have fun with the solid (straight) bat from the start?

I see you as more of manic slasher that causes mayhem and destruction every 6 games or so... and man ... do people remember those games!

Easy...

I currently have a 3-5-2-3 team structure with only 9 on-field Rookies.
I can only get 2-6-2-2 without using any of the 8 , I have used expensive rookies though

Laird , Sicily
Macrae , Fyfe , Cripps , Kelly , Whitfield , Oliver
Grundy , Gawn
Martin , Heeney

curious how you get 3-5-2-3 , are you running Grundy & Gawn ?

In my view, I think the mid-pricers approach is much more suited to the Fantasy format where there are something like 50 trades available for year. The guy who won Fantasy 2 years in a row always preached the G & R approach but still had (and bemoaned the fact that he rarely hit them) 3-4 mid-pricers. What that allowed him to do was quickly go 'one up one down' when he identified failures with the MP's and also get the better rookies once they showed their wares. He was also very well educated with analysis done on every player in the comp.

The trouble with limited trades IMO, is burning those precious trades doing adjustments to MP's when it's hard enough just keeping up with rookie in's and out's and trying to earn enough cash.

Last year was my 1st in SC and 2nd in Fantasy. Finished at about 1300 in SC (after blowing out 500 places in the last round, mainly due to running out of trades 4 rounds out) and about 5k in Fantasy. Did my head in a bit playing both formats and getting confused sometimes as to who was good in SC or Fantasy. I'm only saying these things cos I'm a noob to the game and have a shipload to learn, so I don't reckon anyone should take much notice of what I have to say.

I am looking forward though to milking a few brainiacs here and utilising the vast amount of knowledge and experience that's on this board.
do we have the starting team of the winner last year? perhaps the changes he made for bonus points

Thanks for your thoughts.
I personally reckon Heeney is fairly low risk as a starter. Floor of 90-95 avg but still has breakout potential if he gets that more significant mid time. I think he will breakout to 105+ at some stage, only a matter of when. Buddy will still play early (if not R1) and Sydney kept Papley, so both should help keep Heeney away from a heavy fwd role.

No real preference on the mids after Cripps and Oliver. There will no doubt be a few $600k+ guys who end up being huge bullets as starting picks. Will just need to figure out who those ones are vs the ones that start the year well. Hard to see any of the guys in the $600k range averaging under 105, but there always seems to be a few elites who drop for whatever reason.

Re Danger and Neale, Neale I think his price may fall at some point with a tagged score, I’m pretty unlikely to start him after a career best year. Danger, just feel a bit hesitant to start given price, age and role concerns but I’m not against the pick. Like Bont a bit more due to age and I doubt he’ll play fwd anymore with Bruce’s arrival.
This makes sense, thanks.

Heeney seems like a low downside pick to me as well, although if he's needed forward (or, erm, if Horse thinks he is) I think the 105+ looks a fair way off. So I think his downside is modest but I'm wondering if he could be an upgrade target given his bye etc.

@All is Wells made a good point in another thread (maybe X vs Y) re a potential tag for Oliver, might be worth a look given your comments on Neale.

That structure of mine is running the Grundy & Gawn Rucks.

Without revealing too much as I hate to start any 'group' think on here...:)

Laird, Sicily, XXX
Dangerfield is my M5
Dusty, Heeney, YYY
***I'm starting S Hill along with 5 Rookies @ $145K+ (Young the highest at $180K); no Rookies under $117K

I mentioned that I was avoiding all those 'popular' Value/MPs selections, but am still prone to having a couple of selections which is the hallmark of my style, that's where the XXX & YYY comes into its own (Both are circa $500K).

I think I still like Heeney but you are right, if he’s played forward, he’s not a must start. He showed some potential to score 130s when getting that midfield time last season, so I guess that’s what I’m after (preferably early but otherwise at some point)

Oliver definitely has some tag risk as well but there’s less downside at his price to a tag. If Neale has a 50 odd at $660k, he’ll come tumbling down. That’s why I’m currently a fan of Bont. I think he has less tag risk as he can just rotate forward and still score pretty well. The tag probably rotates to a Macrae/Dunkley in such scenario so Bont seems less likely to have a real stinker due to a tag.

Fully understandable.

I am just making new sides every day , I will soon have Stoinis in somewhere slipping between AFL & Big Bash ?

yes very easy to follow the group think.

I am picking Rucks first , then rookies , then premiums , then see what's left over.

Cheers

Everyone says and swears by that before the first bounce, myself included...:)
and everyone then does the complete opposite ?

it does make a lot of sense

it's why I like making teams with the higher priced rookies as well , much easier to go down to cheaper rookies if named , than trying to upgrade from $ 117 k or even cheaper and then adjusting premiums

Defs: Laird, Sicily, Doch, Roberton, Hill + rookies (Gould, McCleannan, Rivers)
Mids: Fyfe, Cripps, Bont, Oliver, Rowell + rookies (Pickett, Valente, McHenry, Sharp, Mead, North)
Rucks: Gawn, Grundy (Comben)
Forward: Whitfield, Dusty, Heeney, Smith, Steven, Cockatoo + rookies (Rankine, King)

Hard to really lock into a structure without knowing where the rookies are. I have a few premiums on each line I’m happy to chop and change. Mids especially, I think it’s only Cripps and Oliver I’m completely comfortable on. I’m fairly bullish on Heeney as a starter. Laird, Whitfield, Fyfe, Bont can all be chopped and changed. Gawn to Jacobs/Naismith is a structure I’m open to as well.

Running one less mid atm than most as I keep getting stuck with Cogs when I try to add a mid. Not too fussed about cookie cutter sides as I think it’s the trading that really sets you apart! I also love the midpricer fallen premium type :)
Well given Steven has now made it difficult to start him, I’ve flicked him to a rookie and upgraded Laird to Macrae. Structurally it probably is better to grab an extra rookie and lock in Macrae from the start.

Defs: Sicily, Doch, Roberton, Hill + rookies (Gould, Cottrell, McCleannan, Rivers)
Mids: Macrae, Fyfe, Cripps, Bont, Oliver, Rowell + rookies (Pickett, Valente, McHenry, Sharp, Mead)
Rucks: Gawn, Grundy (Comben)
Forward: Whitfield, Dusty, Heeney, Smith Flanders, Cockatoo + rookies (Rankine, King)

I think I share some characteristics in common with THCLT when it comes to coaching a SC side (judging by what he has said about starting team selection)

Every year the thing that excites me the most is trying to find that ''special structure'' others won't have found and those gem picks, whether they be underpriced/injured premos or breakout contenders or even just the ''other guy'' option for a popular premo vs a non popular premo at the same price.

Even though I know it has never led to better results, compared to the year I wasn't really that interested in playing SC and put a cookie cutter team together a few weeks before lockout and had my best ever finishing result.

The funny thing is, obviously, I got far more sustained enjoyment from managing a cookie cutter team that was doing well than I do during the excitement period of trying to create that ''winning team'' with a genius pick or two or three ;)

The long winded point of this all is...People like us need to push that little over-excited coach down into a deep dark corner of our brain during the preseason and let that old, boring, logical coach take the reigns until round 1 is finished, then we will see that the old, boring coach does indeed know how to have a good time, albeit a carefully measured but longer sustaining one.

I might facepalm after I have had some sleep and re-read this back in a day or two :ROFLMAO:

With 2-3 of Houston , Dawson , Docherty , Doedee , Roberton , Lynch , Smith , Steven though ?
Houston, Dawson, Docherty
5 mids
Gawndy
TJL Smith Steven

That makes 6... might even be cash for Roberton+Doedee!

Edit. Whoops I think he has actually avoided them all by going something like
Hurn, Laird, Sicily
5 mids
Gawndy
Whitfield, Martin, Heeney

This team is much, much safer!

PS With 15 down to 13 non rookies these two teams kinda bookends the risk spectrum of most teams being posted...

Playing around with a less “mid priced” team, quite like it:

Laird, Sicily, Doch, Hill - 2 on field “rookies”
Macrae, Neale, Fyfe, Danger, Cripps - 3 OFR
Grundy, Gawn
Whitfield, Walters, Dusty - 3 OFR
Nice but I don't feel a $125K average for your remaining 16 Rookies is going to be quite enough to cut it for this season.

I wonder if the 8 favoured midpricers can get you 6 in the mids + Rowell & Pickett while still having Grundy & Gawn ?

6 onfield rookies to start including Hill + Cockatoo & Rankine
