Interesting - why did he miss games in 2018 & 2019?

Interesting - why did he miss games in 2018 & 2019?

Tom McDonald is ruled out for up to two months with a foot injury.
McDonald developed some soreness in his toe following the club's first JLT Communirty Series game against North Melbourne and hadn't responded to treatment as quickly as was hoped.

Monday, 8 July 2019
Tom McDonald won't play again in 2019 after scans revealed a torn meniscus suffered during the Demon's narrow victory over Carlton at the MCG.
"The good news is I haven't done an ACL or anything too severe, but I've got a little meniscus tear. I'll see a surgeon, but it probably will require some surgery," McDonald said.
"It might be tough to be back playing this year, but it could be a lot worse."

Tom McDonald as a permanent forward only really worked for him and Melbourne in 2018, when Jesse Hogan had his impact season as a roaming, marking, goal scoring CHF ahead of him up the ground. A forward line built around the two of them in-form carried Melbourne to a prelim.

Before that, he had a 'good' season in 2016 as a key defender and then was ok in 2017 as Melbourne started to experiment with him as a swingman.

Are Melbourne going to be top 4 with old McDonald as the primary (only?) realistic marking option? I don't fancy it :cautious:.

true

not sure how many times collarbones can re-break either ? , if I was the opposition I would be trying to find out though

I thought the appendix was during the finals , think Footywire only uses games tally during the H & A season.
Oh yeah maybe it was, I might of got him and Josh Kelly's injury times mixed up. That was a joy last season. Every week a new GWS player I owned would be out.

……….Justin Westhoff is likely to be thrown down back after training predominantly with the defenders over the pre-season.........
https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/af...y/news-story/7805198d71cd5c5c3c6f1a4c951ce19f

I don't care where Westhoff plays this year, after the frustrations he caused me last year, he's not in my team!!! :)
Bought him for insurance in the last Rd or two last year with my last trade due to the doubts about Gawn. Scored in the 130’s in the last Rd, made my PL g/f interesting at least.

Well done!
Besides Rd1 when I had him, he scored very low, when I traded him out he scored high. I don't want to go through that again!
He may score ok if played in only one position, defence, but the uncertainty would not make him SC relevant this year. So no temptation for me :)

Blake Acres (Fremantle, $384.4k)
2019 average: 70.8 (19 matches)
Ownership: 1 per cent
One for the risk-takers. Like Greenwood, Acres was played out of position at his former club, spending 55 per cent of time as a forward in 2019. His scoring suffered as a result, slumping to his lowest season average since 2015. Acres began the 2018 season as a midfielder, averaging 106 points across the first five rounds. The 24-year-old is set to take up a midfield role at the Dockers and is set to fill the vacant wing spot left by runner Brad Hill.
“(Justin Longmuir) was pretty keen on the wing role for me and I was pretty happy with that,” Acres said in October after crossing to the club. Another to keep a close eye on the pre-season at that price.

EDIT: just did a quick calc, if he averaged 106 for the first 5 rounds, his next 14 games he went at 58
Yeah, he's a risk taker, but I'm tempted!

https://www.fremantlefc.com.au/news/305857/acres-of-opportunity-at-freo

Acres said he felt he had an inconsistent 2019 season, but a conversation with new Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir gave him confidence he could improve quickly at his new club.
“Longy’ was pretty keen on the wing role for me and I was pretty happy with that,” Acres said.
“I’m a player that moved around a bit at the Saints and had a variety of roles.
“The opportunity ‘Longy’s’ presented is more of a settled role and more just wing and maybe a little bit inside. I’m excited about that opportunity.
“(At St Kilda) I was changing my role each week but that was the role I had, to be that guy who could move around a bit.
“I probably played out of position a little bit but I was happy just to play that role and I would do the same thing again for Freo if that was needed.”

Thanks for that.

Keep seeing Whitfield , Martin, Heeney in 90% of the sides (obviously for a reason) , was just looking at a few different names.

Just looking at Footywire he has only gone 90+ in 3 out of 11 seasons though that might be a worry.

Appears most favour Whitfield , Matin & Heeney as Top 3 , after Son Son 5-10 could be anyone's guess.
I like the thinking.

Agree that his record is a bit of a concern, he’s basically gone 84-95 since he broke out, so it’s hard to argue he’s cheap, especially if he was only high 90s in his “new” role.

Durable and DPP though, maybe you could do worse?

Haha, I had to scroll back a few pages to see who was being talked about. Ziebell.

For those, like me, for whom Heeney’s attractiveness as a starting pick is closely tied to Buddy’s fitness, I was wondering ...

... should we be considering starting Buddy?

Priced at 73, with a record that’s at least as good as Heeney’s.

Buddy is missing 10 weeks just in the preseason, hmmm, how many weeks will he miss when the season starts? I think I will be saving a trade by not picking Buddy.
Also, not a big fan of Heeney. If he wasn't so talented, I would not even be considering him. Maybe that's the problem with Heeney, because he is so talented and able to play multi positions, he's the ideal player to be moved into positions where most needed. He has even played in defence, and played well there too.

Just having a look at a few different things.

Depending on how the rookies look in defence , I would like to go :-

Whitfield
Son Son/Martin/Heeney
TJL
Smith

Fingers crossed Rankine gets on the park so that then finding another 3 viable Forward rookies.

Always liked Ziebell , just hasn't gone to that elite level.

Ablett is still of interest.

Then you probably have another dozen or so players that "could" end up in the Top 5-15 position and probably a bolter completely out of the blue.

Will go 5 premium mids + the new FHOF and Pickett , so just need that other onfield one to put their hand up.

There are 2 spots in my fwd line at the moment for either fallen premo's or breakout players. The guys I am most interested in watching in the pre-season games at the moment is...
One interesting POD for discussion (obviously a big risk)

Brandan Partfitt - he seems a logical guy to really up his mid time and he has shown scoring potential in the past. If Steven misses the start of the season he particularly interests me. last year he got over 20 touches just 6 times for scores of 96,98,93,104,101,98. Regular mid time could mean regular 20+ disposal games if he gets his share of the Tim Kelly minutes..

2020 reminds me of 2018, lots of speculative picks that never had a full premo season. The 3 cheap guys were Sicily, McLean and Devon. This year its quite difficult as I've decided to forgo Heeney and his quad/thumb issues.

I'm starting to like Parish, article today saying he spoke to the coach about playing more midfield, averaged 94 I think (less injury game) when playing more midfield. In his 5th year and has a good trajectory improving every year.

Keeping an eye on Ceglar, R/F and averaged 90 in his games as solo ruck (against mostly crap rucks though), so not sure if he's any good, but with BB training in def it might be worth a look. Seems like too much has to go right for this pick to work though.

My F4 is Bailey Smith, there's is nothing surer than this guy being a superstar, but its probably early, especially because hes 6-12 months younger than some of his draft crop. But with his first full AFL preseason I am hoping for a 90 odd average. Not one for breakout picks but because of the "superdraft" I may make an exception. Was pondered as the number 1 pick before his achilies. Adds a bit of burst to the midfield.

Possible that we only go with 2 talls up forward but Schache has shown enough to keep his spot. Then pick 3 of...

Baffles me that McLean didn’t seek a trade this off season, too good to be languishing on a flank. Not many blokes running around that read the ball off hands as well as he does so I can see why Bevo tries to use him there but it’s a bloody shame we haven’t got to see him in the middle where he belongs recently.

Yep, one of the most effective stoppage players around and Jordan Russell (new mid coach) has said that he's trying to get Toby in the middle as much as he can but it's a tough unit to crack into. Combine that with Dunkley stating that he'll play forward a little bit if it's for the good of the team and I am keeping a close eye on McLean.
