Hey guys, made a post today about players averages when becoming their teams captains when replying to someone about Bont on BigFooty. I thought it was a pretty good post and that you blokes might also like to see it.

I thought that players tended to drop off a bit scoring wise after becoming the captain?

Thought I'd go through the captain's from 2019 and compare there average with the year they officially became captains and the year beforehand.

Tex ('15) +3.1 / Sloane ('19) + 6.4 - had a notable 14ppg dip from 17-18 tho

Zorko ('18) -15, but then bounced back and scored +9.8 more in his second year. Still 5ppg less than when he wasn't captain.

Cripps ('19) -2.3 / Doch ('19) dead.

Pendles ('14) -2.2

Heppell ('17) -5.3

Fyfe ('17) +3.4 - broke his leg and only averaged 105.4 the year before, low for his standards.

Selwood ('12) +6.2

Swallow ('19) -0.4 / Witts ('19) +11.1

Davis ('12) +20.7 - only averaged 51.7 from 3 games the year before / Ward ('12) +17.4

Stratton ('19) - 15.5

Jones ('14) +18.1 / Viney ('17) -6.6

Ziebell ('17) -4.7

Wines ('19) -9 / Jonas ('19) -9.9

Cotchin ('13) -10.3

Geary ('17) +1.8

JPK ('17) -10.8 / Parker ('19) +2.6 / Rampe ('19) +19.4

Hurn ('15) -11.2

Wood ('18) -1.6

The notable ones that were viable premos (110+) when they became captain were;
Zorko, Cripps, Pendles, Selwood, Cotchin and JPK.

Selwood was the only one to improve his average. The other all dipped.
Zorko, Cotchin and JPK all dropping significantly.

Trying to select my Supercoach team. Scroll bar at right of list of players won't move. Anyone know what the problem is? Enough to drive a man insane.

This is fascinating stuff. I’ve typically held for two week injuries, traded for three or more (based on c. 150 points for the trade vs c. 50 points per week for the extra premium). I’ve never thought of it in the above way though.

Does anyone else already do this, or have a strong view?

Very interesting, it does have some merit. Back when we had just 20 trades I used to hold onto premium players up to 4 weeks but moved more towards your philosophy above once we had 30 trades.

I reckon it would need to be assessed on a case by case scenario. How well does the player traditionally score coming back from injury? Say you hold onto a premium for 4 weeks but their first two weeks back they score 60 & 70's. You would defintiley would want to trade them off. But if the player is likely to go staight to scoring 100's upon return then there is definitely a case to holding onto to them if you have a reasonable rookie holding the fort in the meantime.

This is a good point.

Similarly, but maybe in the other direction, one really annoying thing about in game injuries (aside from the potential lost trade and lost points through the injury game), is the cash typically lost as a result of the low score.

That only gets locked in if you actually trade, otherwise it’s like any other keeper’s price in that it is irrelevant in absolute terms while they remain in your side. One more reason why it’s likely to be case by case.

To a couple of points made by Happy Raccoon, (1) I always try to turn lemons into lemonade, and bring in a form/better value/better quality keeper when an existing keeper gets an LTI, but (2) sometimes this leads to a cash squeeze, especially if you’ve lost cash due to the low injury score ... which in turn could contribute to a stalling of upgrade momentum, which arguably is so key.

There’s a bit to think about here.
