Hey guys, made a post today about players averages when becoming their teams captains when replying to someone about Bont on BigFooty. I thought it was a pretty good post and that you blokes might also like to see it.
I thought that players tended to drop off a bit scoring wise after becoming the captain?
Thought I'd go through the captain's from 2019 and compare there average with the year they officially became captains and the year beforehand.
Tex ('15) +3.1 / Sloane ('19) + 6.4 - had a notable 14ppg dip from 17-18 tho
Zorko ('18) -15, but then bounced back and scored +9.8 more in his second year. Still 5ppg less than when he wasn't captain.
Cripps ('19) -2.3 / Doch ('19) dead.
Pendles ('14) -2.2
Heppell ('17) -5.3
Fyfe ('17) +3.4 - broke his leg and only averaged 105.4 the year before, low for his standards.
Selwood ('12) +6.2
Swallow ('19) -0.4 / Witts ('19) +11.1
Davis ('12) +20.7 - only averaged 51.7 from 3 games the year before / Ward ('12) +17.4
Stratton ('19) - 15.5
Jones ('14) +18.1 / Viney ('17) -6.6
Ziebell ('17) -4.7
Wines ('19) -9 / Jonas ('19) -9.9
Cotchin ('13) -10.3
Geary ('17) +1.8
JPK ('17) -10.8 / Parker ('19) +2.6 / Rampe ('19) +19.4
Hurn ('15) -11.2
Wood ('18) -1.6
The notable ones that were viable premos (110+) when they became captain were;
Zorko, Cripps, Pendles, Selwood, Cotchin and JPK.
Selwood was the only one to improve his average. The other all dipped.
Zorko, Cotchin and JPK all dropping significantly.
